Syllabus
The Capstone unit is largely a problem based learning activity that encourages you (as a team member) to apply your business knowledge within a competitive simulated business environment. Your team will be assigned to manage a company operating within an electronic sensor industry. Companies will have to consider what is happening in their industry, why changes take place and make decisions that lead to successful outcomes. Managing the company will require your team to make a wide range of decisions, including:
Which markets to emphasise What types of research and development to conduct What types of marketing techniques to apply to effectively market products How to manage production facilities and a sales force How to contract and implement team roles and responsibilities How to effectively manage information that will support critical decisions How to finance operations

The simulation provides opportunities to practice strategising. It is expected that teams will maximise their full potential by taking advantage of individual team-member strengths. Responsibilities will have to be assigned. An agreement or contract describing the expectations of each team-member must be obtained. As you participate within this dynamic business environment, continuous contributions will be essential because your team performance could vary throughout the simulation. Consequently, individual contributions can and will be tracked to ensure equitable team outcomes.

Decision Deadlines

During the business simulation teams are regularly required to upload their decisions to CapSim, as each Round of the business game progresses. These decisions are used by the simulation software to calculate results and to produce the revised industry report (called the Capstone Courier). Therefore, it is very important that teams upload their decisions before the simulation is calculated. If a team does not upload its decisions before the deadline then their simulation outcomes will be affected. Decision upload and deadlines will be discussed during Modules 02 and 03 when there will be opportunities for teams to complete PRACTICE ROUNDS before the start of the assessed ROUNDS. The following table provides a schedule of dates and times for the decision deadlines. It is a team responsibility to ensure that their decisions are uploaded before a particular deadline. Study Module Module 2 Module 3 Module 4 Module 5 Module 6 Module 7 Module 8 Module 9 Module 10 Module 11 Module 12 Decision Deadline (To be completed by student after discussion with the Tutor)

7.1

Assessment
Summary
To pass this unit you must: receive an overall grade of 5 or above and a mark greater than or equal to 50, and, you must attempt ALL assessed assignments. Item No. 1 2 3 Assessment Activity Simulation Activities Company Presentation Reflections On My Participation (including Journals and Peer Evaluations) Note: There is no examination in this unit. Total Percentage % 60% 20% 20% 100%

The assessments are due as per the Semester Activity Schedule and Decision Deadlines or as given to you by your Class Tutor.

7.2

Assessment Details
A computer based business simulation is used throughout the semester program that requires you to successfully participate as a team member (of a virtual company). Simulation activities continuously develop throughout the program; however there are components of individual assessment within these activities. Item No. 1 Assessment Activity Interactive simulation activities: Preparation Tasks Team Simulation Result Individual Simulation Result Presentation Assessment: Overall Team Company Presentation Individual Contribution in the Presentation Reflections on my participation - Written Paper Total Group assessment % Individual assessment % 10% 25% 25% 10% 10% 20% 65%

35%

Even though the interactive simulation activities attract 60% of unit assessment, individual assessment totals 65%. Therefore, whilst teamwork is properly recognised it does not overpower your potential to achieve excellent individual assessment outcomes.

WARNING: Your Tutor has discretion to reduce marks / give zero marks / fail the student / report the student for disciplinary action, as the case may be, for any of the following: Cheating in any form Collusion with other teams End-gaming Unethical business practices and approaches Plagiarism Poor Peer Evaluations Team Complaints Failing to reasonably contribute / poor contributions towards the teams efforts Failure to take part in team meetings and decisions Failure to complete proper journals and peer evaluations
7.2.1 Interactive Simulation Activities Item 1 60%

Preparation Tasks (10%) Individual assignment task Your Tutor will elaborate on this in your first class. Basically, you will be required to read your Capstone TEAM MEMBER GUIDE (Capstone Student Guide), complete the online Introductory Lesson Quiz, complete the online Manager Guide including the Situation Analysis, complete the one (1) online Rehearsal Tutorial Simulation (Quiz / Decision Results) Round, complete the HR Tutorial Quiz and, complete the TQM Tutorial Quiz. These five tasks are designed to prepare you to play the simulation. (Note: Results for the HR Tutorial Quiz will be available only when the HR module is activated at the start of Competition Round 2, and, results for the TQM Tutorial Quiz will be available at the start of Round 4) Your Tutor will assess the 10% Preparation Tasks assignment at the start of the Module 3 classroom session. ALL FIVE (5) Tasks MUST be completed. Failure to complete ANY of these tasks may result in you losing part or all of the 10% assessment for this Preparation Tasks assignment. You will score based on your performance in these tasks, not just for completing the tasks. Your Tutor will give you details on this.

Simulation Result (25%) Team simulation / group assignment task The team simulation result will be based on the competitive performance of each team. There will be Advanced Modules used for your course. Your Tutor will discuss this with you. Company performance will be calculated using various success measures. Teams choose their success measures themselves in accordance with a few rules which will be explained to you in class, and, teams must submit these success measures by the deadline for Round 3 on the Capsim website. (Note: A presentation will be given on success measures) The final simulation result will be awarded equally to each team member subject to the WARNING above. A maximum of 25% of unit assessment will be awarded. Each generated company score will range between 0 and 6. These scores will be pro-rated to arrive at an assessment percentage, according to the following structure: For a score in the range 1.00 to 6.00; the pro-rated result will be greater than 11% but less than 25% of unit assessment; and For a score in the range 0.00 to 0.99, the pro-rated result will range from 0% up to 11% of unit assessment.
Business Capstone 301 Updated on 01/07/11 by Gerry Shortland-Webb GENERIC VERSION OF UNIT OUTLINE Page 9 of 11

Simulation Result (25%) Individual simulation task The individual simulation result will be based on the competitive performance of each individual. This will be a Four-Round mini simulation operating as a spin-off from the team simulation. Some aspects of this simulation will be different to the team simulation but the same basic concepts will apply. The aim of this simulation is to test the individuals understanding of the simulation in general as well as concepts that should have been learned in the team simulation. It will contain questions (Board Queries) after each Round and a set of Board Queries at the end of the individual simulation. The students score will be based on the outcome of the individual simulation and may be modified to negate the effect of random decisions, plus, the answers to the Board Questions - this will be decided before the start of the individual simulation and will be told to you in class and/or on Blackboard. Each individual simulation will start off exactly the same and diverge from there. Thus it is possible to obtain a fair scoring or ranking of students across the entire Capstone course. The individual simulation will be attempted in the students own time over six (6) days. The exact schedule will be detailed by your class Tutor (also refer to the Semester Activity Schedule on Page 6).

7.2.3

Company Presentation Item 2 20%

The teams will prepare a presentation describing company performance and learning over the course of the simulation. This 15-minute presentation will take place during Module 12. All team members are expected to participate in the presentation. The presentation mark will be split into two parts. The content of the presentation will attract a maximum of 10% of unit assessment and will be awarded equally to team members. Individual presentation performances will attract a maximum of 10% of unit assessment and be awarded individually. Teams MAY be required to assist the Tutor with peer evaluations of other team presentations. Teams will be expected to use their Mission Statement and Strategies documents in the preparation of the presentation. These documents will be discussed by your Tutor in the first few modules.

7.2.4

Reflections on my Participation (Written Paper) Item 3 20%

You are required to complete three (3) Peer Evaluations and two (2) Online Journals as compulsory tasks that will affect the Reflections Paper mark, and, failure to complete these tasks attracts a penalty that will be determined by your Tutor. Furthermore, some of the Reflections Paper marks are for reference to these Peer Evaluations and Online Journals within the body of the Reflections Paper itself. To enable you to record your two (2) personal Online Journal entries you will be allocated a personal journal (using the Blackboard website for Business Capstone 301). This personal journal will only be accessible by you and academic staff and, it will provide a useful source of reflective material when compiling your Reflections Paper. Your journal needs to contain your personal observations about your participation in team activities. In particular, you need to maintain a diary of comments, thoughts and observations that occur to you, and, also include comment on your Peer Evaluation reports. This diary will be date-stamped and kept in your personal journal. Writing your thoughts is not meant to be onerous, and, as a guideline, a maximum of 250 words will need to be submitted for each of the two compulsory journals. Your Tutor will explain what a proper journal entry is. Do not use it as a record of what your company did, rather record your personal feelings. Journal entries that merely record team meetings, decisions or company performance will not be regarded as proper journal entries. You must make a journal entry to be submitted prior to the start of the classroom sessions in MODULES 4 and 7 (or as per the revised deadline set by your Tutor). These journal entry notes will become a valuable resource when summarising your reflections and may also be useful in your Company Presentations. Marks will be deducted from your Reflections Paper mark if proper journal entries are not made. Your Tutor will check the personal Online Journals and if you have not recorded the two (2) required journal entries, your mark for your Reflections Paper will be reduced. Another source of reflective material is the three (3) Peer Evaluations completed by you and your fellow team members. These evaluation exercises will take place between Monday 7.00am and Friday 7.00pm (local time) in the weeks when Modules 03, 06 and 09 are conducted (or as provided by your tutor), with the results posted (to Capsim) after each Peer Evaluation exercise is completed on the relevant Friday at 7.00pm (local time). You will be able to use the results of these Peer Evaluations to support your Online
Business Capstone 301 Updated on 01/07/11 by Gerry Shortland-Webb GENERIC VERSION OF UNIT OUTLINE Page 10 of 11

Journals and your reflections. Failure to record the required Peer Evaluations will result in the rest of your team ending up with an incomplete overall evaluation of their individual effort, and, because of this lack of participation on your part, your mark for your Reflections Paper will be reduced, plus, a further 2-mark individual penalty will be applied to your overall mark for the unit for each Peer Evaluation exercise that is not completed. The intention of the three Peer Evaluations and the two Online Journals is for you to collect useful data that can be used as evidence when you write the assignment paper entitled Reflections on my Participation. This paper will describe your thoughts about your collaboration, contribution and what you need to do to improve your performance as an effective team member. To ensure that your journal provides you with useful data, your Tutor will provide you with a list of headings or questions to use and may also introduce special headings or questions. These headings or questions are suggested to help you think about each heading. However, you are not expected to write something on all headings or questions. Nevertheless, your paper must address each of the used headings and some of the questions. Therefore, make sure that you capture enough thoughts (during the semester) to assist the preparation of your Reflections Paper. There will also be class discussion on preparation for this assessment item. The Reflections Paper will be no more or less than three (3) A4 pages with NO COVER PAGE REQUIRED (using single-spaced line format and the Times New Roman, 12pt font). You will be required to conform to the Reflections Paper marking criteria, which are on Blackboard; therefore these criteria should be read carefully. This assignment will be assessed on an individual basis and will attract a maximum of 20% of the marks for the unit. The Reflections Paper is to be submitted to your Class Tutor by the deadline specified in the Semester Activity Schedule or by your Tutor.

7.3

Assessment Compliance Information

Due dates will be strictly adhered to. Extensions to simulation deadlines are not possible because of the nature of the course. It is your responsibility to check the due date and method of submission. Official release results for this unit are published on Oasis on the Curtin website. https://prodweb3.curtin.edu.au/exrprd/results.search

7.4

Penalty for Late Submission of Assessments

If assignments (Preparation Tasks; Reflections Paper) are not submitted by the due date, a penalty of 10% of the total marks available per day will be deducted from the assessment mark until zero marks remain. It is your responsibility to keep appropriate copies/backups of assignments submitted. Assignments will be checked / scanned for plagiarism or other forms of cheating.

8.

General Information
Please see the CBS Student Passport A-Z Guide (as described on page 1) for important general information.

9.

Supplementary Instructions and Materials

You will participate in an online computer simulation that will be accessible from http://www.capsim.com. Normally, each simulation will have a maximum of 30 students placed into five corporate teams (or, 36 students placed into six teams depending on the delivery location). The simulation is based on a highly competitive electronic sensor industry and provides you with an opportunity to apply your holistic business knowledge and acumen. Preparation for the unit before attending the first class is essential. Therefore it is important that students logon to Blackboard and read the details that are included. Also, click on Unit Resources on the left tab and then click on Simulation Guides, Textbook, weblinks and references and read the Team Member Guide. The Capstone TEAM MEMBER GUIDE is published in English, Chinese (Traditional) and Chinese (Simplified) and is also available online as soon as you register in Capsim. It is also important that students should: - Attend their scheduled first BC301 class of the semester because individual registration into the simulation will be covered during Module 01 - Use ONLY their CURTIN STUDENT EMAIL ADDRESS when communicating with their BC301 Class Tutor or the Unit Coordinator - Check the ANNOUNCEMENTS in Blackboard on a regular basis.
