Guglhupf is an eclectic
German restaurant and caf. It
is haro to nno something lrom
the menu that is not too pricey,
but the caf has inexpensive,
delicious pastries. The coffee
is relatively cheap with 50 cent
renlls. but more importantlv. the
coffee is high quality despite the
low price. With seating inside
and outside, the atmosphere is
nice, the service is good and the
food is delicious. -JB

Chubbys Tacos has cheap,
delicious Mexican food. I had
a simple, but good beans and
cheese taco priced at a reason-
able $1.50 and a meat taco at
$2. Choose from the nine types
of salsa that are offered in vary-
ing styles and levels of spice.
I had a watermelon juice to
drink, which is unique and deli-
cious, especially for $2. -JB

Eating at Lo 1oooito is
like stepping off the streets of
Durham and into a small town
in Mexico. The food is authen-
tic and the corn tortillas are
made daily by hand. I enjoyed
tacos stuffed with oool, a suc-
culent watery cactus popular in
Mexico.
First a conventional ser-
vice station and later a burger
joint, the building sports a
large cow on the roof, inspiring
students unable to remember
the restaurants name to call it
The Cow Place. However, Lo
1oooito decided to keep more
than just the cow; the front of
the building is covered with
a mural of tacos, chili pep-
pers ano. renecting Durham`s
Spanglish culture, hotdogs and
hamburgers (all on the menu).
Be sure to choose a sunny day
to visit or be prepared to order
take-out, because all seating is
outside on picnic tables. -EP

Duke Gardens is a great
place to be outside. It is beauti-
ful and well maintained, even
when most nowers are not
blooming. I brought bread to
leeo the oucks ano nsh in the
pond. Many people were sit-
ting on blankets, enjoying the
good weather. Best of all, ad-
mission to the gardens is free
except for a small parking fee,
but no-charge parking is avail-
able on the street in exchange
for a little extra walking. -JB

The Nasher Museum is
open and spacious, sparsely
furnished with several large

the featured exhibitions Pi.o

are each $5. Exhibitions are
free during Nashers Family
Days every few months. Stay-
ing on budget, I only toured
the permanent collection, but
I enjoyed the ancient Italian
water jugs depicting muscular
soldiers carved from cracking
terracotta. Anyone who loves
mooern art will have oilncultv

Locopops offers home-
made popsicles in many unique
navors ranging lrom Chocolate
Rosemary to Mango Chile. I
had a small Cookies n Cream
popsicle for only $1.50. It was
a delicious snack or dessert for
a small price. The cashier was
friendly and helpful, and I en-
joyed the experience. Be cau-
tious not to cut it too close to
closing time; they had already
closed shortly
before 5:00.

Come ready to work out after
scheduling a free 45-minute
boxing class. I became slightly
apprehensive when I noticed
that the man wrapping my
hand in gauze for boxing pro-
tection had purple welts on his
own hands. Sometime between
the one-handed push-ups and
the front kick, I got a glimpse of
boot camp, but do not be wary.
After several rounds of beating
a heavy black punching bag, I
felt the stress from school dis-
sipate, and the instructor even
hao oilncultv pulling me awav
at the end of the class. If you
discover that you enjoy kick-
boxing, you can register for a
membership for $54 a month.

Upon entering China
Palace, the waitress handed
me two menus. The nrst. the
Special Chinese Menu, of-
fered nothing under $9.95, so
I used the regular menu to stay
within the budget. I ordered
vegetable fried rice. The rice
contained mushrooms, egg
and bean sprouts, but it lacked
something. Most fried rice
has enough grease to polish
a car, but this rice barely left
a shine on the blue and white
china plate. I am sure my ar-
teries thanked me, but my taste
buds did not. After my meal,
I cracked open my fortune
cookie: Good things are in
store for you. Maybe a larger
budget is in my future. After all,
the Kung pao squid for $13.25
off the Chinese Menu looked
interesting. -EP

Elmos is great for any meal
at any time of the day. It sup-
plies crayons and coloring pages
for people who want to show
off their creativity while they
wait for their food. I ordered a
cheeseburger, which seems ge-
neric but is especially good at
Elmos. Elmos is known for its
homestyle burgers and sweet
tea, not to mention its french
fries. -JB
