Lt. Col. Retired, Jack L. Pipkin passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Nov. 23, 2005, in Vacaville. Col Pipkin was born in Camden, S.C., on July 5, 1917, to Dr. W.S. Pipkin and Mabel Lollis Pipkin. Reared and educated in Columbia, S.C., Jack Pipkin fell in love with flying at the first sight of an airplane when he was a boy. Nearing the end of his flight training to become an Air Force pilot, he met and later married his beloved wife, Kitty, in 1943, shortly after graduating from cadet flying school in Southern California. With the family situated in South Carolina, Jack was sent to India to fly the perilous Burma "Hump," ferrying supplies to China during World War II, for which he received the Distinguished Flying Cross for bravery. This was one of the many medals Jack Pipkin received flying C-46s, C-47s, C-97s and a plethora of other vintage airplanes during the course of his Air Force career. He saw duty in Alaska, Texas, California and Japan where he commanded the 54th Air Transport Squadron during the end of the Korean War conflict. Soon after the war ended, Col. Pipkin was stationed at Travis Air Force Base where he continued to fly missions abroad until his retirement in 1960. Jack Pipkin's love for family was evident his entire life. He enjoyed camping, fishing and entertaining friends, but he measured his personal success by the happiness he brought into the lives of his wife, Kitty, and his children, Ron, Dan, Sharyl and Linda. In midlife, Jack acquired an avid interest in classic cars. He purchased a Model A Ford that gave him and his wife a great deal of joy and personal satisfaction. Later, in 1973, after persuading a stubborn Rolls Royce owner to sell him his car, Jack became the proud owner of an unrestored and aged 1927 Phantom I Rolls Royce that, with the help of his son-in-law Larry Heber, he managed to restore to its original glory. Jack's famous Rolls Royce later went on to snag countless awards around California and Washington, where he took his car to the "Grand National Championship" award in his Rolls Royce class in 1975. Lt. Col Pipkin leaves behind his loving wife, Kitty, of 63 years; sons,
