4:00pm Skills: Reading & Speaking Theme: Night Out in Town Level: Mixed aimed at low-intermediate Main Aim: Reading Sub-aim: practicing speaking Learning Objectives Students will be able to practice different types of reading skills: predicting, skimming and scanning. Students will become familiar with verbs in the past aimed specially at low-intermediate students. Students will be able to talk about their night outs and make predictions using I guess/I think. Personal Teaching Objectives Manage timing appropriately. Give clear, concise instructions. Use both Instruction Checking Questions (I.C.Qs) and Concept Checking Questions (C.C.Qs) effectively. Minimize TTT. Anticipated Problems and Solutions Problem: Students may ask questions about the pronunciation of certain verbs in the past. Solution: Be prepared to answer questions about that, using lots of drilling and IPA. Problem: Students may be concerned with each and every word s meaning. Solution: Tell students to focus on content or guess words by context. Problem: Some activities may take longer than expected for various reasons. Solution: make sure to thoroughly pay attention to set time for each of the activities. Introduction & Engage Procedure Timing Interaction T Ss Purpose The purpose of the introduction is for me to learn the students names and for them to learn each other s names as well as become more comfortable.

Warmer guess the information 3 min 1. I will introduce myself and ask students to quickly write their names on the plates that are placed on their desks. 2. Now students have to quickly introduce themselves to each other and say where they usually go for their night outs in their countries. My name is Karla and I usually go to different pubs. 3. Then, after everyone has met, ask students: Who can tell me about ________ s favorite night out place? 4. Get feedback on their answers. 1. Put students into pairs (or groups of 5 min three if odd numbers) 2. Give them a sheet of paper with different questions related to night outs in different places. 3. Give instructions: These are some questions related to NIGHT OUTS. Ask the person sitting next you all of the questions and try to find 2 things in common and 2 different things between you two. 4. Ask I.C.Qs 5. Hand out cards. 6. Turn on the radio. 7. After Students have finished, get some feedback. Build a list on the board of different places in town, check the ones they mention. This is to introduce the topic of night out to the students and get them interested in the topic. It is also meant to help them focus on speaking.

Interaction S-S

Purpose To revise verbs in the past in their regular and irregular forms that happen to be key vocabulary on both texts.

1. Pre-teach vocabulary: regular / 5min irregular verbs in the past 2. Write the verbs on the board and have their equivalent past form on a card. 3. Tell students they have to organize them together, but one of them will be doing that on the board. 4. Give instructions: Here you have a list of verbs in the infinitive form. You are going to help your friend to organize

them with their past forms. Give one example. 5. Ask I.C.Q.s 6. After they finish organizing, concept check, drill and work on pronunciation. Predictions PRE READING 10 min 1. Tell students that the words on the board are related to the text they are going to read. 2. Give instructions: Talk to your partner and decide what these words have to do with the text. I ll do the first one as a model . 3. Give students some prompt sentences to start guessing such as: - I think - I guess - Maybe - My guess is 4. Ask students I.C.Q.s 5. After having discussed the sentences, get students say what their predictions are. 6. Give instructions: Now, read the article quickly, skim the article, to check if your predictions were right. Be prepared to tell me where in the article you found the information. 7. Use the I.C.Qs. 8. Hand out the article. 9. Feedback: Were any of your predictions correct? How do you know? Where did you find each of these? S-S To get students to practice making predictions based on clues that are related to the text and infer on information that is going to be part of it. It will also require students to work on skimming skills.

Controlled Procedure 1. Timing Interaction IND. Purpose To practice scanning for information and organization of paragraphs in a text.

Scanning 5 min Give instructions: In this exercise you are going to read the article in details and try to find the correct paragraph for each of these questions. There is one paragraph for each question. Hand out questions. Ask students I.C.Q.s Allow students specific time to work on reading and matching the paragraphs to the questions.

5. You have 5 minutes to scan and answer the exercise. 6. Students pair check their answers telling each other where they found each one of them. Intensive 10 min 1. Give instructions: Read the text carefully in order to answer these true and false questions. Correct the false ones. 2. Ask I.C.Q.s 3. Hand out the second exercise. 4. Allow students to read the text one more time and then answer the true or false questions. 5. Students pair check their answers. 6. Competition: give students a cup. They have to hit the cup first in order to answer one question. If the question is false, then they must correct it. 7. Give instructions: This cup is your buzz. When I count to three and say GO, you must smash it. If you are the first, you get to answer one question. Remember, if the question is FALSE, you have to correct it. 8. Give chocolates as prizes. To practice intensive reading and get students to fully comprehend the text.

Interaction S-Ss

Purpose To practice speaking skills as well as practice the use of the introduced vocabulary. It will also give the teacher a chance to practice monitoring and error correcting. They will also get the chance to use the information from the article.

1. Tell students the classroom is now 15 min a pub and they are going to meet their friends at this pub by chance. (explain by chance, if needed). 2. Give instructions: You are going to imagine this classroom is now a pub. On each corner of the pub, you have questions about your friends last night out. When they music is playing, walk around the class. When the music stops, you should go to one of the corners and talk to your partner about your night out using the questions. 3. Ask I.C.Q.s 4. Turn on the radio and stop it at every occasion. 5. The questions follow prompts that

can be found on the teacher s notes. 6. Feedback: Who had the most similar night out recently? Students report. Feedback 1. Monitor the conversations; listen 7min for usage of the introduced vocabulary, specially verbs in the past. 2. Write different sentences on the board that were used throughout the lesson with gaps too, so students can complete them. 3. Teacher Class correction. To practice error correcting in a way not to make students feel embarrassed, but engaged.
