Setting up the Yamaha S80 for a Performance:

The S80 has three modes: performance, master keyboard, and voice. The performance mode is used when you wish to use the keyboard to play up to sixteen instruments simultaneously, usually with a computer sequencer. The voice mode is used when you wish to play the keyboard as a solo instrument. The master keyboard mode is used when using the keyboard to control external MIDI devices. Performance Mode Press the performance button. The S80 stores performances in 8 banks (A-H) of 16 (1-16), also numbered 1-128. Select a performance to edit by pushing a letter button followed by a number button. Now press the edit button. This puts the keyboard into edit mode. Now hold the shift key and turn the page knob one click while continuing to hold the shift button. You should see COM: GEN QED ARP CTL MEQ EFF on the first line and PART:MIX TON LYR RCV on the second line. The edit mode has two sections, common (com) and Part. By holding the shift button and turning the page knob you will see the cursor move through the two lines. Each 3-letter symbol represents an abbreviation. ARP represents arpeggiator, for example. Scroll the cursor to MIX. You should see Part01 at the start of the second line. Each of the sixteen parts can be accessed by pressing the number buttons on the right side of the keyboard. Press the number buttons and you will see the Part01 change to part 04 or whatever number button you pressed. Each part represents an instrument in your sixteen member orchestra. Now press the 1 button so we can edit part 01. You will notice the voice associated with the part on the remainder of the second line in the window. The S80 has two preset memories which can be used but not changed, and an internal memory which can be used and edited, if you wish. Turn the B button so it reads PRE1 in the window. You have selected preset memory 1 and can now roam through the voices stored in this memory by turning the C knob or by pressing the increment/decrement buttons. You can turn the 1 button to select an instrumental group, such as guitars (GT), organs (OR), or strings (ST). Knob 2 allows you to select instruments within an instrumental grouping. Audition voices as you select them by playing on the keyboard. Try the modulation wheel and the pitch bend. Once you have set the voices for each part you are ready to roll.

Name your Performance. Hold the shift key and turn the page knob one click. While holding the shift key, turn the Page knob counter-clockwise until the GEN is underlined. Use knob 2 to move the blinking cursor and the DATA knob to scroll through the letters of the alphabet. Store your performance. Press STORE. Use knob 2 to move to the memory location you wish to use for storing the new performance. Press ENTER to confirm your choice. Press YES to complete the store.
