La storia di Momo ebbe inizio nei lontani anni ’60. Anni di gare mozzafiato, con una Formula 1
nata soltanto undici anni prima e vetture che dovevano essere guidate col cuore, oltre che con
la mente. L’elettronica applicata all’auto era solo fantascienza e i volanti erano mere appendici
delle ruote. Tutti, tranne uno. Quello di Giampiero Moretti, pilota amatoriale che, nel 1964, portò
al debutto un volante in pelle più piccolo e dall’impugnatura più ampia rispetto qualsiasi altro:
era il primo volante Momo della storia. John Surtees, pilota di punta della F1, ne chiese uno iden-
tico per la sua monoposto e, con il volante Momo tra le mani, alla fine della stagione si laureò
campione del mondo. E quello fu solo l’inizio.

Momo’s history begins way back in the 1960s. These were years of amazing racing, just 11
years after the birth of Formula 1, with cars that must be driven with the heart and not just the
head. Car electronics are only science fiction at this time, and steering wheels just something
that connects to the wheels. With one exception. In 1964 gentleman racer Giampiero Moretti
develops a smaller leather steering wheel with a much larger grip: the first Momo steering
wheel. Formula 1 driver John Surtees sees this steering wheel and asks for one just like it for
his car. He goes on to win that year’s championship with a Momo steering wheel in his hands.
And that was just the beginning.

Racing cars make huge leaps forwards both mechanically and aerodynamically. And the steering
wheel is no exception: the famous Momo steering wheel which accompanied Surtees to the world
championship ten years earlier is now used by many teams in all the major racing championships
worldwide. Continued success ensures Momo’s popularity keeps increasing.

Gli anni ’80 segnarono un’importante evoluzione nella guida, con l’introduzione dei primi volanti
veramente anatomici, dotati di impugnature speciali che miglioravano la presa o con forme inso-
lite della corona, studiate per agevolare i movimenti del pilota in abitacoli sempre più angusti.
I celebri circuiti americani furono il trampolino di lancio del marchio Momo negli USA, dove
Moretti e altri grandi piloti, segnarono una serie incredibile di successi. Nello stesso decennio,
debuttarono in grande stile le ruote in lega leggera da competizione, prima realizzate in alluminio
e poi in magnesio: nel 1983, la celebre scuderia Brabham si aggiudicò il mondiale F1, equipag-
giata con ruote e volante forniti da Momo.

The 1980s see an important evolution in the driving experience with the introduction of the first
truly anatomical steering wheels, designed with special handgrips to improve handling and with
unconventional shapes, better suited to the increasingly cramped cockpits. The string of great
race results Moretti and other leading drivers have on many of the United States’ legendary
circuits serve as a launch pad for the Momo brand in the US. During this same decade, Momo
debuts its competition road wheels, cast first in aluminum and subsequently magnesium, and in
1983 the Brabham team wins the F1 championship equipped with Momo steering wheels and
road wheels.

division, producing Momo’s first range of fireproof racewear. Momo’s success on the circuits of
every continent increases year by year, as does the involvement in US championships, supporting

While it began in the previous decade, the use of electronics in racing cars becomes widespread
in this period. Steering wheels develop into comprehensive control panels, looking increasingly
like aircraft controls rather than standard steering wheels. Michael Schumacher is the driver

Momo takes part in the prestigious GP2 and GP2 Asia championships, as well as the FIA GT and
BTCC. Several teams are equipped with Momo products: Dams, Fisichella Motorsport, Trident
Racing, 888, Epsilon, AF Corse, Jenzer, just to mention a few. There are numerous championship
victories too, such as A1GP, Formula Renault, Formula Palmer Audi, Speedcar Series and Super-

MOMO: since 1964 is synonimous with the steering wheel. Everything started with the passion of
its founder for motorsports and the development of a steering wheel with a very particular grip.
A steering wheel which captured John Surtees’ attention, who at the time was racing with Ferrari.
And it marked the beginning of a cooperation to develop over the following years and to become
a worldwide business. The cooperation with the most important drivers in the world and their sugge
stions on the ergonomics of the steering wheels became a constant reference in MOMO’s production,
