12 Piano notes made visible for the first time

Shannon Novak, a New Zealand-born fine art ist , commissioned us t o image 12 piano not es as inspirat ion for a series of 12 musical canvases. We decided t o image t he not es in video mode because when we observed t he 'A1' not e we discovered, surprisingly, t hat t he energy envelope changes over t ime as t he st ring's harmonics mix in t he piano's wooden bridge. Inst ead of t he envelope being fairly st able, as we had imagined, t he harmonics act ually cause t he CymaGlyphs t o be wonderfully dynamic. Our ears can easily det ect t he changes in t he harmonics and t he CymaScope now reveals t hem--probably a first in acoust ic physics. Capt uring t he dynamics was only possible wit h HD video but t aming t he dynamics of t he piano's first st rike, followed by t he short plat eau and long decay phase, was t ricky. We achieved t he result wit h t he help of a professional audio compressor operat ing in real t ime.

Shannon was delight ed wit h t he result s. He comment ed:

"I have always been fascinated with the translation of that which is invisible, into something visible that individuals can relate to, in particular, the representation of sound

through colour and geometric form. I saw the use of cymatic technology as one method of such representation and a unique and compelling way of educating individuals about the link between sound, colour, and geometric form".

Piano notes made visible on the CymaScope

For t he first t ime in hist ory individual piano not es have been made visible using t he CymaScope inst rument . The piano not es were painst akingly recorded by Evy King and t hen fed int o t he CymaScope one by one and t he result s recorded in high definit ion video.

Music, in t he abso lut e sense, is t he invisible geomet ry of t he cosmos, a delicat e t racery of frequencies t hat harmonise wit h each ot her and from which all mat t er manifest s. The conduct or of t his sublime symphony is t he Creat ive Force of t he cosmos, some people prefer t o say: God. Music, as sensed by humans, is a delicat e t racery of audible frequencies t hat harmonise wit h each ot her and generally please our emot ions.

What is not commonly known is t hat music has t he almost magical power t o creat e form from formlessness. If t he reader doubt s t his, click t he arrow below t o view wat er under t he influence of music, revealing t he invisible geomet ry of music. MMV t echno lo gy is st ill under develo pment but as t his excerpt fro m Pink Flo yd's "Welco me t o t he Machine" sho ws, an excit ing fut ure lies ahead when all music can be t ranscribed t o MusicMadeVisible.

musicmadevisible is

a new concept in musical expression, a st ream of cymat ic images represent ing an analog of music in visual form. If our eyes could see music we would not see waves, as is commonly believed, but beaut iful holographic bubbles, wit h shimmering kaleidoscopic pat t erns on t heir surface. The CymaScope allows us t o see t his previously hidden realm of beaut y.

The Cymascope is an musicmadevisible instrument that makes images can be thought of as sound or music visible, analogs of music because the creating detailed 3D geometry they contain is a If our eyes could see music they would impressions of sound or mathematical correlate of the be bathed in scintillating kaleidoscope- music vibrations. Here musical pitches and intervals like patterns the rapidly expanding that caused the pattern to sphere is captured in a form on the Cymascope frozen moment. The membrane. interior reveals a beautiful and complex structure representing the rich harmonic nature of violin music. Almost all audible sounds are bubblelike in nature, not wave-like as is commonly believed.
