Some general notes on how to take measurements:

1. You can see the exact values on the graphs by positioning your mouse cursor over the part of the line you want to measure. For example:

By measuring the same relative spot on both lines, you can subtract them and determine the difference. 2. For these labs it is generally better to measure the lines at the end of the graphs, not at the beginning or somewhere in the middle. 3. Be sure to include the unit types that are mentioned such as packets per second or bytes per second. If no unit type is mentioned, as with the variation measurement in the graphic above, a unit type is not required in the answer.

Which graphs you decide to use is up to you. Your two page summary report must answer the following: 1. For the network under analysis in this lab, what effect did implementing silent suppression have on the data traffic? Why? 2. For the network under analysis in this lab, what effect did implementing silent suppression have on the VoIP traffic? Why? 3. What would be a possible disadvantage to implementing silent suppression on a VoIP network?

Introduction This report examines the simulation of voice and data traffic on a company intranet using silent suppression. Specialized software can be used to help conserve bandwidth by detecting the times when the users are not talking and cutting off the packet transmission for these times of silence. This technique is known as silent suppression. By stopping the generation and sending of silent packets, bandwidth is conserved because these silent packets send no useful information. This allows bandwidth that would have been used to send silent packets to be used by other applications. In a wide area network (WAN) that has many voice channels operating simultaneously this can add up to quite a bit of bandwidth savings. The only potential downside is that it is possible users may occasionally notice their voices getting clipped when beginning to speak if the software cannot detect their initial speech fast enough.

Methods A simulated network was setup in OpNET IT Guru version 15. The network consisted of a wide area network (WAN) that connected facilities in two cities, one on the East coast of the United States and another on the West coast. Each location has a switch that connects to 25 voice nodes, and another switch that are connected to 25 data nodes. The switches in each location were connected to a router, and the router was connected to the WAN. Two separate scenarios were modeled, one that implemented silent suppression for VoIP traffic and one that did not. All other variables pertaining to the campus network remained constant in order to determine how each codec affected the following statistics: DB Query Response Time (seconds), Email Download Response Time (seconds), HTTP Page Response Time (seconds), Voice Traffic Sent (bytes/second), Voice Traffic Received (bytes/second), Voice Packet End-to-End Delay (milliseconds), and Voice Packet Delay Variation.

The results of the simulations can be seen in Table 1, and in Images 1 through 7 in the Appendix. Table 1 Simulation results Measured Metric DB Response Time (seconds) Email Download Response Time (seconds) HTTP Page Response Time (seconds) Voice Traffic Sent (bytes/second) Voice Traffic Received (bytes/second) Voice Packet End-to-End Delay (ms) Voice Packet Delay Variation Note: Authors Table Conclusions Silent suppression had a significant effect on the data transmitted on the network, which in turn affected the performance of other network applications. Silent suppression reduced the amount of VoIP traffic on the WAN by approximately over 10,000 bytes per second. As a result, additional capacity was available and database (Table 1, Image 1), email (Table 1, Image 2), and HTTP page (Table 1, Image 3) response times were significantly faster. Silent suppression also reduced the packet delay variation because fewer packets were sent (Table 1, Image7). This reduced the load on intermediary devices, such as the routers, and enabled them transmit the VoIP packets more efficiently. Although difference was very small, even tiny changes in this 1.3794 18,329 18,277 0.1975 0.0532 0.8689 7,624 7,632 0.1907 0.0508 No Silent Suppression 1.007 1.4044 Silent Suppression 0.7857 1.0156

metric can greatly affect voice quality by reducing jitter. In addition, voice packet end-to-end delay was improved (Table 1, Image 6), again because fewer packets were sent that needed to be queued on intermediary network devices. Overall I highly recommend the implementation of silent suppression on our company network.
