Ospitato dallo Yacht Club Costa Smeralda questo evento, ormai alla sua terza edizione dopo quelle del 2007 e 2009, ha avuto la presenza di 14 imbarcazioni (12 a vela e due a motore, turqoise e ad lib rispettimanete di 55 e 44 metri) tutte progettate dalla Dubois Naval architects. Frustrante era laggettivo pi udito in banchina durante il primo giorno con la prima regata ufficialmente cancellata due ore dopo lorario previsto a causa della totale mancanza di vento. linatteso cambio di programma non ha, tuttavia, scoraggiato lequipaggio del 40 metri tenaz che ha ravvivato latmosfera lanciando con gigantesche fionde palloni dacqua nel pozzetto del loro sfortunato bersaglio, il ketch di 57,7 metri twizzle, uno dei modelli pi nuovi della flotta Dubois radunata in Costa Smeralda. la seconda regata, nel giorno seguente, doveva cominciare a mezzogiorno con otto barche che partivano ogni tre minuti. il percorso, di 17 miglia, annunciato pochi minuti prima del via, prevedeva un tratto di 5 miglia verso ovest per doppiare la boa della Secca tremonti, poi un bordo di bolina fino allo scoglio del faro dei Monaci. Con una brezza da nord di 7-8 nodi, le condizioni preferite dalle barche leggere, molti scommettevano sul 39 metri da 185 tonnellate Ganesha, il vincitore della Dubois Cup del 2009, lunica imbarcazione ad aver partecipato a tutte e tre le edizioni. Ma unimportante decisione tattica di Phil Wade, lo skipper del ketch

light-heartedness and camaraderie, the Dubois Cup 2011 superyacht regatta took place in Porto Cervo, Sardinia from June 4-6. Hosted by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, this event, now in its third edition following that of 2007 and 2009, welcomed the presence on the quayside of 14 boats (12 sailers and 2 motorboats, Turquoise and Ad Lib of 55

and 44 metres respectively), all designed by Dubois Naval Architects. Frustrating was the term most frequently heard on the dockside to describe Day One with the first regatta formally cancelled two hours after the scheduled start time for an almost complete lack of wind. An unexpected turn of events, it did not, however,

damper the spirits of the crew of 40-metre Tenaz, who livened up the lull by catapulting water balloons with giant slingshots onto the cockpit of their unlucky target - Twizzle, the 57.5-metre ketch and one of the newer models in the Dubois fleet. Race Two on the following day began on schedule at midday with eight boats

setting off in the pursuit event in three-minute intervals. The 17-nautical-mile course, announced just minutes before the start, was a five-mile westward reach to the Secca di Tre Monti beacon on the first leg, then upwind to the rocky outcrop of the Monaci Lighthouse. With a seven- to eight-knot northerly breeze, the

conditions favoured the lighter boats and many placed their bets on the 39-metre 185-tonne Ganesha, the 2009 Dubois Cup winner, and the only boat to have participated in all three editions. But an important tactical decision by Phil Wade, the captain of the 310-tonne 44.8-metre ketch Timoneer made all the difference, clinching their victory.

While the rest of the fleet stood well out to sea as the wind died down, Timoneer gybed and took an inshore southerly course. We were lucky after the windward mark, Wade admits. "We gybed and came inshore as the wind shifted in our favour. Second place position went to the 30-metre Nostromo, second to start

and very responsive to the wind shifts, and third to Zefira, the 49.7-metre fast cruising sloop and the boat with the best start of the fleet. Ganesha received a five-minute penalty for crossing the start line early and finished in fourth place. The three-day event concluded with a prize-giving dinner at the Yacht Club

timoneer (44,8 metri, 310 tonnellate) ha fatto la differenza consentendogli di conquistare la vittoria. Socialmente utile due volte quindi. Ma il vero successo della Dubois Cup di questanno, analogamente a quelle del passato, va attribuito alle splendide barche. Come spiega Michael Ryan, armatore di tenaz. io sono un sostenitore delle cose che mantengono a lungo il loro valore. fantastico possedere qualcosa di primordine che per non scimmiotta le ultime tendenze. Se avete osservato le barche di Dubois nel corso degli anni avrete constatato che hanno mantenuto la loro eleganza e le loro qualit; la gente le rispetta per il loro valore intrinseco. lottuagenaria di ferro la signora Gosnell, armatrice americana di timoneer, la barca vincente, concorda soddisfatta: il mio Dubois la pi bella e perfetta barca del mondo!.

Costa Smeralda and a very personable presentation by Ed Dubois, founder and CEO of Dubois Naval Architects, who has made this edition of the Cup remarkable for two reasons. Most importantly, the event was a platform for gaining support for the Dubois Child Cancer Fund, a charity founded following the diagnosis of Dubois'

daughter Minna with neuroblastoma, a rare childhood cancer affecting nerve tissues. In addition, the Dubois Cup 2011 is the first superyacht regatta to offset the event's carbon emissions. It has managed to do so, thanks to its collaboration with Yacht Carbon Offset, by achieving equivalent emissions reductions through independently

controlled green energy projects. But the real success of this year's Dubois Cup, as well as that of the past editions, should be credited to the gorgeous boats themselves. As Michael Ryan, Tenaz's owner, explains, I am a big fan of things with long-term value. It's great to have something cutting-edge but you don't want to be

super-trendy. And if you have looked at the Dubois boats over the years, they've maintained their elegance, their quality, and people respect them for their intrinsic value. Eighty-something Ms. Gosnell, the American owner of winning boat Timoneer, wholeheartedly concurs: My Dubois is just the most beautiful, perfect boat in the world!"
