What is Science?

a. b. c. d. e. f. g. h. i. An understandable look at the natural world A set of lasting or durable facts that change only when new data is discovered Scientists are always discovering new information and new instruments. What scientists agree is the best explanation for phenomena Something that is always open to improvement. Something that is never finished and little of it is certain. New questions arise, new theories are proposed, new instruments are invented, and new techniques are developed that add to science. Scientists use creativity to visualize how nature works, using analogies, metaphors, and mathematics. Scientist communicate their findings to other scientists and attempt to replicate one anothers findings. Sometimes these scientists are experts in different areas of science and see things differently. Science is a body of knowledge that is relevant to every day living

Measurement

is a quantitative observation of:

1. Length- linear distance between two points. The basic unit of length is the _______

2. Mass is the amount of _____in an object. The basic unit of mass is the _______

3. Volume is the amount of _______taken up by an object. The basic unit of volume is the ______

. 4. Temperature is the amount of ____ given off by an object. Temperature is measure in degrees _______.

5. Elapsed Time is the amount of time that passes from the beginning to the end of an event.

It is usually measured in Seconds Minutes Hours Days Year

Measuring Instruments
The instrument for measuring is the _______ stick or metric ruler. These are the metric units of length. Millimeter= 1/1000 of one meter Centimeter= 1/100 of one meter Meter= a little more than a yard Kilometer= 1000 meters The instrument used for measuring is the ____________________. The units of measure for mass include grams and kilograms.

Data Collection, Recording, and Reporting

Systematic investigations require ________________________ reporting of data. These make it easier to see important . 1. _____________________________ 2. _____________________________ 3. _____________________________ Organized Ways of presenting data Charts Tables Bar graphs Line graphs

Bar graphs show numerical values visually.

Line Graphs show how data changes over time.

Steps of a Scientific Investigation:

y y

State scientific question. Form a hypothesis.

- a statement that uses a few observations - an idea based on observations without experimental evidence

y y y y y

List all necessary materials. Plan and list procedures. Experiment to test the hypothesis Record observations and inferences. Draw a conclusion that either proves, disproves, or changes the hypothesis.

Scientific Prediction is a forecast about what may

happen in some future situation based on facts, trends, and patterns.. It is based on the application of factual information and principles
and recognition of trends and patterns.

Hummmm. What will probably happen if I leave water on the stove boiling for an hour?

Estimation

is the description of a measurement based on prior

experience with that type of measurement. Estimation is a useful tool for making approximate measures and giving general descriptions. In order to make reliable estimates, one must have experience using the particular unit

Hummmm. How much does that elephant probably weigh?

How to Properly Conduct an Experiment

1. Use a testable question to form a _____________________. 2. Analyze the variables in a simple experiment and identify the ________________________ and ________________variables and the constants. 3. Research the subject. 4. Select and use the appropriate instruments, including centimeter rulers, meter sticks, graduated cylinders, balances, stopwatches, and thermometers for making basic measurements. 5. Collect, record, analyze, and report data, using ___________ and _________, and translate numerical data into __________ or ________ graphs. 6. When conducting experiments, data are collected, recorded, analyzed, and communicated using proper graphical representations and metric measurements. 7. Make predictions based on trends in data. 8. Make inferences and draw (or modify) your conclusions

Conducting your Experiment:

What is your hypothesis? What is your dependent variable?

What is your independent variable?

What is your constant?

What will you be measuring and what tools will you need to do it?

How will you present your data? (chart, table, graph)

What did you expect to happen?

What happened?
