2. Identify what all students need to demonstrate they know and/or able to do Students will be able to understand content on a map. Use of certain grids and symbols to locate and orient themselves. The students will be able to read a road map and use directions to make it to desired destinations. Students must be able to measure distances based on map scale and find the fastest routes to destinations.

3. Use pre assessment results to determine if you will differentiate by readiness, learning profile or interest 4. Considering the essential learning, decide whether to differentiate content, process or product

5. Design high quality learning experience for one tier These students need more structure to create a base of understanding in reading a road map. This tier must describe the fastest ways to get to a designated destination. Students will be given several starting points and destinations. Based on the directions given out by the teacher, the students must give accurate directions and estimate the distance to get there. 1. Teacher must construct a map or use a map with various elements that need to be understood(Route symbols, Throughway symbols, roads, bridges, Compass Rose) 2. Students use a map given by the teacher and answer the provided questions 3. Students work together as a group and what route/road/highway to take to get the destination fastest. If one way is close in distance to another then the students must explain why they chose that route. 4. Students write a response, as a group, as to what they liked and disliked about the activity

6. Replicate the high quality learning experience for another tier These students are given a more complex task. These students must make a map that includes the items listed above. 1. Teacher gives the group in this tier a map of Clinton County 2. Teacher explains that the students must give their own directions to get to an assigned destination. Students must make three stops along the way to the assigned destination and explain why they stopped there. 3. Teacher also explains that the students have a student review their directions and check explanations of stops. 4. Students must highlight their journey on the map. 5. Students write a quick response to how they liked and disliked the lesson
