Substitute Plan – Thursday, September 18, 2008

Blue Day

Biology: Period 2
7:55 am - 9:25 am

1. Please take attendance on clipboard. You’ll need to call in attendance

to the office.
2. I’ve emailed students about what I’d like them to do. They are working
on their Ecocolumn Labs. They should be working on these things:
a. Taking measurements for today’s data collection.
b. Finishing soil nutrient testing (see below)
i. The soil nutrient tests are on the front lab bench. Students
are familiar with the instructions for these tests. They
need to make sure that NO MUD goes DOWN the SINK.
Please make sure they are wiping out beakers with paper
towels. They should clean up after themselves
COMPLETELY. If you could keep an eye on that, that would
help a lot.
c. Adding the variable to their ecocolumns.
d. Working on any missing pieces from their journals.

3. When they finish work on Ecocolumns, they should work on the

homework assignment for Section 1.3 and Chapter 14. Their textbooks
are online.
Sec.1.3 p.20, Fig.1.17 ques.
p.26. #15-20
DBQ #23,24

class.

Physical Science: Period 4

10:54 am – 12:24 pm

5. Please take attendance on clipboard & call it into the office.

6. I’ve emailed students about what I’d like them to do.
a. Take the Practice Quiz on Unit Convertions and turn it in.
i. Please give them the Unit Conversions Practice Quiz. They
should work alone and turn it into you when they finish.

b. When you finish the quiz, please write a constructed response to the two
questions below. These should be in the BODY of an email to me. Please
make sure to have a subject line. The questions are also located at yhs-
wooten.wikispaces.com/Intro+Unit
c. After you send your constructed response, please check your homework
answers from the Answer Key (attached). Pay careful attention to the 5 steps
shown. Finish the remaining 3 problems using that method. Check your
answers on the Answer Key. I'll check these next class.
d. Do Part 2 of the Density Investigation. Be sure to record all data. Use the
rules of data tables. Show all calculations. Use the 5-step method.
i. The materials are located on the front lab bench and in the
cabinets. Students know where triple beam balances and
graduated cylinders are. Students should return all
materials as they finish using them. Please stop them with
5 minutes of class left to clean up.
e. Homework: The attached homework sheet. This will also be handed out.
i. Please hand out the homework if students finish the
density work, or during the last 5 minutes of class.
Constructed Response Questions: Mass and Volume
Please type individual responses to these questions. You may have some discussion with
your table if you need to. Please email those responses to Ms. Wooten. Include an
appropriate subject line.

1. What are some factors that can cause error in measuring mass in the last lab? How
might you eliminate some of those errors?

2. You were asked to measure the volume of a golf ball with two different techniques, by
displacement and by a formula. Assuming you were able to measure them with as much
accuracy as possible with the tools given, which technique would you rely on to be a more
reliable answer? List the strengths and limitations of both techniques.

Physical Science: Period 5

12:55 pm – 2:25 pm
7. Please take attendance on clipboard & call it into the office.
8. This class will follow the same plan as period 4.

Please let me know if you have any problems. Thanks so much for your help
today!
