THROUGH LIGHTNING TO STARS -Aparna Raj C , I MBA-M

There was a time when man waited patiently, for the distance was long and dreary A time when meeting a kith or kin was something unfathomable Days when sky was the extreme Little did Coulomb know that his concept of charge would change the world, form branches of Engineering for its own and vicariously explain the lucid explanation of Franklins Key Experiment years later!! Heard of galvanometers? Obviously yes!! That is supposed to be High School Physics!! The device got its name from the great Italian Physicist Luigi Galvani who conducted the famous Frog Leg experiment and discovered that electric current made dead frogs legs to twitch as if alive. Oersted discovered the most prominent, yet, strangest phenomenon that Nature exhibited- Electromagnetism. Ampere with his simple, but, beautifully formulated Algebra, Gauss with his theorems, Ohm and Faraday with their well-developed laws, changed the World and took it to levels incomprehensible. Thus, the era started In sequence, through accidents, current, voltage, electricity and Electronics was established as unavoidable factors of human life. Electronics might be a new word, not having much ancestry for itself. It was its parent that in fact nurtured the child to change the face of the Globe as it is today Electrical Engineering. But the transition was not as fast as the rate at which technology is changing today. Until the early 1990s, the most sophisticated electronic device that man held in his hand was the plain Calculator!! Taking leads from the computers as instruments which could simplify the complicated computation, the scientists set to work. Towards the end of the 20th Century AD, the Electronic Era started seeing the best fruits of its time. From calculators, the scenery moved away to the CRT monitors and the PCs. What is used today is even more compact and portable. From laptops to the latest Sixth Sense of Pranav Mistry, Electronics has conquered the world of Computers Transportation has become a matter of luxury now-adays. Apart from travelling from the source to destination, travelers now tend to search for comfort over convenience. This is a fact explained by the trendy fashion and models that have captured Automobile industry. Electronics merged with the forces of Mechanics to form a new branch of charges in action with gears Mechatronics.

Analog systems on copters and planes paved way for highly mechanized, swift and precise digital controls. RADAR, the mighty ranger from World War is now the control unit of any Aviation industry. With ATCs on the ground, Engineers control the movements in the skies over any country. Auto- pilot, a reality is all for the E- Era to be proud of.

Mr. Watsoncome here- I want to see you! called out Alexander Graham Bell to his assistant Thomas Watson over his first telephone. Little did he know then that one day in the fast and furious future, his invention would become thin, lean and just a few centimeters long with almost anything possible! The secrets of matter at speeds of light were unleashed. Not one but numerous waves existed in the air that, communicating with the far and unseen lands was just a routine job. Broadcasting with radio waves came with the creation of circuits; a break through being given by the super heterodyne receivers. TV came and telecasting started a visual and audible treat for generations to come! Sky is never the limit Heavens have been touched From the sands, the metal was found, the metal so elusive that the planet was coated with it Silicon. Scales changed from visible to invisible with integration now being at nano levels. Building heavier and difficult instruments became easy. Man used his ultimate skills for mastering the art of sending rockets, animals and then himself to heights which were once fictional There is more news International Space Station to be functional by late this year will become the largest artificial satellite serving as a microgravity research lab!

There are many more duties for Electronics and Technology to complete before it can consider itself desolate An Era which changed and is changing the Earth May be it is wondering about itself like Robert Frost: But I have promises to keep, And miles to go before I sleep, And miles to go before I sleep.

Technology makes everything easier and faster. In fact, it makes it possible to commit malpractice at warp speed.

PRIVACY IN THE ELECTRONIC ERA??? -Suptha Subhas 1MBA M

The vision of the 21st Century is realized through the convergence of electronic, mobile, television, voice and silent commerce applications. The ubiquity, universality, uniqueness and unison of the electronic era will provide two principal benefits : increased convenience as well as more personalized and customized services. However, this will also bring emerging issues such as a greater degree of privacy concerns that will impact the society.

When you decided to join for an MBA course you casually searched the web to find a good comparison In the next day or two, you may be surprised to find a lot of B school information coming up in your e-mail, or in the advertising you see on other websites. And you think, well, thats quite a coincidence. It couldnt be that anyone knows I was looking for B schools, could it? Unfortunately, its no coincidence. Privacy advocates say our personal information is being captured and stored by search engines, social networks, and mobile browsers and then shared with marketers. Most of this is perfectly legal but not widely understood by users. Technology and innovation have a hard time flourishing in a restrictive atmosphere Today you have more reason than ever to care about the privacy of your medical information. Intimate details you revealed in confidence to your doctor were once stored in locked file cabinets and on dusty shelves in the medical records department. Now, sensitive information about your physical and mental health will almost certainly end up in data files. Your records may be seen by hundreds of strangers who work in health care, the insurance industry, and a host of businesses associated with medical organizations. Whats worse, your private medical information is now a valuable commodity for marketers who want to sell you something. Privacy is not simply a private matter, it is a matter of commercial fidelity. It is cheaper for a company to steal a march on a competitor by stealing their secrets than it is to carry out some hard work In a free society we are all vulnerable, that is the price we pay for our freedom. It is all too easy for crime, drug trafficking, money laundering, terrorism.

GURU OF THE MONTH

Mr.Genichi Taguchi
Born on the first day of 1924, Genichi Taguchi studied textile engineering at Kiryu Technical College, with the intention of entering the family kimono business. However, with the escalation of World War II in 1942, he was drafted into the Astronomical Department of the Navigation Institute of the Imperial Japanese Navy. After the war, in 1948 he joined the Ministry of Public Health and Welfare, where he came under the influence of eminent statistician Matosaburo Masuyama, who kindled his interest in the design of experiments. He also worked at the Institute of Statistical Mathematics during this time, and supported experimental work on the production of penicillin at Morinaga Pharmaceuticals, a Morinaga Seika company. In 1950, he joined the Electrical Communications Laboratory (ECL) of the Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation just as statistical quality control was beginning to become popular in Japan, under the influence of W. Edwards Deming and the Japanese Union of Scientists and Engineers. ECL was engaged in a rivalry with Bell Labs to develop cross bar and telephone switching systems, and Taguchi spent his twelve years there in developing methods for enhancing quality and reliability. Even at this point, he was beginning to consult widely in Japanese industry, with Toyota being an early adopter of his ideas. During the 1950s, he collaborated widely and in 1954-1955 was visiting professor at the Indian Statistical Institute, where he worked with C. R. Rao, Ronald Fisher and Walter A. Shewhart. While working at the SQC Unit of ISI, he was introduced to the orthogonal arrays invented by C. R. Rao - a topic which was to be instrumental in enabling him to develop the foundation blocks of what is now known as Taguchi methods. On completing his doctorate at Kyushu University in 1962, he left ECL, though he maintained a consulting relationship. In the same year he visited Princeton University under the sponsorship of John Tukey, who arranged a spell at Bell Labs, his old ECL rivals. In 1964 he became professor of engineering at Aoyama Gakuin University, Tokyo. In 1966 he began collaboration with Yuin Wu, who later emigrated to the U.S. and, in 1980, invited Taguchi to lecture. During his visit there, Taguchi himself financed a return to Bell Labs, where his initial teaching had made little enduring impact. This second visit began a collaboration with Madhav Phadke and a growing enthusiasm for his methodology in Bell Labs and elsewhere, including Ford Motor Company, Boeing, Xerox and ITT. 5

Since 1982, Genichi Taguchi has been an advisor to the Japanese Standards Institute and executive director of the American Supplier Institute, an international consulting organization. His concepts pertaining to experimental design, the loss function, robust design, and the reduction of variation have influenced fields beyond product design and manufacturing, such as sales process engineering. CONTRIBUTIONS: After WWII Japanese manufacturers were struggling to survive with very limited resources. If it were not for the advancements of Taguchi the country might not have stayed afloat let alone flourish as it has. Taguchi revolutionized the manufacturing process in Japan through cost savings. He understood, like many other engineers, that all manufacturing processes are affected by outside influences, noise. However, Taguchi realized methods of identifying those noise sources which have the greatest effects on product variability. His ideas have been adopted by successful manufacturers around the globe because of their results in creating superior production processes at much lower costs. Here are some of the major contributions that Taguchi has made to the quality improvement world: The Loss Function - Taguchi devised an equation to quantify the decline of a customers perceived value of a product as its quality declines. Essentially, it tells managers how much revenue they are losing because of variability in their production process. It is a powerful tool for projecting the benefits of a quality improvement program. Taguchi was the first person to equate quality with cost.

Orthogonal Arrays and Linear Graphs - When evaluating a production process analysis will undoubtedly identify outside factors or noise which cause deviations from the mean. Isolating these factors to determine their individual effects can be a very costly and time consuming process. Taguchi devised a way to use orthogonal arrays to isolate these noise factors from all others in a cost effective manner. 6

Robustness - Some noise factors can be identified, isolated and even eliminated but others cannot. For instance it is too difficult to predict and prepare for any possible weather condition. Taguchi therefore referred to the ability of a process or product to work as intended regardless of uncontrollable outside influences as robustness. He was pivotal in many companies development of products and processes which perform uniformly regardless of uncontrollable forces; an obviously beneficial service.

Apart from these, his contributions include: System design Parameter design Tolerance design Design of experiments Management of interactions Analysis of experiments HONOURS: Indigo Ribbon from the Emperor of Japan Willard F. Rockwell Medal of the International Technology Institute Honorary member of the Japanese Society of Quality Control and of the American Society for Quality Shewhart Medal of the American Society for Quality (1995) Honored as a Quality Guru by the British Department of Trade and Industry (1990 Books Written:

BUILdING A BETTER MOUSETRAP -Vijay Mohan 1MBA N

impossible task. To our best we can throw some light on a few things of our area of interest. When one think about the history of electronics and its journey through the centuries, one would simply be left perplexed or jaw dropped about mankinds constant transcendental pursuit of something that is elusive for ordinary people. In e-Era or electronics era, what we see, what we have, what we think is becoming obsolete in a very short while. Even talks like boundaries between the nations are fading off (not in diplomatic terms), people are getting closer, new ideas are changing the world have become old. It seems that younger you are, luckier you get which is quite evident in the luxuries and other amenities the younger generation enjoys. Electronics! Where do we find its roots? How it all started? What made things more interesting for scientists to pursue it? The story of electricity which was predecessor of electronics started in 18th century with the invention of lightning arresting (A couple of centuries later weve even invented artificial rain). An interesting fact is the concept of bio electricity was discovered in 1771. Italian scientist Luigi Galvani experimented with a frog the generation of electricity which he termed as Animal Electricity (most of us know only the crazy frog produced by a Swede). When a metal scalpel was made to contact a sciatic nerve of a dissected frogs legs it created sparks and a small movement in the legs.

Writing anything about e-Era is like trying to dig out every single pebble in an ocean which is an

Electronics basically started as a philosophy then physics then electrical engineering has now got its own identity and going to be more diverse in the future. The changes of 20th century are mainly due to electronics. Morse code to source code for mobile telephony, Radio waves to RFID, transistor to i-Pod classic, mechanical calculator to FX series scientific calculators, old mono screen TV to 3D screen TV, simple straight razor to electric razor, phonautograph to i-Phone . You name it. There are innumerable inventions in the past centuries that lead to the breakthroughs in bio science, Aviation, Nautical science, Defense etc. New studies like quantum communication and bioinformatics are going to be the leading areas of studies in the future which can take the human civilization to new heights. 8

As it is quite evident that e-Era is yet an ocean to be explored I dont want to write much about it as our readers (who are bored even with things like social responsibility and things of that sort) find it hard to read what they already know. But we are always left with this one question. Where are we leading this world to? Is it for construction or destruction? God knows!! So let us look into something that is a result of e-Era and one of the most sensitive issues that has created ripples among the international top brasses. Moreover it is considered to be a boon for a few nations and bane for a few others.

Afore said issue which is the buzz word has been a nice fodder for the media worldwide. If your assumption is correct just pat yourself. It is the WIKILEAKS. Started as a nonprofit organization with a lot of tech savvies belonging to countries like China, Thailand, Australia, South Africa and Europe it has an internet activist as the founder called Julian Assange and a few others. It came out with statements that left the leaders of some important nations alarmed. Some high ended functions like Tor network (origination of data cannot be traced), Thermo-nuclear attack (something thatll cause real embarrassment for the USA in their Afghan affair), Insurance file (just in case something happens to Mr.Assange this key will automatically open the Pandoras Box) and so on, have left the governments just clueless about the leaks and highly prone to disastrous results if he is touched. It got immediate attention for its audacious reports that tarnished the image of many organizations worldwide Is it not a pipe dream for other rival organizations? The Pentagons Afghan affairs were ripped off but none knows if this will really make a difference? (George Bush Jr. won for 2nd time after Fahrenheit 9/11). Now coming to the functional part, theyve created this website using PHP Hypertext Process (a scripting language) just to make the web pages dynamic. This enables everyone to access the site & its links. It also uses ASP or Active Server Pages to make interpretation of scripting easy and faster. Its also said they use SQL Structured Query Language for data management. Considering the enormous data including videos, millions of coding etc it has to be organized in such a way that people shouldnt find it difficult to navigate. For a more supportable environment in most of the operating systems, servers and other platforms Adobe Flash Player is used. These are absolutely impossible without professionals with strong technical background. All these might not work well when it comes to securing the site in a high tech environment (hacking is recognized promising). Thus theyve multiple Mirror Sites which maintains copies of the site across the world (if one is inaccessible then the other is accessible) just to defend from external threats. Whats the point in doing all this without gaining popularity? Thus they are connected with Twitter and Facebook just to advertise and gain support. It is even considered to be a technical marvel of our generation where press freedom is just considered to be an illusion.

What about the funding part? Every group like this has a strong financial backup. Having five people working full time and more than 700 people working at times in need, Wiki leaks got donations from private donors for its operations like server maintenance and bureaucracy. In December 2009, it announced about the shortage of funds and just secluded itself from every possible external access to its website with the decision of reopening once the financial needs are met. Though PayPal suspended Wiki Leaks accounts and froze them, later on it was restored and hence its archives. Along with the donations theyve even decided to raise funds through auctions of access to early documents. The Wau Holland Foundation is helping in donation funds processing and it even stated that Wiki Leaks was functioning only through donations and those funds are not for paying the people involved but for maintenance of the operations.

The current scenario of Wiki leaks is something that doesnt require further explanation. So is it a construction or destruction? With the support from global powers like Russia and other Latin American heavy weights like Brazil, Venezuela and even the U.N, it seems to be constructive in terms bringing the evil to the lime light. Russian president Dmitry Medvedev had even stated that Mr.Assange be awarded with a Nobel peace prize. With the heated criticisms from other superpowers like the USA, Germany, the Great Britain, France other countries like Iran, Philippines it seems it is destructive. Id say its all about what they are supporting or objecting it for? Oh.. Im sorry I missed it. What about the impact of Wiki Leaks in India? Shhhh. Let us look for a better mouse trap to be built

E LOGISTICS

-Cherian Paul 1MBA M

E logistics is a dynamic set of communication, computing and collaborative technologies that transform key logistics process to be customer centric,by sharing data, knowledge and information with the supply chain partners.E logistics also enables synchronization of events and right decision making. The ultimate objective is to deliver the right products in right quantities at the right place and time to the right customers. The transformation of logistics processes through electronic means of moving , storing and manipulating data, information and knowledge or e logistics, will equip companies with greater agility to deliver customer configured products and value added services faster than competition and also enable the companies keep the promises of 2 day deliveries for PCs and 5 day deliveries for cars.

We created eLogistics to harness the power of web technology to bring new efficiency to freight transport operators. The Visual Logistic suite of products supports freight transport planners and traffic office managers with purpose built tools to; support their decision making; reduce the burden of their administration; improve their communication; and, step-change their efficiency. At the heart of the Visual Logistics freight transport systems is a powerful match engine that identifies all of the jobs within its scope that can be done by each asset (taking account of specification, position, time, and length of shift) and all of the assets that could do each job. The scope of the system can be single site, multi-site, multi-company community or freight marketplace. The three core processes for a e logistics firm are service innovation,Infrastructure management and Customer relationship management. The rapid growth and change in business process makes e logistics more important and critical for optimization. The typical e-logistics processes include Request For Quotes (RFQ), Shipping, and Tracking. The business process manager invokes the RFQ process to get the basic services such as getting the quotes in an e-logistics process. Whenever the response is obtained, the purchase order (PO) is updated. Shipping process is also invoked by the business process manager and upon completion updates the PO. Once goods are shipped, the tracking number is given to the customer and that tracking number is mapped to the PO number in an e-commerce system. Customers can track their shipment with the help of that number.

E-WASTE MANAGEMENT ANd dEVELOPMENT IN INdIA

-Hemanth 1MBA L
We have been speaking quite a lot about the benefits and transformations that electronic media and the internet has brought about in our lives. However, we forget the fact that the very same technology, which we consider to be boon to the entire human race, can be a reason for jeopardising the existence of humans. The e-waste generated by us is a major reason for the degradation of environment and the newest problem of global warming and environmental change. The electronic industry is the worlds largest and fastest growing manufacturing industry. During the last decade, it has assumed the role of providing a forceful leverage to the socio - economic and technological growth of a developing society. The consequence of its consumer oriented growth combined with rapid product obsolescence and technological advances are a new environmental challenge. It is an emerging problem as well as a business opportunity of increasing significance, given the volumes of e-waste being generated and the content of both toxic and valuable materials in them. 2. E-WASTE IN INdIA As there is no separate collection of e-waste in India, there is no clear data on the quantity generated and disposed of each year and the resulting extent of environmental risk. The preferred practice to get rid of obsolete electronic items in India is to get them in exchange from retailers when purchasing a new item. The business sector is estimated to account for 78% of all installed computers in India. Obsolete computers from the business sector are sold by auctions. Sometimes educational institutes or charitable institutions receive old computers for reuse. It is estimated that the total number of obsolete personal computers emanating each year from business and individual households in India will be around 1.38 million. According to a report of Confederation of Indian Industries, the total waste generated by obsolete or broken down electronic and electrical equipment in India has been estimated to be 1,46,000 tons per year. 3. IMPACTS OF E-WASTES Electronic wastes can cause widespread environmental damage due to the use of toxic materials in the manufacture of electronic goods. Hazardous materials such as lead, mercury and chromium in one form or the other are present in such wastes primarily consisting of Cathode ray tubes (CRTs), Printed board assemblies, Capacitors, Mercury switches and relays, Batteries, Liquid crystal displays (LCDs), Cartridges from photocopying machines, Selenium drums (photocopier) and Electrolytes. Although it is hardly known, e-waste contains toxic substances such as Lead and Cadmium in circuit boards; lead oxide and Cadmium in monitor Cathode Ray Tubes (CRTs); Mercury in switches and flat screen monitors; Cadmium in computer batteries; polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in older capacitors and transformers; and brominated flame retardants on printed circuit boards, plastic casings, cables and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) cable insulation that releases highly toxic dioxins and furans when burned to retrieve Copper from the wires. 12

Land-filling of e wastes can lead to the leaching of lead into the ground water. If the CRT is crushed and burned, it emits toxic fumes into the air. These products contain several rechargeable battery types, all of which contain toxic substances that can contaminate the environment when burned in incinerators or disposed of in landfills. The cadmium from one mobile phone battery is enough to pollute 600 m3 of water. The quantity of cadmium in landfill sites is significant, and considerable toxic contamination is caused by the inevitable medium and long-term effects of cadmium leaking into the surrounding soil. Because plastics are highly flammable, the printed wiring board and housings of electronic products contain brominated flame retardants, a number of which are clearly damaging to human health and the environment. STATUS OF E-WASTE MANAGEMENT IN INDIA Despite a wide range of environmental legislation in India there are no specific laws or guidelines for electronic waste or computer waste (Devi et al., 2004). As per the Hazardous Waste Rules (1989), e-waste is not treated as hazardous unless proved to have higher concentration of certain substances. The import of this waste therefore requires specific permission of the Ministry of Environment and Forests.

As the collection and re-cycling of electronic wastes is being done by the informal sector in the country at present, the Government has taken the following action/steps to enhance awareness about environmentally sound management of electronic waste: Several Workshops on Electronic Waste Management was organised by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) in collaboration with Toxics Link, CII etc. Action has been initiated by CPCB for rapid assessment of the E-Waste generated in major cities of the country. A National Working Group has been constituted for formulating a strategy for E-Waste management. A comprehensive technical guide on Environmental Management for Information Technology Industry in India has been published and circulated widely by the Department of Information Technology (DIT), Ministry of Communication and Information Technology. Demonstration projects has also been set up by the DIT at the Indian Telephone Industries for recovery of copper from Printed Circuit Boards. Although awareness and readiness for implementing improvements is increasing rapidly, the major obstacles to manage the e wastes safely and effectively remain. 13

CONCLUSION Solid waste management, which is already a mammoth task in India, is becoming more complicated by the invasion of e-waste, particularly computer waste. There exists an urgent need for a detailed assessment of the current and future scenario including quantification, characteristics, existing disposal practices, environmental impacts etc. Institutional infrastructures, including e-waste collection, transportation, treatment, storage, recovery and disposal, need to be established, at national and/or regional levels for the environmentally sound management of e-wastes. Establishment of e-waste collection, exchange and recycling centres should be encouraged in partnership with private entrepreneurs and manufacturers. Model facilities employing environmentally sound technologies and methods for recycling and recovery are to be established. Criteria are to be developed for recovery and disposal of E Wastes. Policy level interventions should include development of e-waste regulation, control of import and export of e-wastes and facilitation in development of infrastructure. An effective take-back program providing incentives for producers to design products that are less wasteful, contain fewer toxic components, and are easier to disassemble, reuse, and recycle may help in reducing the wastes. It should set targets for collection and reuse/recycling, impose reporting requirements and include enforcement mechanisms and deposit/refund schemes to encourage consumers to return electronic devices for collection and reuse/recycling. End-of life management should be made a priority in the design of new electronic products.

AdVANCEMENT OF I.T IN BUSINESS

-Girish Jain 1MBA L

In Todays world were ever you go you can find some part of technology. I.T the two letter word which has revolutionized the Business world in the past decade, where all the work was done on paper and all the processing done by the humans have been changed with the Information Technology with most of the work shifted to the machines. One of the best advancement of the I.T is instant communication with all the features like email, internet available at a touch on your it becomes easy for the Business people to analyze the proposals easily without having to be in front of the computer which saves the time.

The other turning point is the VOIP which is abbreviates as Voice Over Internet Protocol which provides the host a variety of features and uses analogue system. This protocol changes the long distance calls into local calls cutting down the tariff of the call hugely. The features include video calling, video conferencing and many more. Analysis have also underwent a modification, know the analysis is not done in two dimensional model. It has advanced to three dimensional model. Companies can simultaneously evaluate three variables in relation to one another so that they can better focused results. In the I.T a lot of travelling is involved, every time cannot all the physical files with them this has been made easy with the introduction of remote access system. The features are not only limited to access the remote system but it also involves downloading the information on the remote computer from the main computer. This also allows to access and trouble shoot the customer software. The most important fact helps to maintain a virtual relationship with the customer. The first rule of any technology used in a business is that automation applied to an efficient operation will magnify the efficiency. The second is that automation applied to an inefficient operation will magnify the inefficiency.- Bill Gates
