Ducted propellers are ideally suited to STOL airplanes utilizing high-lift boundary-layer control. Problems include preventing separation on the inlet of the duct and matching the propeller-pitch distribution to the inflow velocity profile at the propeller plane. An STOL pusher derives the additional benefit of low drag, which is possible since the turbulent propeller slipstream does not impinge on large wetted areas of the aircraft.
