ABSTRACT

Contamination of surfaces can happen while dealing with radioactive materials, extent of contamination depends upon time duration of exposure to radiations and nature of the surface contaminated. The aim of this experiment is to decontamination tendency of different material surfaces like glass, plastic, aluminum, iron, painted wood and raw or unfurnished wood using different cleaning reagents such as soap solution, citric acid, EDTA solution, dilute sodium hydroxide solution, dilute nitric acid solution and dilute sulfuric acid. These surfaces were first contaminated one after the other with Sodium per Tachnetate, which was in solution form and then Surface was cleaned using reagent soaked tissue paper first and afterwards wet surface was cleaned by using a rough bloating paper and radioactive contamination on the surface was then determined using GM detector. Decontamination procedure was continued using different reagents one after another until level of contamination was found close or approximately three times of background count rate. Radiation count rate after using each reagent were noted and decontamination factor for every reagent was calculated, results for each surface are presented in the form of histograms.
