Disclosure Document Oak Canyon View Orchestra Together We Learn Music for Life Welcome back!

I hope you all had an enjoyable and fun-filled summer! I look forward to sharing with you my love for learning, music, and the orchestra organization. This program should be a place for each student to learn and to improve special talents as well as to develop leadership and ownership of his or her orchestra. This document outlines the rules and procedures that will be essential for a successful program and a successful student. I ensure you that I am a hard and dedicated worker and I expect the same from my students. Orchestra can be extremely fun and rewarding, but not necessarily easy. It will be deeply rewarding when the effort is put in. In addition, the program greatly depends on student and community ownership. This includes input from both students and parents on a regular basis. It is very important to me that teacher, student, and family work together in this organization. Please do not hesitate to contact me if there is ever a question or concern. I look forward to working with each of you and to our time together. Elizabeth M. Pencils are crucial to a successful rehearsal and pens will not be allowed. Violins and violas will also be required to have a shoulder rest. Cellos and basses will also be required to own a rock stop, but do not have to bring it to class. Intermediate and Advanced Orchestras are also required to have mutes. In addition, a metronome and tuner are recommended and will be useful tools throughout your students musical career. The books required for all students are as follows: Beginning Orchestra: Essential Elements 2000 for Strings Book I (Orange) Intermediate Orchestra: Essential Elements 2000 for Strings Book II (Purple) Advanced Orchestra: Essential Elements 2000 for Strings Books III (Green) Please be sure to get the appropriate book for your instrument. These books should be available at local music stores such as Summerhays and Bert Murdock. They are also available online at www.sharmusic.com. All materials must be in class for a participation grade by the third week of school.

Instrument Rentals Cellos, basses, and a few violas can be rented from the school for the year for a fee of $70 to ease the burden of instrument transportation. However, all students must have a home instrument for individual practice. A second bass or cello may be rented for home use for $35, if sufficient supplies are available. Violin and viola students must bring their instruments from home daily. Basses and cellos are not allowed to be carried on the bus. If you do not wish to rent from the school, you may rent from local suppliers and participate in a rent-to-own program. However, the student may complete a makeup assignment to avoid a deduction in the grade. Promptness to class is counted as participation. Attendance to after schools rehearsals is also a participation grade. Students will have 3 minutes after the bell to be in their seats and unpacked with materials ready to tune. Failure to do so will result in a point deduction. Participation includes things such as following class rules and showing respect. The student will keep track of his or her participation grade on the participation rubric. Homework Grades (20%)

An additional one may be done for extra credit per term. A simple concert worksheet must be filled out and turned in with the program for credit. Make Up/Replay Policy Students who wish to replay a test have until the concert to do so, but are required to come in outside of class. Replays will affect the grade, but not the seating. Discipline Students are expected to be on time and respectful. Respect includes keeping self and instrument quiet while the teacher is talking as well as when peers are talking or performing. Respect also refers to attitude, willingness, and participation in class. No cell phones, ipods, or other electronic devices will be permitted in the classroom. Such objects will be confiscated and will not be returned until the end of the school day. In addition to ensure the safety of our instruments, there is NO CHEWING GUM in the orchestra room. Failure to adhere to these rules will result in participation point reductions, conference with student and/or parent, or detention. Concert dress for Advanced Orchestras includes solid black for ladies and black pants, white shirt, and black jacket for gentlemen. Ties are not required.
