is applied at the other end. Taking E = 200GN/m2 , find:
5. A 350 mm × 165 mm R.S.joist is used as a strut, 6 metres long, one end fixed, the
other hinged. Calculate the crippling load by Rankine?s formula. Compare this
with the load obtained by the Euler formula, taking E = 2 × 105 N/mm2 . For what
length of this strut will the two formulae give the same crippling load? For the
joist, area of section = 630mm2 Ixx = 13158.3 ×104 mm4 ; Iyy = 631.9 × 104 mm4 .
Take f c = 315N/mm2 . [16]

6. A horizontal strut 3m long is of-hollow circular section 16cm external dia. And
internal dia. 14cm. It carries an end thrust of 300kN along with a u.d.l of 5kN/m.
Assuming the ends as hinged and taking the self weight also into account, calculate
the max. stress induced in the section (Density = 78.5kN/m3 ). [16]
7. Compare the values of max. and minimum hoop stresses for a cast steel cylindrical
shell of 600 mm external dia. And 400 mm internal dia. Subjected to a pressure
of 30N/mm2 applied:

1. At a point is an elastic material there are normal stresses of 35MPa (tensile) and
25MPa (compressive) on two mutually perpendicular planes, accompanied by shear-
ing stresses of 10MPa on the same planes. The loading on the material is increased
so that the stresses reach values of K times those given. If the max. direct stress is
not to exceed 80MPa and the max shear stress is not to exceed 50 MPa, find the
max value of K. [16]
2. Calculate the dia of a steel rod according to max. shear stress theory if it has to
with stand an axial pull of 10 kN and a transverse shear of 6 kN. The elastic limit
in tension is 240 MPa and the factor of safety 3. [16]
3. Calculate equivalent B.M. and equivalent T.M. in the case of a shaft 80mm dia.
subjected to a B.M. of 10 kN-m and a twisting moment of 15 kN-m. Find also
the max. values of the direct and shear stresses induced and specify the planes on
which they act. [16]
6. A short C.I. Pillar 80mm in external dia and 10mm thick carry’s a load of 200kN.
If the load deviates from the center by 20mm calculate the extreme intensities of
stresses induced in the section. What deviation will just cause tension in the pillar?
Sketch the stress distribution. [16]
7. Compare the values of max. and minimum hoop stresses for a cast steel cylindrical
shell of 600 mm external dia. And 400 mm internal dia. Subjected to a pressure
of 30N/mm2 applied:

a beam. It is subjected to a B.M. of 10KN-M acting in the vertical plane through
the c.g. of the section. Locate the neutral axis of the section. Determine the max.
