6 (a) A car accelerates at a uniform rate from 5 m s -1 to 30 m s-1 in 5 s.

Calculate i) the acceleration of the car

....... [ 1 mark ] ii) the velocity of the car after accelerating uniformly for the first 2 s.

....... [ 1 mark ] iii) the distance travelled by the car in 5 s.

....... [ 1 mark ] iv) if the car continues to accelerate at the same rate, state one way how to calculate the total distance travelled. ....... [ 1 mark ]

(b) A stone is thrown vertically upwards at a velocity of 20 m s-1. If the gravitational acceleration is 10 m s-2 and the air resistance is neglected, calculate: (Hint: student may use the equation of motion) i) the time it will take the stone to reach the maximum height. ....... [ 2 mark ] ii) the maximum height reached by the stone.

....... [ 2 mark ]
SOLUTION: 1. a) i) a = 5 m s-2 ii) v = 15 m s-1 iii) s = 87.5 m iv) area under the graph

1. b) i) t = 2 seconds (use v= u + at)

ii) s = 20 m. (use s=0.5 (u + v)t )
