THE PRIMER ON RESEARCH 2

1. Research 2 is an output-oriented subject. Written exams are rare and given only when absolutely necessary. Your grades will be based on the output you submit and efforts you show. This means that experiments and work ethics play a big part on how you will be marked. 2. This is also unlike other subjects since a big part of the course is independent work. Consultations with your research adviser and technical consultants are critical to the success of your activities. Schedule appointments with these people as they will not be the ones to run after you. Responsibility is the key. You have to learn how to properly manage your time, smartly organize your activities, continuously read to understand the scientific and technical principles behind your study, work with a team (even if you dont feel like doing so), and check your progress. 3. There will be no lectures, no regular classroom instruction. Consultations are graded so make sure you show your faces to your adviser and consultants. And when you do show your face, couple it with an inquisitive brain. Prepare your questions before hand and do not just sit during these sessions looking blankly at the wall. Please remember that you are graded during consultations. If it is not the regular Research 2 schedule, make an appointment with the adviser/consultant for these sessions. As much as possible, avoid ambush interviews as your teachers are also busy people. 4. Outputs are graded according to a set of rubrics prepared by the Research Unit. This will be This also means that you should be distributed for your guidance and reflection(). responsible in tracking your performance. 5. There are respective permits for when you are doing research-related activities. The forms are included here so please reproduce these for future use. Also check your student handbook for guidance in going off-campus, doing lab work during non-school days and beyond 5 pm. 6. When you need to ask for technical help from certain institutions, bring with you your introductory letter bearing the necessary signatures. And conduct yourself in a way that is befitting scholars of your caliber. Remember, you are carrying with you the name of the school (handle it with care). 7. Bear in mind that it is just normal to have rough times in research. There is always a silver lining at the end of a storm (or is it a rainbow?). Put in your best effort and we (your advisers) will see it. We may act and talk tough many times but we do that to instill discipline and to push you to do what needs to be done. 8. Research is a subject that ties together what you have learned from all your subjects. It is not only content were talking about here but skills and values. This subject is the ultimate training ground that marks the life of the Pisay scholar. This is the reason why even if its a 1-unit course, it will make use of more than 3 hours of your week.
