It is so awesome to feature a member of the Community in our publication. Each month we will provide a story about someone who is doing something positive in Wadsworth, Sharon Center, Rittman or Seville. If you know of anyone who deserves to be recognized, please email the information to our editor at PositiveTimesLR@gmail.com. Upbeat connection
By: Catherine Foster The music of Linda McNamaras life reverberates throughout Wadsworth. Although best known for her work on the brilliant musical productions presented by the high school and junior high each year, Linda has been providing joyful sounds to Wadsworth schools since 1985. Linda began her career teaching elementary school in the 1970s. After taking time off to raise her three children, Amanda, Lindsey and Craig, she joined the Wadsworth School system. With no formal training in running a music education department, Linda launched a choir program from scratch. Within a short period of time, Linda created the first show choir and began to involve her students in musical competition. The program has grown immensely since its humble beginning and now comprises of five choirs, giving her students ample opportunities to showcase their talents. Linda loves taking on musical challenges and pushing her students to do their very best. In 2011, she was the Co-Director for the spring high school production of Fiddler on the Roof. The Junior high school graced audiences with their presentation of Alice in Wonderland. In 1993, her three children performed in the schools Fiddler on the Roof production. Her daughter Mandy remembers that although all three of them were heavily involved in sports, her mom delighted in getting students in sports to cross-over into show choir as well. To this day, she is very proud of the fact that she is able to attract students from a variety of programs, including football, into show choir. Linda has had quite an impact on her students. One class Valedictorian told her that he was able to stand up in front of a large audience and give his speech

a word from Downtown Wadsworth

By: Jack Ollom Executive Director, Downtown Wadsworth A fun time was had by all who attended the first of six Downtown Wadsworths Summer Breeze Concert Series which was held on July 1, and hosted by the US Armys Field Band, The Jazz Ambassadors. July 7th was also an enjoyable evening with Idlewild, a 60s and 70s tribute band on the square in Wadsworth. The American Legions 3 on 3 in the street basketball Tournament will be on July 15th, 16th and 17th. Friday night (the 15th) from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm is Community Night. We will have food and music for your enjoyment as you watch some of our local talent play basketball. The official tournament starts at 8:00 am Saturday, July 16th and runs until approximately 3:00 pm. The tournament will conclude on Sunday July 17th. We would like to extend a special, Thank-you to Susan Arpad and her flower committee for planting the beautiful red, white and blue pots, and the coordinating baskets hanging from the lamp posts. We also want to acknowledge the three Wadsworth Gardening Clubs for their contribution in making Downtown Wadsworth look so beautiful. It is appreciated by all. Membership Chair Jim Thompson has advised that Downtown Wadsworth currently has 103 members. We would love to have you be a part of Downtown Wadsworth. We urge you to get involved with your Community, and your downtown. Become a member of Downtown Wadsworth. Go to our website, www.mswadsworth.org and join us in making our community, Downtown Wadsworth the best it can be. See you on the Square, Jack Ollom

Itll be cool in the new Wadsworth pool!

Submitted by: Wadsworth City The City of Wadsworth has hired Braun & Steidl Architects to begin the design phase for the communitys new outdoor pool. The outdoor pool will be located at the new Community Center currently being constructed as a component of the new High School Community Campus Project. Braun & Steidl will be starting the design work in the next month. The design team will consist of Braun & Steidl, Counsilman Hunsaker, Thorson Baker and McHenry. The pool will be designed by Counsilman Hunsaker, a renowned pool designer located in St. Louis. They have designed over 750 swimming pools throughout the United States on all types of projects. The plan for the outdoor pool is to initiate the design process now, have a preliminary design in 2011, fine tune this design early 2012 and go out to bid in mid 2012. Construction would begin in the fall of 2012 with the opening of the new outdoor pool being Memorial Day weekend in 2013. One of the reasons for the opening to occur in 2013 is to allow time for the demolition and removal of the old high school. The location for the new outdoor pool will be near this location and construction on the pool will need to wait until the high school has been razed. The City and Design Team will be holding some informational meetings in the coming months to receive feedback from the community as to what do they want to see in the outdoor pool. There will also be online surveys and other methods used to receive as much feedback from the community as possible. The goal is to design a pool that will stay within budget while providing the community a recreational structure that fits their needs and wants. If you are interested in providing feedback for the outdoor pool, please contact Harry Stark, Assistant Director of Public Service, at hstark@ wadsworthcity.org.

City of Wadsworth:

because of his experience in the music program. At least two of her students have made a career of musical education and have become high school music teachers. Other alumni have made it to New York City and London to pursue their musical careers. She is excited to see their success and they grow and develop in music. Linda grew up in a musical family playing the piano, flute, and a little guitar. She has fond memories of gathering around the piano and singing with her grandmother. Today, her 85 year old father is in a nursing home and is still singing at the piano to the delight of all that live and work there. Linda not only teaches others, she participates in both the Wadsworth community band and community choir. She is also the choir director at the United Methodist Church. Linda McNamara is a person who has genuinely pursued her passion. As per husband points out, there are a lot of people who dislike e their jobs and she is one of the few that he knows that honestly loves what she does. When asked about retirement, she says she cant even imagine what her life would be like if she couldnt bring music into the school any more.

This smiley face is being awarded to Linda McNamara for bringing

Deer Pass Golf Course

By: Catherine Foster Deer Pass Golf Course is a public 18hole facility built in 1998. The current owners purchased the course in 2004 with the desire to keep it the quiet little golf course that only the locals knew about. In July of 2010, Deer Pass acquired Chad Gibson as the new General Manager who used his vast experience in hosting over 3,000 golf course outings to rejuvenate this community landmark. According to Gibson, his professional goal is to put Deer Pass on the map making it a golfers destination point. Gibson went on to explain that one of his plans to achieve the goals of success for Deer Pass is that he will coordinate and facilitate all the components necessary for those organizations wishing to host their fundraising events at Deer Pass. Everything from designing flyers, setting up sponsorship levels, and coordinating meetings for commitment to ensure the

Contribute to the ahhh factor...

By: Emmaleigh Foster Definitely contributing to the ahhh factor of our life, a facial massage has a plethora of benefits that go beyond just adding an overall glow to the skin. Many dont realize the stress-relief value of a facial massage and its ability to relieve headaches and anxiety while providing mental and physical relaxation. Most people seek out the services of a professional esthetician or massage therapist so that they can experience the benefits of improved facial tone and healthy looking skin. Massage is considered to be one of the oldest forms of healing and having a facial massage on a regular basis can lead to firmer, more radiant skin by minimizing fine lines and wrinkles, moisturizing, and releasing tension. If you intend on doing your own facial massage, which isnt quite as relaxing as having it done by someone else, always use massage oil made especially for the face which is available through many skin care companies. This oil moisturizes the skin and helps facilitate movement over the delicate facial areas. Start with cleans-

Stop sitting around!

By: After Hours Family Medicine Recently studies have shown that sitting for long periods of time can undo all the good you are doing in your exercise program. Some doctors are even saying that short, 5 minute walks spread over the course of a day can be better for your health than an hour work out followed by eight hours at a desk! To combat the health challenges and metabolism slowing caused by long periods of sitting, we recommend the following: Spread out tasks that require you to get up - If you often save getting a cup of coffee, making copies and stopping to talk to coworkers to do together, dont. Instead, do one each 45 minutes or so to keep things moving. A great time to move around is when you are on the phone. Standing up can make you sound more confident as well! Have a hard time taking a break from your work? Set an alarm on your calendar for every 45-50 minutes so you get up and walk around. Or, tie movement to another activity in your head. For example, every time you check your email, finish by walking around your office three times. That will help you both move around more and manage your time as you wont check email as often!

Moving around isnt just good for your physical health but also your mental health. Giving your mind a break and leaving the work for short periods of time can help you stay focused and accomplish tasks more effectively. After Hours Family Medicine is a full service medical office able to help with everything from every day illnesses to chronic problems. We see patients between 3:00pm and 9:00pm Monday through Saturday. We are currently accepting new patients so call 330-9754255 to schedule an appointment today! By: Sharon Kreighbaum, Author Is Your House Overweight? Clutter is something that most of us believe is simply a part of life. However, as humans were located at different points on the clutter spectrum. Someone who is a minimalist would be considered a one, while someone seen on the Hoarders reality TV show is a ten. Everyone else falls somewhere in between. There are several things we can do to tame the clutter in our lives. First and foremost, it is important to be thankful for all that we have. We can then learn to be a discerning shopper and become more generous by giving to others what we no longer need. Its also important to assign a permanent home for items that will be used on a regular basis. Since the kitchen is one of the main focal

The positive impact of a clutter-free home

points of a home, and the location that most people gather, keeping it uncluttered can be a challenge. One of the best ways to organize the kitchen is by keeping all small appliances, gadgets and tools in the cupboard. This will allow your counters to be open and easy for fast clean-ups. For those with children, keeping bedrooms and playrooms as simple as possible is always the best way to go. Using labels and bin organizers will help keep everything in place and contributes to routine which is valuable for children. If you find that you have items that you dont use and still have value, consider recycling them through donation which is not only good for the environment, its good for physical and mental health while helping those who are less fortunate.

By: Scott Ryan, The Grillmaster Like most grilling artisans with a passion for ribs, there is both flexibility and imagination that go into making your ribs, YOUR ribs. Creating ribs that are falling off the bone delicious is the ultimate goal for the summertime chef. Fellow rib connoisseurs will delight in the extra effort you have put into your masterpiece of the grill. Slow cooking is the key to achieving the tenderest ribs. Cover the ribs in water and slow cook in a roaster for approximately 3 to 4 hours, at 250 degrees. Season the water with a variety of spices including: McCormicks Montreal Steak seasoning, garlic, seasoning salt, onion salt or whatever spices you like be creative. When the ribs start to pull away from the bone, take them out of the slow cooker and let the meat settle for about hour. This will help make the meat more juicy and flavorful. If you are making the ribs in advance, wrap them up and refrigerate until you are ready to use. When you have taken them out of the refrigerator, let them come to room temperature before putting them on the grill.

Put the ribs on the grill at a low to medium heat to warm them up about 5-7 minutes on each side. Now its time to slather on your favorite sauce. This should be done in the last 5-10 minutes of cooking. Adjust the heat so that the sauce is cooking into the meat, but not burning. Make sure to guard against flame-ups. Having a squirt bottle for water is helpful in putting out flame-ups. Once you take them off the grill, let them rest for about 5 minutes before cutting into them. By: Noah St. John, Author The Secret Code of Success The economy, the mortgage crisis, the credit crunch, the sky is falling. Sound familiar? Even during The Great Depression, people got rich. Why? Because some people know how to have an abundance mentality. When everyone else starts panicking, abundant people dont. Here are five ways to have an abundance mentality, even when everyone else is saying all is lost: 1. Focus on people, not things. You have

Five steps to follow for an abundance mentality

systems in your life that must operate optimally in order for you to live prosperously. The first and most important is your People System. Why? Because people have all the money! Ironically, when you put people first, the money comes as a natural result provided, of course, you follow the other steps. 2. Let go of your high and low expectations. You can see abundance even in the face of not-enoughness. The difference lies in your expectations. Stop expecting people and things to change. False expectations kill relationships, as well as your chances for abundance. When you change your perspective of something, the thing youre looking at changes. 3. Use AFFORMATIONS. No, thats not a misprint. Afformations are empowering questions that change your subconscious thought patterns from negative to positive. For example, youve probably used affirmations like, I am rich. And your brain says, Yeah, right! Instead of a statement you dont believe, asking empowering questions causes your mind to search for why you are, in fact, rich. Thats why changing the question can change your life. So ask yourself; Why am I rich? 4. Focus on what you HAVE, not on what you lack. Many people are suffering from the disease of not-enoughness. This comes from focusing on what you lack, which producesmore feelings of lack! Every morning, write 5 things youre GRATEFUL for. Focusing on what you have will build feelings of confidence and self-worthbecause what you focus on, grows. 5. Find Your Because. Most people dont know why theyre here on Earth. This leads to feelings ranging from frustration

By: Lisa Ryan On July 4, 1976, I attended a Bicentennial party at Stafford Park in Maple Heights. My father was involved in a pizza eating contest with Mariano Mushmouth Pacetti. (For those of you who watched Houlihan and Big Chuck, this should bring back a memory or two.) Mushmouth was shoveling pizza down his gullet as quickly as he could, while my father was savoring every bite. I can still remember the absolute horror I felt as an older boy pointed to my dad and said, Hey, that guy looks like hes eating his lunch. Although embarrassing at the time, it remains one of my favorite memories of my childhood. Can you believe that July 4th has already come and gone this year? After all, we waited so long for summer to get here. We froze through winter; we waded through spring, and its now primetime to enjoy some sun and summer fun. Instead, we find we are too busy to take the time to truly enjoy creating moments. We work, take care of the lawn, get the housework done, and drive the kids to and from all of their sports activities. Then, after a quick bite to eat, we crawl into bed at the end of the day, exhausted - only to do it again the next day. In all of our doing this summer, its important to remember to take time to just be and appreciate the moments of our lives. Here are some tips to get the most out

ember moment. we rem ot remember days, Cesare Pavese

of your summer activities: Turn working in the yard into playing in the yard. Make a conscious effort to appreciate the warmth of the sun, the smell of fresh cut grass, and the beauty of nature that surrounds you. Watering the lawn? Why not get a little silly and jump through the sprinkler like you used to do as a kid? It may bring back some fond memories and your kids will think that youre cool too. (Or at least theyll look back and smile about it 30 years from now.) Put up a clothesline and hang your laundry outside to dry. You have to wash clothes anyway, so why not let Mother Nature lend a helping hand. Not only will you get nature-fresh clothes, youll be a lot greener in your cleaning. Turn summer sports into an opportunity for a family picnic. Bring a blanket, an old-fashioned picnic basket, and enjoy some quality time together after the game. This is also a good time to let your child know how proud you are of them for who they are and how they contributed to their team. Positive moments like these can create lasting memories for your children. What can you do this week to create a special summertime moment for you and your loved ones? Know of any good pizza eating contests, Ill bring my dad. Feel free to share your summer stories with me at positivetimeslr@gmail.com

and stress to anger and despair. Its only natural that these feelings get exacerbated when times look tough. Focusing on whats wrong is really a bad habit you dont need any more. When you Find Your Because, youll realize that not having everything you want pales in comparison to knowing you are being the best person you can be. To celebrate growing older

No on Dont take yourself so seriously.

THOUGHT

e else does.

By: Regina Brett, age 90 To celebrate growing older, I once wrote the 45 lessons life taught me. It is the most requested column Ive ever written. My odometer rolled over to 90 in August, so here is the column once more: 1. Life isnt fair, but its still good. 2. When in doubt, just take the next small step. 3. Life is too short to waste time hating anyone. 4. Your job wont take care of you when you are sick. Your friends and parents will. Stay in touch. 5. Pay off your credit cards every month. 6. You dont have to win every argument. Agree to disagree. 7. Cry with someone. Its more healing than crying alone. 8. Its OK to get angry with God. He can take it. 9. Save for retirement starting with your first paycheck. 10. When it comes to chocolate, resistance is futile. 11. Make peace with your past so it wont screw up the present. 12. Its OK to let your children see you cry. 13. Dont compare your life to others. You have no idea what their journey is all about. 14. If a relationship has to be a secret, you shouldnt be in it. 15. Everything can change in the blink of an eye. But dont worry; God never blinks. 16. Take a deep breath. It calms the mind. 17. Get rid of anything that isnt useful, beautiful or joyful. 18. Whatever doesnt kill you really does make you stronger. 19. Its never too late to have a happy childhood. But the second one is up to you and no one else. 20. When it comes to going after what you love in life, dont take no for an answer. 21. Burn the candles, use the nice sheets, wear the fancy lingerie. Dont save it for a special occasion. Today is special. 22. Over prepare, then go with the flow. 23. Be eccentric now. Dont wait for old age to wear purple. 24. The most important sex organ is the brain. 25. No one is in charge of your happiness but you. 26. Frame every so-called disaster with these words In five years, will this matter? 27. Always choose life. 28. Forgive everyone everything. 29. What other people think of you is none of your business. 30. Time heals almost everything. Give time time. 31. However good or bad a situation is, it will change. 32. Dont take yourself so seriously. No one else does.
137 Westgate Ave. Wadsworth.

33. Believe in miracles. 34. God loves you because of who God is, not because of anything you did or didnt do. 35. Dont audit life. Show up and make the most of it now. 36. Growing old beats the alternative -- dying young. 37. Your children get only one childhood. 38. All that truly matters in the end is that you loved. 39. Get outside every day. Miracles are waiting everywhere. 40. If we all threw our problems in a pile and saw everyone elses, wed grab ours back. 41. Envy is a waste of time.. You already have all you need. 42. The best is yet to come.... 43. No matter how you feel, get up, dress up and show up. 44. Yield. 45. Life isnt tied with a bow, but its still a gift.

Healthy Habits
In a daily slump?

Those who bring sunshine to the lives of others cannot keep it from themselves. ~ J. M. Barrie

Get a good nights sleep!

Do you find yourself fatigued and yawning throughout the day? A mid-afternoon slump could really be trying to tell you something -- its likely you arent getting enough sleep! The average adult needs seven to nine hours of sleep per day to function properly. However, in a 2005 health survey, 30 percent of adults nationwide reported getting only about six hours of sleep per day. For many adults, fatigue seems inevitable. In a 2002 study conducted by the National Sleep Foundation, 37 percent of adults reported being so sleepy during the day that it interfered with their daily activities. Much of that lost sleep can be attributed to background noises. Background noise is a problem for people when they are sleeping, said Dr. Rafael Pelayo, associate professor at the Stanford Sleep Disorders Clinic at Stanford University School of Medicine. A study by Consumer Reports found that sound machines are nearly as effective as prescription sleep medications, and more effective than over-the-counter sleep medications or aids, without the side-effects. Dr. Pelayo recommends the Sound+Sleep Adaptive Sound Therapy Machine (www.soundofsleep.com) as part of a healthy sleep plan for people trying to achieve a better nights sleep with minimal use of drugs. There are a lot of dumb sound machines out there that just play constant noise in an attempt to cover up these disruptions, says Dr. Pelayo. The new Sound+Sleep responds to sudden background disturbances by adjusting its sound output to better mask the noise. For some people, the improved sound masking seems to help them sleep better. Other tips for better nighttime sleep include: * Set a regular bed time and stick to it. * Eliminate caffeine before bed. * Sleep without the lights or TV on. * Get plenty of exercise during the day.

By: Jackie Zabiegala, RDH One of the first attributes someone will notice about you is your smile. Keeping it bright and attractive can make a big difference. The ideal method to improve your smile is teeth whitening. A whiter smile gives you a healthier look and is simply more inviting. It improves your overall appearance. Most of us start out with sparkling white teeth. However through the effects of routine chewing, grinding, trauma etc, the enamel develops microscopic cracks that gradually fill up with stain and food debris. Our teeth stain or discolor for various reasons, the natural aging process and your lifestyle, including tobacco, coffee, tea, red wine, cola and certain foods contribute to staining. Sometimes even genetics are the cause. Daily brushing and flossing, though imperative to optimal dental health, cannot completely prohibit staining. Whitening your teeth is the best way to not only remove stains but to re-

Flash a brilliant smile!

store their natural white appearance. Making your teeth whiter will significantly improve your smile. Stain-free brilliant teeth can brighten your entire face and give you added confidence. Not only will people view you in a different way, but you will also feel more comfortable and sure of your appearance. By using a teeth whitening system, you can choose to look your best at all times. You will make a long lasting impression on anyone you meet just by flashing your beautiful, eye catching smile. And remember as good as whitening is for the appearance of your teeth, it is never a substitute for daily oral hygiene and regular dental visits. Dress for success. Whiten to impress!

The anatomy of a successful

By: Elaine B. Greaves, Esq. It may always be an unanswered question as to why some people rise to the top while others have dreams that quickly wilt on the vine. Its an intriguing question to ask oneself what is that intangible that sets one person apart from another when both have traveled the same road to success. What is that unknown x-factor or unexplained bit of serendipity that catapult some to heights of greatness while others are left in the dust heap of history? We all know about Abraham Lincoln but not many of us have heard about the noted statesman and Harvard President Edward Everett. As the main speaker on that November day in 1863, Everett took to the stage and spoke for two hours. Lincoln, who had only been invited to speak two weeks before the event, and who had hurriedly written what he had planned to say, was the next speaker. Lincoln then went on to utter his famous 270-word speech that we have come to know as The Gettysburg Address. Clearly Lincoln stood out while Everett disappeared into the pages of history. It could have been preparation, desire,

No piece of square dry paper can be folded in half more than 7 times? The people who make school kitchens, also make electric chairs? The average human eats 8 spiders in their lifetime at night? commitment, hard work, luck or a combination of all of these that made the difference. Although we may never be able to explain that intangible quality, the fact is that Lincoln had prepared himself for that moment. He may or may not have known how opportunity would come to him but what it tells us is that opportunity is waiting, in many forms, to reward those who are prepared to embrace it. Success can only come about when your decision is followed by action. If you are planning changes in your personal or professional life then remember that dreams without action are fruitless ventures. Do your research. Talk to experts in your field; get the proper education or training. However, dont wait until everything is perfect. Allow room for trial and error, growth and development. Decide, do your research and then act. Be sure to draw up a blueprint for your plan of action. It should include how you want your life to look and your goals both personally and professionally. Begin to dream specifically of how you want your life to be then continue by drawing up a plan of action.

Keep your dog safe & happy

By: Catherine Foster There is no doubt that your pet needs exercise and that your neighbor may not appreciate it roaming into their yard. There is also the burden of keeping your pet safe by restricting it from running away or getting into harms way. Pet containment systems, otherwise known as invisible fencing, has brought an entirely new perspective to the world of dogs. There was a time that chaining a pet to the backyard tree or putting up a view altering fence was the only way to of-

fer the opportunity to enjoy being outside. But with the new technology available today, its affordable to offer this alternative while creating the perfect environment for your four-legged family member. However, before you rush out to purchase a containment system, there are several factors to consider including your dogs temperament and your ability to commit to 7 to 10 days of training. Your pet also needs to be at least twelve-weeks old and be able to walk on a leash.

Dogs foster activity while improving health

Mans best friend provides more than mere companionship. Dogs encourage humans to exercise daily -- come rain or shine. The need to take a daily walk provides dog owners with a great form of exercise, said Leila Mureebe, a member of the Society for Vascular Surgery. Exercise is good for the bodys blood supply, for maintaining proper body weight and for controlling blood pressure. For persons with high blood pressure -- and thats one in three Americans over age 20, according to a 2010 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report -Fidos calming effect can be a life saver. Studies have disclosed that petting a dog reduces blood pressure and heart rate. This stress buster provides positive health benefits for the owners of 77.5 million dogs that reside in 39 percent of households, according to The Humane Society of the United States. High blood pressure and stress contribute to the fourth leading cause of death in America: stroke. The National Vital Statistics Report indicated that 137,000 Americans died of stroke in 2010. The American Stroke Association estimated that Americans spent $73.7 billion for stroke-related medical costs and disability in 2010. Every 40 seconds, an American suffers a stroke, said Dr. Mureebe. Strokes occur suddenly and without warning. Two million brain cells die every minute during a stroke. Eighty percent of strokes are preventable through risk factor management. Thirty minutes of daily exercise, not smoking, and proper nutrition are included in risk factor management. A United States National Institutes of Health-funded study of 2,000 adults discovered that persons who regularly walked their dogs were more physically active and less likely to be obese than nondog walkers. Ive seen improvements in high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes when patients enter into a routine of daily exercise, not smoking, and healthy eating, said Dr. Mureebe. Liberty Residence

Helping seniors feel at home

If there is one thing that todays seniors are interested in, its independence. In times past, often the older people would become more and more dependent upon their friends and family members until the point when they can no longer take care of themselves. With families often far away or just extremely busy themselves, this can come as quite a hardship for them. At Liberty Residence I we can give families the much needed help which allows them to spend quality time with their moms and dads and not worry about the day-to-day job of caring for them. Liberty Residence I provides affordable, high quality living for seniors. Far from the common perceptions of a retirement home, Liberty Residence emphasizes the best aspects of life: great neighbors, good food, a caring staff, security and a wonderful quality of life. Liberty Residence I, Senior Independent Living, and Liberty II, Senior Assisted Living, offer residents three freshly prepared meals each day and weekly housekeeping. At Liberty II, Senior Assisted Living, around the clock assistance with tasks such as medication, dressing and bathing is also provided. Liberty II is staffed around the clock with 2-3 companions and a nurse. All apartments at both communities include a kitchenette with refrigerator and microwave, bathrooms designed for safety, independent heating and cooling systems, free utilities and basic cable television along with twenty-four hour security. Liberty Residence I and II offer more than just a great place to live. Activities directors plan daily exercise classes, card games, special parties and entertainment along with weekly Bible studies. Transportation to area churches is provided on Sundays. Liberty Residences close proximity to the Great Oaks area of Wadsworth offers residents the opportunity to drive or walk to their favorite stores and restaurants. If you have been thinking about a new place to live, come to Liberty Residence I or II. Youll feel right at home. For more information and to schedule a personal tour of either community, please call Bev Long at 330.336.3616. You can also check out the website at www.libertyresidence. com for more information.

Kimmel Heating & Air Conditioning

4 steps to maintaining your air

By: Mike Kimmel Step 1: Check and Level the Condenser Check and make sure the condenser is level. If the condenser is off level, put a piece of pressure-treated lumber underneath one side to bring it back level. Step 2: Remove Debris Trim back plants and debris around the condenser. Remove bushes, trim branches, and make sure that everything is out of its way so the condenser can get proper air flow. Bushes should be kept at a distance of 2 around and 4 across the top. Step 3: Straighten Fins Make sure the fins on the coil stand up true. If these get bent, theyll block airflow. Using a piece of flatware or a fin comb, carefully straighten any fins.

Jump back into life!

By: Mary Faktor Many of us have been led to believe that at a certain advanced age we must slow down and stop taking risks. Our American society tends to think of people over 65 as a non-entity. Unfortunately, many have chosen to believe it. As I travel the country performing my comedy show and conducting life-balance workshops however, Im meeting thousands of aging Americans who are ignoring these negative expectations and turning toward adventurous and meaningful lives. Everything we become in our lives is a direct result of the choices we make on a day-to-day basis. In short, if you want to keep on getting what youve been getting, just keep on doing what youve been doing. You cant change the world. You cant change your relatives. You cant change anything but yourself and your own attitudes. I had a friend named Lorine who made her transition at the age of 93. She lived her last 13 years with an advanced case of macular degeneration, the result of which was 80% blindness in both eyes. At 4 ft, 11 inches, this now sight-impaired, yet vibrant woman had driven motorcycles, scuba dived, and traveled the world. At 83, she was the oldest woman to white-water raft in Maine. At 90, she participated fully in an intense personal growth workshop weekend. Lorine was always growing her attitude always upbeat, her smile contagious, and her personality warm and loving. The summer of her 87th birthday, I was telling her of my recent skydive. I always wanted to make a jump...thats the one thing I never got to do, she wistfully replied. Is it something you still want to? I asked. Sure! she beamed enthusiastically. I called the jumpschool, explained her unique situation, asking if this would even be possible. She could do a tandem with an instructor, IF she got an approval note from her doctor, hang suspended from a harness for three minutes, and touch her toesthen she could do a tandem jump with a jumpmaster, he replied (figuring that would be the end of that!) Within seconds, she was on the phone to her family doctor demanding an immediate fax of approval. Within 30 minutes, we were on the way to the jump site. Her excitement was contagious. Her decades of daily stretching exercises paid off as she proved to all of us she was flexible enough to pass all required tests. The jumpmaster asked her if this was something she really wanted to do, or if someone was making her do it (some wild scheme to collect her inheritance perhaps?) He reminded her that once she got up there, she might get scared and

have a heart attack. She beamed at him with her bright white, dentured smile and said, Honey, Im 87 and half blind. If I die from a heart attack, jumping from an airplane, Ill be on the 11oclock news! Hyped, Helmeted and suited up, ready to step into the plane, the weather shifted suddenly scrapping the flight due to safety regulations. (I suspect perhaps they exaggerated the poor conditions to further dissuade her from attempting such a crazy idea.) Youll have to come back tomorrow, they told us. In all honesty, I also thought she would change her mind, but when we woke in the morning, she was dressed and waiting for us downstairs exuding the excitement like a 4 year old on Christmas morning. Well, Lorine made the jump with everyone on the premises cheering her on. She didnt know it, but she was inspiring the rest of us on the art of aging. I want to be like her when I grow up, a man of 65 exclaimed as he watched her land and whoop out her excited yell. Lorine was awarded a video of her experience and a certificate as the oldest person to jump at that facility. She bubbled like a schoolgirl, thanking us all for giving her the best experience of her life. Now, Im certainly not suggesting everyone run right out and jump from airplanes...but all of us have something weve always longed to accomplish, or someplace weve always dreamed of visiting, or something weve always wanted to learn. What is yours? It doesnt have to be huge. Maybe its piano, guitar or dance lessons, or taking an art or writing class. Maybe its sailing on a cruise or seeing Paris. What will you regret NOT doing when your final moment arrives? Let go of the guilt. Face your fears and do it anyway. You deserve to put yourself on your own list of priorities. Go for it!
