Oppenheim A415 Chemistry 860-486-3215 keith.oppenheim@uconn.edu Office Hours: Office hours are from 1pm 2pm Monday - Thursday and most days outside if class time, except between 2 3pm Monday and Wednesday and 10 11am Fridays. You can try your luck by stopping by, or let me know youre coming by ahead of time via email and I will be happy to see you. Texts: Introductory Chemistry, Tro, Prentice-Hall 2nd or 3rd Edition. IBSN-10: 0-13-149513-5 or 0-13-603586-8 Signature Lab Series - CHEM 1122 Other Equipment: Calculator capable of scientific notation (learn how to use scientific notation) Approved safety goggles for laboratory (can be purchased from the Chem building the 1st week of the semester or from the UCONN COOP. They must be splash guard goggles; I know they are not fashionable.

Grading: The course grades will be based on the following components: Plan 1 Plan 2 Exam I 15% 10% Exam II 15% 10% Exam III 15% 10% Final Exam 20% 35% Discussion (Quizzes, Participation, 10% 10% Homework) Laboratory (Quizzes, Participation, Post 25% 25% Labs) TOTAL 100% 100% As you will be evaluated and graded on an individual basis, you will be expected to hand in only your own work. See the section on academic honesty taken from the Student Code of Conduct and reproduced later in this document. Homework, Exams and Quizzes: Homework is due in your Discussion the week after it is assigned. Points for homework will be based on a total of 5. 5 points will be awarded for working every problem assigned. 2 points for attempting some, but not all, of the homework. 0 points for no homework, this includes late, missing, dog ate it, computer crashed, etc. Bonus Questions are to be turned into ME the week after it is assigned by 5pm Wednesday. Point values will depend upon the complexity of the question and how many right answers are received. DO NOT GIVE TO YOUR TA OR THEY WILL NOT BE GRADED! Exams will be taken in class. This will give you 50 minutes to complete the exam. If you have medical reasons to require more time please get documentation BEFORE the exam.

If you have a VALID REASON- illness or death in the family with documentation, or University sanctioned event, you must contact ME BEFORE the exam by phone or in person. Email may be used, but I must reply or it will be assumed I did not receive the email. Make-up exams will be provided on a case by case basis. Quizzes will be taken in Discussion. Some may be announced, some may be of the pop variety. There will be homework and lab quizzes throughout the semester. Husky CT: A discussion board and other resources will be available to you through HuskyCT, which can be accessed using your UConn NetID. If you have not been issued a UConn NetID, please see the Help Desk on the ground floor of the Mathematics-Physics building. Homework, Exams and Power Point lectures will all be posted on Husky CT. Power Point Presentations, Practice Exams and other materials will also be posted online. Assuring Success: KEEP UP WITH COURSE MATERIAL- the reading material, laboratory material, and especially working the problems. Ask questions as they arise to either your TA or me, dont get behind in your understanding because it is VERY hard to catch back up. This class is fast paced and quite a bit of work will be necessary for your success. All of us are available to help, but the ultimate responsibility for your success is yourself.
