Downhole Instrumentation (DHI)

Complementing NOVs surface solutions is a portfolio of Downhole Instrumentation products for both straight-hole and directional markets. Key advancements in this area include the introduction of NOVs time saving e-Totco EDR, which serves as an electronic equivalent to the traditional mechanical drift tool that helped to launch Technical Oil Tool Company in 1928. As a pioneer in downhole electromagnetic (EM) communications for Measurement While Drilling (MWD) tools, NOV serves independent directional drillers with both sales and rental business models via its BlackStar EM MWD group. The EM advantage is realized in drilling situations requiring speedy downhole survey data and in situations where aerated or contaminated mud systems make traditional mud pulsed communications problematic. NOV can offer a partnership and a unique range of services to the industry, especially for high technology environments; electronics packaged to withstand conditions of extreme temperatures, high shock and vibration for specialized markets.

NOV has manufacturing centers in Europe as well as the US to make service a priority worldwide. NOV also provides product training, calibration of customer equipment, software development, engineering, testing, and product qualification services for its customers. NOVs DHI group designs and manufactures steering tools, survey tools (single and multishot), and downhole sensors which provide accurate and reliable information on inclination, azimuth, pressure, temperature, and weight on bit, as well as recently added directional sensors for MWD, Wireline, and Rotary Steerable applications. Such information is critical in directional drilling. Measurement While Drilling (MWD)
National Oilwell Varco is a world leader in downhole tools, services, and technology. Our state-of-the-art BlackStar EM MWD system sets the standard for downhole data acquisition. Combining the latest in EM technology with the most durable and efficient design on the market, BlackStar provides you with a cost effective solution for EM MWD applications.

BlackStar EM MWD Tools

MWD applications involve the sending of measurements made by instruments located at the bottom of the hole back to the surface to allow the crew to understand such things as the location and orientation of the drill bit. Traditional MWD systems transmit information to the surface by sending pressure pulses through the drilling fluids or wire transmission. EM systems send information to the surface through the earths crust utilizing low frequency electromagnetic waves. Information is received at a surface antenna, decoded, and then processed by a computer and distributed to the drillers readout display without the encumbrance of mud or wire

Every BlackStar kit is packed and transported in durable and waterproof cases. Features The BlackStar EM MWD offers many key advantages over more traditional MWD systems. Some of these include: Key data points, including: Magnetic/gravity tool faces. Near-bit inclination. Azimuth. High side gamma. Low side gamma. Total gamma (directional and 360). Annulus pressure. Vibration. Downhole revolutions per minute (RPM). Variety of fluid conditions, such as: Aerated mud. While pumping lost circulation material. Configurable to meet local field conditions. Variable data transmission speeds. Separate steering and survey frames. Compact and battery powered. Electronic design eliminates mechanical parts. Does not require pump pressure. Data output in standard Wellsite Information Transfer Standard format. Can be used with a variety of tubular sizes.

BlackStar Dynamic Rotational Gamma (DRG)
The NOV BlackStar DRG provides the ability to make an accurate measurement of the natural radioactivity emitting from either the high side and the low side of the well bore while drilling. The DRG technology will allow the driller to make more rapid determination of the approaching bed boundary changes and make corrections to adjust his drilling program to stay within the desired zone, thus providing an improved method of geo-steering by adding the ability to record oriented gamma measurements while the drill string is rotating.

BlackStarConnect
NOVs BlackStarConnect integrated with RigSense can allow detection of directional drilling operations remotely. Utilize our RigSense EDR system through a WITS connection to add the accessibility of remote operations for your directional tools. Through the satellite feed, you can make up-to-thesecond changes on your directional tool parameters. You can access the data with NOVs WellData Real-Time website. This offers the flexibility to make changes, monitor status, and troubleshoot operations from a remote location.

WellData integrated with BlackStarConnect can monitor the directional tools progress from spud to total depth. Features Allow the expertise of a directional driller to monitor five or more rigs at a time from a remote location to decrease operating costs Troubleshoot real-time to the rig with any rig interference data disturbing your directional tools Adjust the well plans real-time and no longer have costly rig shutdowns to make corrective actions With the use of the BlackStar DRG, stay in a formation for as long as possible to increase rig production

The gamma ray detection will graph the hi-side and lo-side gamma to further evaluate well plan formation changes

With a WITS feed directional tool, information will now be placed on the RigSense EDR screen to monitor with all other drilling parameters. c o r p o r a t e m a r k e t i n g @ n o v. c o m

BlackStar Wireline Steering Tool

The BlackStar Wireline Steering Tool is made up of a Directional Digital Measurement Unit (DMU) with a steering module acting as a modem to communicate by electric wireline to the surface system at a data transmission rate of 1200 baud. The system offers many advantages for real-time borehole measurements for a variety of drilling applications including under balanced, short radius, slimhole, and air drilling. The Steering Tool system is made up of the following: Downhole steering tool directional probe, with optional gamma and pressure sensors. 1 " OD downhole running gear with centralization. Surface wireline power supply and computer. Rig floor display unit. Downhole Gamma Module The addition of a Natural Gamma Module provides directional drillers with timely gamma log information to allow real-time formation correlation and target identification for tighter well placement. The Gamma Module will accurately chart shale bed stratification, enabling offset well correlations for better depth control and safer drilling practices within difficult geological environments. Gamma logging provides bed correlation in both field appraisal and development drilling to aid with casing point and core point selection. Downhole Pressure Probe While drilling pressure and vibration measurements provide the necessary information for overall motor/bit/ROP performance improvement, as well as hydraulics optimization for under balanced drilling applications. The addition of wellbore and annulus pressure sensors to the steering tool suite offers significant operational flexibility and efficiency benefits, particularly in wells with potential problems as lost circulation, formation fluid influx, hole collapse, differential sticking and poor hole cleaning (cuttings build up). The modular 1" sonde instrument couples directly to the Steering Tool assembly (directional + gamma) sensor suite and locks into the Oriented Pressure Sub Assembly. Real-time annular and drill pipe pressure measurements. Axial and lateral shock/vibration sensors outputting time averaged peak values. Choice of further transducer ratings dependent on customer accuracy and pressure requirements are available. Surface System A compact surface wireline power supply and interface provides power to the Wireline Steering Tool and connects to the serial port on an Windows compatible PC. The PC receives continuous real-time data updates from the downhole instrument via the surface Interface Unit (IFU) and calculates angular data of the borehole. The surface software then provides service functions and transmits data to the RFD unit.
