LESSON PLAN I. OBJECTIVES 1. describe the main parts of the circulatory system 2.

infer the function of the circulatory system II. SUBJECT MATTER Unit: People Subtopic: Parts and functions of the circulatory system References: Cruz, J. et. al. (2001). Into the Future: Science and Health 6, pp 2-5. Quezon City: Lexicon Press Villano, H. ( 2007). Cyber Science VI, pp.4-6. Manila: REX PELC: I.1.1 Concepts The circulatory system delivers the materials needed by the body cells to survive. The circulatory system helps in removing the waste materials from the cells. The major parts of the circulatory system are the heart, the blood, and the blood vessels. Materials Manila paper, picture/poster of circulatory system, NCR map, Quezon City map Processes

III. LEARNING EXPERIENCES A. Review 1. What are the different systems found in our body? 2. Can you tell their functions/parts? B. Motivation 1. Have you ever helped your family or friends used a road map to travel in and out of the city? 2. Show a NCR map. Let the pupils describe the map. 3. Ask the following: - How do people travel? - Is every roadway of the same size? - Why do people need to travel into the center of the city? What do people need along the way? 4. Referring to the NCR map, explain that all traffic moves in and out of the city by way of the roadways, and that many of those roadways are one-way streets. Vehicles travel into the center of the city to pick up fuel and groceries, and take them home for use. C. Presentation 1. Let the pupils locate the heart of the city on the map. 2. Explain to students that a city proper, where commercial centers, gasoline stations, supermarkets are located, is often called the heart of the city because it is the center of activity. 3. Present a picture of a circulatory system. 4. Unlock the word circulatory. (You can ask your pupils to circulate around the classroom. Furthermore, you might want to discuss the things that circulate.) 5. Let the pupils observe and identify the main parts of the circulatory system based from the picture/poster. 6. Ask the pupils to describe the parts of the circulatory system. - Heart is a muscular organ located at the middle of the chest with its apex tilted to the left side. (Rectify common misconceptions e.g. heart is located at the left side of the chest.) Blood vessels are tubes that connect the heart to the different body parts. - Blood is a red fluid which is composed of solid and liquid parts. (It might not be evidently seen in some posters of circulatory system.)

D. Discussion 1. Let the pupils compare Quezon City map (use a map that your pupils are familiar with) to the circulatory system. Blood cells (like vehicles) travel one-way paths called veins (roadways) to the heart and lungs, where they drop off waste (like recycling), and pick up oxygen and nutrients (like fuel and food). When the nutrient- and oxygen-rich blood travels back out to the cells (home), it goes by way of another set of one-way paths called arteries (roadways).

2. Briefly discuss the blood and the role it plays in the body.

The blood moves through the cardiovascular system delivering fuel and nutrients to, and removing waste from, every cell in the body. E. Generalization 1. Make a table for the following: - Describe the heart, blood, and blood vessels. - What are the functions of the heart, blood and blood vessels? 2. Let the students infer the function of the circulatory system based from the brief description of the functions of the heart, blood and blood vessels. F. Application 1. How is circulatory system related to digestive, respiratory and excretory system? IV. EVALUATION 1. Give the 3 main parts of the circulatory system. 2. Describe each part and tell its function. 3. What is the function of the circulatory system? V. ASSIGNMENT 1. Do all animals have circulatory systems like humans? 2. What are the parts and function of a human heart?
