Here we present a preview of the top 20 coatings companies. By McColloch, Louis Date: Monday, November 1 2004 You are viewing page 1 Here we present the profiles of the leading top 20 paint and coatings companies in Europe. The top 50 paint companies appear in full in the European Coatings Review that appears in the PPCJ YEARBOOK 2005. These top 20 companies were selected on the basis of the quantity of paint in volume terms that they sell annually. Most of them have their global headquarters in Europe or in the America's. For the reader to fully appreciate the information, it is important to understand our definition of Europe. In its shortened form it is EMEA and includes Western Europe, Eastern Europe, the countries of the former Soviet Union, the Middle east and Africa. So, for example, in the complete Top 50 you will find companies from Israel, Jordan and South Africa being featured. Perhaps surprisingly some of the world's largest paint companies do not appear in our review. Companies like Sherwin-Williams from the USA, Nippon, Kansai and DNT from Japan. The reason is that the bar for entry has been set at about 100m

[euro] sales in Europe and that excludes certain otherwise very large and important companies in the coatings industry. Like saying 'new' or 'first' it is always presumptuous to use the words 'largest' and no doubt there are other companies out there who might justifiably claim a place in this exclusive club. If there are we would like to hear about them so they can be included next time. Top 20 paintmaker--listing by volume

Others Aerospace, Coil, Marine, Protective, Transportation, Wood, Yacht Business Development 2003--Launch of Nobilas, a service provider which manages the car repair cycle 2002--New global corporate identity for Lesonal car refinish brand Market Positioning Akzo Nobel is not only the world's largest coatings company but also the only one with the broadest portfolio. It has a significant presence in all of the major market sectors except packaging and automotive OEM where it sold its business in 1998 to PPG due to lack of profitability. There are indications that it may be reconsidering its position there, perhaps in view of the conventional wisdom in the industry that being in OEM confers advantages in Refinish. Commentary Bolt-on acquisitions in mature markets. Pushing hard in Asia. Strengthening distribution capability. As the biggest paint company in the world, Akzo Nobel Coatings will continue to participate in the consolidation of the global coatings industry. Furthermore, we will continue to grow our business by a combination of organic growth, driven by innovation and technology, and selective acquisitions. At the same time, we will improve our performance. For this we are working on simplifying our business processes, lowering our cost base and maximizing our strength as a group. It is our ambitious goal to achieve a return on investment of 30%.' Rudy van der Meer- Akzo Nobel Board Member responsible for Coatings.

It would be reasonable to summarise Akzo Nobel's strategy as: Growth through * Bolt on acquisitions in mature markets * Geographic emphasis on Asia, notably China * Diversification (eg accident management services) Profit through * Lower costs * Moving along the value chain (eg Deco merchants, Refinish distributors, CV painting contractor) Focus through * Divestment of non-coatings 2. Commentary Valspar's long-term objective is 15% growth in sales and earnings through internal growth and acquisition. Also to be the lowest-cost supplier with the leading customised technology. Valspar sees its industrial product line facing one of its the biggest challenges as traditional United States customers relocate to lower cost manufacturing regions around the world. It is addressing this 'off-shoring' by quickening the pace of its industrial globalisation to maintain and enhance its position in wood, coil and other industrial coatings. 4. Top 3 in Europe--Decorative, Marine, Protective Others--Coil, Powder, Furniture, Joinery Business Development Under the name Sigma Studio, SigmaKalon introduced in Denmark a franchise system, borrowing from features of its Sigma Service Centres and the Polish Studio Dekoral shops. The franchise is aimed at independent professional painters/entrepreneurs who will have the opportunity to source 10-15% from external suppliers. Fifty studios are planned for the Danish market during the next two years. Market Positioning SigmaKalon's market position based on value is:

Decorative The Netherlands No. 1 France No. 1 Hungary No. 1 Poland No. 1 Belgium No. 2 UK No. 3 European Industrial Markets Coil Coatings No. 4 Powder Coatings (Benelux) No. 2 Special Industrial Coatings (Benelux only) No. 2 Global Marine Market No. 4 Global Protective Market No. 5 Commentary SigmaKalon was bought in March 2003 by Bain Capital for 1bn [euro] from its former parent company, TotalFinaElf. Bain Capital, which has more than $14 billion in assets under management, claims a track record of providing resources and operational support to noncore subsidiaries of large conglomerates. SigmaKalon's core business is the supply of decorative coatings and has leading positions in France, UK, Benelux, Poland and Hungary. It is number two to Akzo Nobel in decorative coatings in Europe. It looks to reduce complexity, achieve greater focus and create close relationships with customers and consumers. Through a programme of cost reductions it intends to grow margins to a position commensurate with its market leadership. The strategies include plans to develop existing leadership positions, for example in the trade coatings sector and to take advantage of new opportunities, for example in Eastern Europe and marine coatings. Its goal is to become first choice supplier across its chosen activities and distribution channels, by combining customer and consumer insight with the best production, logistics and distribution platform. 6. 1992 Hempel-Hai Hong China, Marine, Container, Protective Key Market Sectors Top 2 in Europe--Marine, Protective, Decorative Others--Container, Yacht, Offshore, Rail Business Development In 2003 Hempel:

* reformulated most of its alkyd and emulsion decorative products according to price and quality * updated its decorative brand portfolio and retail shops in the Middle East * introduced a customer management concept in Marine, concentrating services and logistics in key ports along the major shipping lanes Hempel also plans to free up more resources to invest in activities that can support the needs of the market. For example, in the autumn of 2003 it decided to close down its plant in Pinneberg, Germany and to supply from its plants in Portugal, France and its new plant in Malaysia. Market Positioning With 24 factories, 53 sales offices and 150 stocking points around the world, Hempel aims to leverage its global and local structure for international activities in the Marine and Protective markets as well as its regional position in Decorative. It is a global number three to International and Jotun in Marine and number one in Container with 97% of this business coming from China. Commentary The legal position of Hempel is important to understand. Owned by the J C Hempel Foundation since 1948, Hempel assets cannot be sold, mortgaged, used as collateral for loans, nor in any way be disposed of as long as the Foundation is in existence. Hempel's continuing goal, beginning in 2000, is to move from a predominantly country-based structure to a cost efficient, coherent, customer focused, knowledgebased, one-company organisation. Its new strategy, 'Beyond Hempel First 2005', and the new one company organisation aim at ensuring

simple procedures, clear responsibilities, efficient decision processes and mutual trust by: * working together as a team * working closely with every single customer * learning from other business areas, especially the service industry * developing innovative and superior solutions for the market. 14. In 1889 Hobrecker & Konig, forerunner of the present day Brillux, offered its customers not only paint but also technical advice, support and other services. That tradition lives on with the family-owned company, once previously Brillux Konig and Flugger, which sets its sights on being about 'more than just paint' with innovation in products, attention to service 15. To Management 2003 Imagica srl (formerly Spetra srl) Italy, Decorative To Create srl Key Market Sectors Top 3 in Europe--Decorative, Protective, General Industrial Others--OEM, ACE, Floor, Furniture, Joinery, Coil Business Development Geographic expansion has traditionally been at the heart of Tikkurila's development plans. Also, via its historical links with CPS Color (formerly known as Tikkurila CPS Oy) which it divested in 2000, it has been strong in utilising tinting systems for marketing paints and coatings. Its most recent colour system, Tikkurila Symphony, was launched in 2002. The Temaspeed Colour Service concept for industrial coatings users comprises a network of 220 distributors in more than 20 European countries. Market Positioning Tikkurila, which is responsible for Kemira's paints and coatings business, is a significant regional player in Europe, with a leading position in northern and eastern Europe. Its strongest growth is expected to come from eastern Europe, where paint markets are expanding to keep pace with rising standards of living. Tikkurila produces and markets paints and coatings for private consumers, professional painters and industrial users. In decorative paints, it markets local brands such as Tikkurila in Finland and Russia, Alcro and Beckers in Sweden, Vivacolor in the Baltic

countries and Polifarb Debica in Poland. In industrial coatings, the Tikkurila Coatings brand is widely known especially in the Nordic countries and the Baltic States. Commentary Tikkurila is owned by the 2.7bn [euro] Finnish-based chemicals group Kemira Oyj. In accordance with the faster implementation scheme of its strategy as launched by the new CEO Lasse Kurkilahti, Kemira has quickened its pace of development in its current businesses and in an active search for potential acquisitions. Kemira's goal is to strengthen its four core businesses consisting of Pulp & Paper Chemicals, Kemwater, Industrial Chemicals, and Paints Coatings. Operationally, decorative paints within the Tikkurila Group are the responsibility of Tikkurila Deco, and Tikkurila Coatings is responsible for industrial coatings. Tikkurila Oy produces binders and acts as the parent company. Tikkurila, following the Alcro-Beckers acquisition in 2001 saw itself as creating a strong, Nordic-based paint group as a counterweight to the large multinational companies. Today it claims to be the biggest paint producer in the Nordic countries and Baltic States, and aims at a position among the top five in Europe. Tikkurila plans for its paints and coatings operations to grow in the Baltic Rim area and in eastern Europe, including the CIS countries, through strong local brands and comprehensive service. 17. In Italy, despite its leading position in DIY and Professional sectors, Lafarge is still looking for more acquisitions in the least consolidated market in Europe. Market Positioning

Through its various companies and brands, Lafarge Peintures offers a full range of paints to meet the needs of professionals in the building sector and of the general public, including a captive decorators merchant chain selling paints, floor and wall coverings and tooling. Commentary The recent history of Lafarge in paints began in 1986 with the formation of Lafarge Nouveaux Materiaux, under which umbrella structure Lafarge began to assemble a number of small and mediumsized enterprises active in coatings, additives, paints etc. In 1998 the company announced a merger with Sigma Coatings, then part of Petrofina, only to see the plan foiled when Petrofina itself merged a year later with Total. Lafarge's parent sold most of its Lafarge Nouveaux Materiaux or its Specialty Products Division, which included paints, in 2001 for 890m [euro] to the investment funds CVC Capital Partners and Advent International but retained one third of the capital of the newly created company, Materis, under the previous management team. Materis was then sold on to venture capitalists LBO France in 2003 for 1.1bn [euro]. Materis comprises five divisions: Aluminates, Mortars, Admixtures, Refractories and Paints. Its sales were 1.2bn [euro] in 2002, (930m [euro] in 1999) with over 5,000 employees and operations in more than 20 countries. Lafarge's long-held ambition is to be among the top five paint companies in Europe with a range of customer-focused brands by: * launching new products and services * making technological leaps * meeting the quality challenge * continuously improving the performance of its production units 19. It also has joint ventures with world technology leaders to supply automotive coatings in Southern Africa.
