Does your course demands late lectures/commitments at weekends? Your nancial situation rents vary according to property type and room features How long you plan to stay in Hull as contract lengths vary. After you have taken these things into consideration, browse the chart opposite to see what facilities are available and also which you think would be the most suitable for you. Support in your accommodation What does the University provide?

We provide accommodation for full-time registered students on a contract basis. We do not provide part-time, short-term, family or hotel type accommodation for students. We aim to provide a good standard of accommodation throughout all of our properties, although quality and amenities can vary from room to room. The University recognises that life in its residences plays an important part in the educational experience of its students. As such, we have a strong commitment to the pastoral support of our residents. Fifty members of pastoral sta, in various residential and non-residential roles, encourage safe, secure, happy and peaceful environments. They also provide discreet support for students when they need help, whether practical or emotional. Any students under the age of 18 at the time of their arrival at the University are strongly advised to take up accommodation in one of the halls of residence where residential pastoral support is available. In addition to the pastoral sta for the residences, numerous other sources of help are available within the University, details of which are provided to students in their pre-arrival and new student packs.

Policies

Policy on the allocation of places

The University of Hull currently provides accommodation for approximately 2,600 single students 1360 in halls of residence, 900 in self-catering Student Houses, 288 in Taylor Court ats, about 245 in Head Leased ats and houses managed by the University, plus a large portfolio of private accommodation with The Scheme. In the halls, wherever possible, places will be allocated equally between the genders. Some halls have single-gender areas, while others use a semi-random allocation, usually with a concentration of men on the ground oor. Many houses are mixed, but some single-gender properties are also available on request. Students that have cultural, religious, medical, dietary, or other requirements need to make a decision before applying as to whether or not a mixed environment may pose diculties for them. In self-catering accommodation some students diets and stores of foodstus are likely to include meat, pork and alcoholic drinks. It is not possible to make provision for students to have extra refrigerators, cooking utensils, dining areas and kitchens for separate use.

2. Undergraduate students a stock of accommodation is reserved for new and continuing unaccompanied undergraduate students. Students admitted during the later stages of our accommodation admissions procedure, normally after 1 September 2010, are advised that available options become fewer and fewer over time until all properties are let. If demand exceeds our capacity, those whom we cannot permanently accommodate on arrival will be oered several residence options, normally on a rst come rst served basis, including the use of a temporary (fold-up bed) located in dedicated areas at the Halls of Residence with an expectation but not a guarantee that the University will accommodate this group of students in vacancies arising within the rst two weeks of the session. Students who cannot be accommodated will be directed to our Head-Leased accommodation or to a private landlord registered with The Scheme. 3. Postgraduate students a stock of accommodation has been reserved for their use in the Taylor Court Flats and our close-to-campus student houses. Postgraduate students wishing to secure a room prior to arrival should apply and pay a 150 deposit using the online application facility (please see the How to Apply section). Those students unable to pay a deposit should complete and return the application form (downloadable from the Accommodation website) to the Accommodation Oce where it will be held until your arrival, at which point you will be allocated accommodation on a rst come, rst served basis. In the event that the number of students in this category exceeds the places reserved, those arriving after all available places have been let will be assisted in nding head leased accommodation or private accommodation with The Scheme. 5. Exchange students a limited number of rooms in the student houses are reserved to meet the expected demand from exchange students (both full session and single-semester applicants.) In the event of demand exceeding supply, students will be directed to alternative accommodation within the private sector. 6. Continuing students a limited number of places are reserved for use by this group, however demand usually exceeds the number of places available.

Unfortunately, the University of Hull is unable to provide accommodation for the following
Students with children, expectant mothers or students accompanied by their family. Part-time or non-registered students The University regrets that it is unable to provide accommodation for part-time and non-registered students. Private-sector residence is recommended. Council tax implications also need to be taken into account. Married couples accommodation provided by the University is designed to meet the needs of single, unaccompanied students. Private sector accommodation is recommended.

Factors to take into consideration

Local students students whose homes are within commuting distance of the University campus are invited to contact the Accommodation Oce for information and advice if they wish to take up University residence. Please note: local students will be held liable for residence fees if, after accepting the residence contract, they return back to the family home, unless the Accommodation Oce is able to re-let the room. Specic Course Commitments Students in the Department of Drama often work irregular hours, including evenings. Students of the Hull-York Medical School may be required to attend phases of tuition/work observation in the evenings. New Nursing students course requirements have been proven to be best suited to the self-catering environment and the longer contracts oered at the student houses and the Taylor Court ats. Where a hall location is desired, contract length should be taken into account. Nursing students are advised that clinical placements will not exempt them from liability for residence fees. Any placements made by the department will be supported by public transport facilities. Studying away from Hull students who are required to spend a year away as part of their course (for example language students studying abroad or students on industrial placements) are asked to contact the Accommodation Oce for accommodation advice in December if they are due to return the following September. Mature students the residential environment preferred by mature students can be dierent from that which is enjoyed by younger undergraduates. General hall life is usually unsuitable, though some may wish to apply for Assistant Warden Posts. Places in student houses and several Taylor Court ats have been reserved to provide accommodation for mature students, dependent on demand.

Places are allocated in accordance with the following list of priorities

1. Disabled students (who have specic accommodation needs) 2. New undergraduates 3. Undergraduate students from overseas 4. Postgraduates 5. Exchange students 6. Continuing UK and EU undergraduates 1. Disabled students and those with declared and medically-certied health problems are given rst priority as appropriate. We endeavour to integrate students with disabilities within our general student community. Adapted accommodation includes Student houses Seven fully adapted, en-suite, study bedrooms in houses with adapted kitchens (two having) automated doors, suitable for wheelchair users. In addition, there are three accessible study bedrooms with shared level access bathroom facilities and adapted kitchens. Taylor Court There are 24 ground oor, en-suite study bedrooms with ramped access. The ensuite bathroom includes a raised shower tray, toilet and basin. Many rooms have some adaptations and can be tted with appropriate grabrails and shower seats on request. One block of Taylor Court (eight ground oor, eight rst oor and eight second oor ats) has a deaf alerter installed. There is no lift access in Taylor Court. Needler Hall Needler Hall has two study bedrooms with a shared bathroom suitable for wheelchair users. Thwaite Hall Thwaite Hall has three accessible study bedrooms with shared, adapted bathroom facilities. Please note that from the student bedrooms, there are ve steps down to the communal areas. Lawns Halls Nicholson Hall and Lambert Hall each have a three-bedroomed at with shared adapted bathroom facilities, suitable for wheelchair users. Please be aware that although the Lawns Centre is wheelchair accessible, other Halls on the site are not. Students with specic needs (for example arising from physical or mental health diculty) requiring University accommodation are asked to contact the Accommodation Oce as soon as they accept an oer (rmly or provisionally).

All students are expected to take up occupation of their room by 9.00 am on Thursday 30 September 2010 (unless alternative arrangements have been made with the Accommodation Oce). Failure to do so may result in the University keeping some or all of the deposit until the room has been re-let.
