Prayer for a New Bishop

Almighty God, send your Holy Spirit to guide those who will advise the Holy Father in the selection of the next Bishop of the Diocese of Fresno. May he have the zeal of Saint Paul, the priestly gifts of Saint John Vianney, the wisdom of a loving father and brother, and most of all, the heart of your Son, Jesus. We ask that the Blessed Virgin Mary intercede for us, and Saint Therese, our patroness, join us in this prayer, which we make through Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Prayer for Vocations

HIDDEN IN PLAIN SIGHT A crowd gathers to hear Jesus, "about ve thousand men, not coun ng women and children" (Ma hew 14:21). Jesus' feeding of such a large gathering with only ve small loaves and two sh is a true miracle. It is not a magic trick to impress or fool us. Jesus is using signs and symbols to get our a en on. Signs and symbols play a vital role in all human culture, but they vary in meaning from place to place: a handshake, a bow, an embrace, or a hug can have many meanings. Jesus' feeding the crowd is a sign of his power and a symbol of the Eucharist we now share. But remember the phrase "not coun ng women and children." Who does "not count" among the crowd in the community of faith? How can we feed the hidden ones who are starving--for a enon, a kind word, a helping hand? What can we do to make a dierence? LIVING STEWARDSHIP NOW People do not feel they belong unless they rst feel welcome. Serve the "uncounted" ones in the parish by par cipa ng in a hospitality or welcoming ministry.

Lord Jesus Christ, shepherd of souls, who called the apostles to be fishers of men, raise up new apostles in your church. Teach them that to serve you is to reign, to possess you is to possess all things. Kindle in the young hearts of our sons and daughters the fire of zeal of souls. Make them eager to spread your kingdom upon earth. Keep our present religious and seminarians healthy, both physically and spiritually. Grant them courage to follow you, who are the Way, the Truth and the Life, who lives and reigns forever and ever. Amen.

The Holy Fathers August Intentions

General Intention: That the World Youth Day taking place in Madrid may encourage all the young people of the world to root and found their lives in Christ. Missionary Intention: That Christians of the West, docile to the action of the Holy Spirit, may re-encounter the freshness and enthusiasm of their faith.

Welcoming the Roman Missal (Third Edition)

Why has the response et cum spiritu tuo been translated as and with your spirit? The retranslation was necessary because it is a more correct rendering of et cum spiritu tuo. Recent scholarship has recognized the need for a more precise translation capable of expressing the full meaning of the Latin text. Where does this dialogue come from? The response et cum spiritu tuo is found in the Liturgies of both East and West, from the earliest days of the Church. One of the first instances of its use is found in the Traditio Apostolica of St. Hippolytus, composed in Greek around AD 215. How is this dialogue used in the Liturgy? The dialogue is only used between the priest and the people, MISSION STATEMENT As faithful disciples of Christ, we, the Catholic Community of St. Mary & St. Katherine, proclaim our threefold mission: to worship God, to share our faith, and to serve those who are in need. or exceptionally, between the deacon and the people. The greeting is never used in the Roman Liturgy between a non-ordained person and the gathered assembly. What does the priest mean when he says The Lord be with you? By greeting the people with the words The Lord be with you, the priest expresses his desire that the dynamic activity of Gods spirit be given to the people of God, enabling them to do the work of transforming the world that God has entrusted to them. What do the people mean when they respond and with your spirit? The expression et cum spiritu tuo is only addressed to an ordained minister. Some scholars have suggested that spiritu refers to the gift of the spirit he received at ordination. In their response, the people assure the priest of the same divine assistance of Gods spirit and, more specifically, help for the priest to use the charismatic gifts given to him in ordination and in so doing to fulfill his prophetic function in the Church.
