English Short Story Unit Overview


You will learn to identify and analyze elements of a short story. You will be able to apply these elements/techniques in your own narrative writing. You will able to identify and analyze styles of writers based on the use of elements of a short story, sentence length, diction, and content. You will be expected to know and understand the elements of a short story and analyze a short story based on the support of these elements and articulate how these elements may contribute to the meaning of the work.

Day Plan 1
Course: ENGLISH Unit: SHORT STORY: Introduction and Structure Day: 1 of 20 Time: 10 min 15 min Description of Activities Warm-Up: (on the board) Identify which of these is a short story:
1. A boy met a monster in the woods. The monster gobbled him up and then took a nap. 2. Twenty classmates gathered for a picnic after the school day was over. Even the teachers joined them. 3. A woman met the love of her life on a train in Switzerland. The man hardly noticed her.

Students should discuss and defend their responses. See Teacher Notes.

Group Work 1: Ask students to work in groups of 2 or 3. Assign a random quote from the list for each group. Within each group, students should discuss what the main thought/idea is about what a short story is and what are the requirements for a short story according to their quote. Hand out the List of Literary Terms for class reference. Review any terms that are unfamiliar or challenging Hand out the short story structure sheet and review the parts of a short story. Discuss the differences between a short story and a novel. See Teacher Notes.

Assigned Homework: Complete the blank Short Story Structure Sheet to include the details of your knowledge of the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. Homework Due: Day 2
