Oracle's Optimized Solution for WebCenter 11g

Introduction
Enterprise 2.0-enabled Web portals provide a way for organizations to achieve their goals of improving collaboration and communication, increasing employee productivity, and promoting business agility. But any information submitted to an unsecure Web site is at risk. In addition to making information available and easily shared, businesses need to secure their online data by incorporating the use of Secure Socket Layer (SSL) certificates to encrypt and protect sensitive information. The Oracle Optimized Solution for WebCenter provides a complete, secure applications-todisk Web portal reference architecture that combines highly scalable servers and leading-edge storage and networking technologies with best-of-breed software from Oracle. With Oracle WebCenter 11g, users can personalize the corporate intranet to their needs, participate in dynamic online communities, share information, and easily update content without lengthy and cumbersome IT processes. Access via a Web browser from any connected device, including desktops and mobile devices, can be customized based upon assigned roles, helping users find relevant information and applications more easily. New applications can be deployed more quickly, helping enterprises respond to changing business priorities. This tested and proven architecture features an optimized hardware infrastructureincluding Oracle's newest SPARC T3-1 and T3-2 servers and Sun ZFS Storage Appliancesthat provides leading performance, reliability, and security. The SPARC T3 servers with chipmultithreading (CMT) SPARC T3 processors are targeted at throughput-intensive applications and equipped with built-in hardware cryptographic units to simplify and accelerate cryptography operations. Each SPARC T3 processor contains 16 cores with 8 threads per core (128 threads/processor), providing the dual-processor SPARC T3-2 server with a total of 256 threads for high scalability and virtualization performance. Each processor also contains 16 onchip cryptography accelerators for higher performance data encryption and lower cost and complexity. Dual on-chip 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10 GbE) and dual PCI Express (PCIe) interfaces provide higher bandwidth and very low network latency, critical for WebCenter 11g applications. Using a fully tested and integrated architecture from a single vendor can help eliminate misconfiguration errors, speeding deployment and reducing expenses. Plus, Oracle is the only vendor to provide full-stack management with Oracle Enterprise Manager Ops

Architecture
Oracle's optimized solution for Web Center 11g combines key components in computing, storage, networking, and software into a complete and integrated platform. This architecture, which encompasses all needed components from the underlying hardware to the portal software, provides a flexible and adaptable implementation of highly available and scalable enterprise collaboration initiatives, delivered through a Web-based portal interface. A traditional three-tier architecture is employed by the Oracle Optimized Solution for Web Center (Figure 1). The Web tier contains multiple Web servers and a load balancer to distribute user requests across the multiple servers. The load balancer presents a single point of entry to the cluster using a virtual IP address (VIP), masking the actual servers from users. The middle tier contains the WebCenter 11g middleware servers, the Universal Content Manager, and Oracle Identity Directory. The Database tier in this solution includes Oracle Database 11g with Real Application Clusters (RAC). The architecture is flexible and scalable, as multiple servers can be added to each tier to address changing business requirements.

LOAD BALANCER

When choosing systems for Oracle WebCenter 11g deployments, organizations have a choice of servers. The reference architecture in this study uses two SPARC T3-2 servers, each with two SPARC T3 processors. Alternatively, servers such as the SPARC T3-1 and T3-4 servers, with one and four SPARC T3 processors respectively, or Oracle's Sun Fire X4170 M2 server with up to two Intel Xeon Processor 5600 Series can be used. Smaller configurations can provision both the Web tier and the middle tier components on the same system. Similarly, a single system can be used to provision both the Universal Content Management and Database server. Larger configurations with greater processing demands are better served with a dedicated system for each logical component. Enterprise-level configurations are typically configured with dual systems in a clustered environment, to provide greater performance and reliability.

Oracle's Optimized Solution for WebCenter 11g

The flexible and modular architecture of Oracle's optimized solution for Oracle WebCenter 11g allows organizations to start small and grow as needed to meet changing business priorities. Virtualization technologies built into Oracle Solaris and Oracle VM server virtualization software make it easy to quickly create new virtual environments and provision new servers to meet changing workload demands.

Performance Characterization
In order to demonstrate performance, scalability, and resource usage, two tests were run against Oracle's optimized solution for WebCenter 11g architecture. The first test, a Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) performance test, is a basic raw performance test measuring maximum SSL-operations processing capacity. The second test, a use case test, distributes a workload of emulated users to the WebCenter 11g architecture to determine its processing capacity. These tests are run on different architectural platforms to demonstrate the versatility of the WebCenter 11g solution, which offers a choice of servers. WebCenter 11g offers the flexibility to operate, and is certified, in an x86/Oracle Enterprise Linux (OEL) or a SPARC/Oracle Solaris environment. Both environments offer great performance and scalability, and each have their advantages. The SSL performance test, run on a SPARC T3-1 platform, focuses on WebCenter 11g encryption performance. This platform was chosen for the SSL test to evaluate the built-in cryptographic accelerators of the SPARC T3 processor architecture. The use case performance test, run on an x86 platform in this study, demonstrates the scalability of the architecture when loading the number of users and considers CPU, memory, and network performance. This use case demonstrates that the x86 platform can perform equally as well in the same test environment with up to 2,000 users hitting the WebCenter 11g application test bed at one time. The following sections describes the test environment and presents the results gathered from this testing of Oracle's optimized solution for WebCenter 11g.

SSL Performance Test

Two SPARC T3-2 servers, each containing two SPARC T3 processors, were used for the SSL performance test. Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) is a standard for Web security and is used to encrypt and protect information transmitted over the Web via the HTTP protocol. An SSL certificate is an electronic file that uniquely identifies users and Web sites, and enables encrypted communications. The speed of processing SSL certificates is critical for secure Web portal applications such as Oracle WebCenter 11g, and this test measures the performance of the cryptographic algorithms used by the SPARC T3 processors. This test uses the openssl speed command to test the performance of cryptographic algorithms. Specifying an engine (by its unique id string pkcs11) causes the speed command to obtain a functional reference to the specified T3 cryptographic acceleration engine. OpenSSL, an open source implementation of the SSL v2/v3 and Transport Layer Security (TLS v1) network protocol, is deployed in the embedded system powered by UltraSPRAC T3 processors. The SPARC T3 processor

10

Oracle's Optimized Solution for WebCenter 11g

provides Ethernet connectivity, multitasking, and support for the OpenSSL library. Key cipher functions used in SSL connections include RSA-2048 and RSA-1024 public key cryptography, which are accelerated in hardware. Results from this performance test are included in Table 4. As these results show, the SPARC T3 processor in the Sun SPARC T3-2 server demonstrated almost 10 times the performance of the Intel Xeon 5500-series processor.
Table 4 SSL RSA1024 Signing performance

PROCESSOR

PERFORMANCE (SIGNING OPERATIONS/SECOND)

SPARC T3 Intel Xeon 5500-series

157,986.8 16,749.6

The speed of processing SSL certificates varies across platforms, with hardware acceleration leading the way. Oracle WebCenter 11g has SSL processing capabilities built in, but when complemented with the SPARC T3 processors, the operation is expediently faster. The SPARC T3 processor has 16 processor cores with a dedicated Stream Processing Unit on each core for cryptographic acceleration, a unique architecture that is designed to simplify and accelerate cryptographic operations. The SPARC T3 processor's high performance on SSL operations can help improve overall Oracle WebCenter 11g performance, increasing the number of supported users while keeping response times low, and uses less system resources than other leading x86 CPU technologies.

Use Case Test

Figure 3 contains a logical representation of the test environment employed for the use case testing.

Two separate instances of the WebCenter 11g Web tier components and two instances of the WebCenter 11g middleware components are configured. In addition, two instances of Oracle Database 11g, one instance of the Oracle Universal Content Manager software, and one instance of the Oracle Identity Directory are deployed. The HP LoadRunner software is used to generate and manage the test workload. Four instances of the workload agent generate the load for the test environment. The Brocade ServerIron ADX 1000 switch is configured with router code to allow the switch to distribute the workload from the HP LoadRunner workload agents across the multiple Web server instances.

Use Case Test Environment

Figure 4 Test environment

One Sun Blade 6000 chassis is configured with six Sun Blade X6270 server modules (blades) and four Sun Blade X6250 M2 server modules (see Figure 4). These blades are used to run Oracle WebCenter 11g, Oracle Database 11g, and load generation software.

WebCenter 11g: Four Sun Blade X6270 M2 server modules are used to run Oracle WebCenter 11g. These server modules are configured with two 8-core Intel Xeon processors and 48 GB memory and run Oracle Enterprise Linux 5 Update 4. Two are used to run the WebCenter 11g Web tier components, and two are used to run the WebCenter 11g middle (application) tier components. In addition, one of the blades running the Web tier components also runs the Universal Content Management software. Database: Two Sun Blade X6270 M2 server modules are configured with two 8-core Intel Xeon processors and 48 GB memory. Both run Oracle Enterprise Linux 5 Update 4 and are configured with one instance each of Oracle Database 11g RAC. Load Generation: The four Sun Blade X6250 server modules are configured with one Intel Xeon processor and 2 GB RAM and run the Windows XP operating system with Service Pack 3. These four Sun Blade X6250 server modules are used to run the HP LoadRunner software to generate the test workload.

A separate Sun Fire X4170 M2 server is used to run the Oracle Identity Directory in this test environment, although it is possible to provision a Sun Blade 6000 server module or other server for this purpose instead. The Sun ZFS Storage 7420 appliance is used to store the Oracle Database 11g files. In this solution, all database files are transferred using the NFS v3 data protocol. The Sun Blade 6000 Switched NEM 24p 10GbE is used for communication in the test environment. This 24-port switch provides 10 GbE communication to each server module and includes fourteen 10 GbE uplinks. The SPARC T3-2 servers, the Sun ZFS Storage 7420 appliance, and the Brocade ServerIron ADX load-balancing switch also connect via 10 GbE.

13

Oracle's Optimized Solution for WebCenter 11g

The ServerIron ADX 1000 switch provides a front end to the Oracle WebCluster 11g cluster using a virtual IP (VIP) address. The VIP, which provides a single point of entry to the cluster, masks the actual servers from the users and performs load balancing of incoming users and session persistence. The ADX 1000 also provides connectivity between the 1 GbE network and the 10 GbE network.
Use Case Test Workload and Results

Use case testing was performed to demonstrate the scalability of the Oracle WebCenter 11g architecture. WebCenter 11g deployments will experience heavy read workloads; therefore the workload mix consisted of performing approximately 85 percent reads and executing 15 percent writes. Since user login operation is the most expensive operation in terms of resource utilization, a workload of users performing login operations was used to stress the scalability of this solution. The workload consists of an escalating numbers of users logging in over a predetermined time and was emulated using HP LoadRunner software, a distributed load generation engine run on the Sun Blade X6250 server modules. Oracle Database 11g with RAC with two nodes was used as the database. Although Oracle RAC technology can provide scalability, it was mainly used to provide high availability in this study as the nature of the test workload did not impose a heavy load to the database. When a user logs in for the first time in any given session, the user is authenticated with Oracle Identify Directory (an LDAP-compliant directory service). The Web server works with the middleware and database servers to retrieve all user login information and builds the custom user home. There are no delays between user logins; that is, no think time. For the purposes of this test, a login is considered complete when the anonymous pages have been retrieved, the user/password has been sent, and the user has navigated to a specific page. Figure 5 contains a screen shot of results from the use case testing, as reported by the HP LoadRunner software. These results are impressive, with over 25,000 hits per second sustained during the testing as the number of users was increased. Transaction response time remains acceptable throughout the test, with user response times remaining under 0.06 seconds. In addition, the ADX 1000 switch ran at a maximum of 11% capacity during testing with 2,000 users.
