Katie, What is the best reason for the existence of Greek life?
Cami Brannen, Columbus
Greek life may get outrageous at times but they sure do provide all of the other students in college a great excuse to dress up in ridiculous out ts and parade around downtown like hooligans. Because of Greek life socials on ursday, Friday and Saturday nights, anyone can go out in any number of out ts ranging from a dinosaur costume to pajamas and no one asks any questions. - Katie

SPOTLIGHT
DEFINITELY ON TRACK!
The Texas Tech Track and Field program has had a fabulous season. As of press time, the men were ranked #5 and the women #18. After finishing the NCAA West Preliminaries, they sent 16 athletes to the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Shane Braithwaite, Omo Osaghae and Brandon Tucker have been studs in the 110m Hurdles and Bryce Lamb in only his second such competition this season made it in the triple jump. The fearsome foursome of Tara Thomas, Candace Jackson, Taylor Evans and Erica Alexander will again represent the Lady Raiders in the 4x100m Relay. Hailing from Brisbane, Australia, sophomore Julian Wruck will again throw discus at the NCAA Outdoor championships. Head coach Wes Kittley should be confident that his 16 Red Raiders will fare well in the Championships once again. He led the team to 17 indoor honors and 15 outdoor honors last season. Were expecting more of the same from Kittleys bunch this year!

STEVEN JACKSON St. Louis Rams DIAMONDS IN THE ROUGH The Texas Tech baseball team was honored with two firstteam All Conference players with Barrett Barnes and David Paiz this season. This is Barnes second such honor, and he is the first Red Raider to ever be named in back-to-back seasons. Congrats to Barnes and Paiz!

HOT BAND
NO DRY COUNTY
I rst heard this Country/Americana band play at the Blue Light Live the birthplace of many Texas Country bands and singers and this group of boys is no exception. I sat down with Trent Langford, lead vocalist and got him to give me the dirt on No Dry County. What is behind the name? People are always disappointed when I answer this question but Monte is actually the only original member of the band so sadly I cant tell that story. From what Im told the band was named spontaneously before a show by former lead guitarist Javier Amodio. How did you guys start playing together? I was playing mainly acoustic shows with Mitchell when Monte asked if I would play with No Dry County in 2009, Mitchell would join in March of 2010. After the loss of John Farley and Kris Barton we had a revolving door on the drums until Matt Newsom came on last May. What did you listen to growing up? My rst recollection of music growing up was in the Church of Christ singing acapella gospel and thats where a lot of our three and four part harmonies come from. A friend gave me Robert Earl Keens album Gringo Honeymoon in high school and that led me on to other great songwriters like Radney Foster and Paul Overstreet. Mitchell and Matt come from a metal and rock background which helps provide what we hope is a unique sound to Country/ Americana scene. Montes list of in uences helps to ll in the span from country to metal. Where do you gain inspiration for songs? It sounds clich but honestly real life experiences. I try to write on a consistent basis and usually draw from whats happening around me either directly or in other peoples lives. What is the craziest thing that has happened to you on stage? One night at Blaines in San Angelo we had a 94 year old 410 man named Shorty dance up on stage and hijack our show. While we were busy laughing he grabbed the mic stepped up on a speaker and led the entire crowd in a round of La Bamba to which the guys eventually joined in. Nobody knew the verses so Shorty continued to sing the chorus until somebody helped him o stage. What is your message in your music? We hope people leave our show with a feeling they experienced something genuine.

Expressing their true hip-hop beats and rhymes all over Texas, e Mohicans create music that is truly unforgettable. e creators of the sounds that keep your head bobbin through each track is the true reason why they became the winners of College Battle of the Bands at SXSW. Performing with pure soul that draws has the audience begging for more, Devan and Dave keep you lingering for another track. Study Breaks sat down with the talented pair to get to know e Mohicans a bit more.
How did you guys come up with The Mohicans? Devan: I randomly thought of it Devan: Musically, Im also inspired by a lot of other genres and people like Red Hot Chili peppers, Rage Against the Machine, Little Dragon, Prince, really a lot of people. when Devan saw me perform some spoken word at a contest they had out there. He had already been making beats for a while and was looking for another artist who doesnt just rap about nonsense, so it all just worked out.
Im about to graduate in December, so for me its crunch time. I get pretty busy and cant work on music as much as Id like to.

A Soldiers Story Marco joined the Army in 2003 and served for six years. During that time, he served with a physiological operations units and did two tours in Iraq. He received an Honorable Discharge in 2008 and moved to Austin. Marco joined out of El Paso, spurred by an interest in international a airs and a desire to succeed professionally. He was not hesitant to join, despite being gay. By the time I was senior in high school, I knew a handful of gay soldiers who were stationed at the local base, Fort Bliss. e majority of them were successful professionally and I wanted to follow in their footsteps. Marco felt di erent from other kids as early as middle school, but didnt come out until high school. I decided to come out to classmates I was close to and by the end of high school, most people who knew me, knew I was gay. Ive never really fully come out to my parents, but my dad knows and my mom must have a good idea I am. Its actually still di cult for me because my mom is very
conservative so I really dont like to talk to her about it. My dad is very open-minded so there are no issues with him. Marco said that at rst he tried to hide it while in the Army. After being in for a while, it was an open secret to most. During my initial two years, I was a little more conservative about saying stu . I was worried about getting kicked out. Secrets e hardest part about serving as a gay service member was the secrets he kept from friends and co-workers. At work, people talk about their wives, girlfriends, all that stu . I couldnt do that. It sucked having to lie all the time. While in the Army, Marco had around four relationships. Only one of those was with another service member. ere were close calls when Marco almost got caught. I was staying at a temporary room and I had gone out to a bar. I saw an old friend of mine that I had known for about a year. We ended up hooking up at my place. In the middle of the night, they tried to put someone in my room. e
Marco and fellow soldiers while serving in Iraq.
people in charge of dealing out that barracks room thought I was gone. ey tried to open the door with their own key, and I basically jumped out naked from bed and I was saved by the fact that the person they tried to put in the room was a girl. If it was a guy, I could have gotten caught.
THE POLICY The policy was introduced in 1993 by President Bill Clinton. Clinton campaigned on the promise to allow all citizens to serve in the military regardless of sexual orientation, but had to compromise with those who sought an all out ban on homosexuality in the military after election. The repeal of Dont Ask, Dont Tell was signed by President Obama in December.
At work, people talk about their wives, girlfriends, all that stuff. I couldnt do that. It sucked having to lie all the time.
Policies Marco addressed the assertion of some opponents of gays in the military who claim DADT could negatively impact unit cohesion or distract soldiers from the mission at hand. e unit cohesion argument is kind of ridiculous. ere were people in Delta Force and Green Berets who were gay. It was a twelve-man team and everyone knew they were gay. If someone can operate at that high a level, where you literally live and breathe with those people, then I dont see why it couldnt work with the rest of the military. It happens in the real world, people who have issues with homosexuality work with other coworkers. People have to get over other gay coworkers. Many supporters of the old Dont Ask Dont Tell policy, such as General James Amos, the commandant of the Marine Corps, say that having openly gay soldiers in close quarters with straight soldiers could cause discomfort or strain. Marco acknowledges there could be issues. You have to work together regardless of the issues you have with each other. When I was in the Army, some service members had issues with outof-shape or female or weak or dumb or gay or annoying or mean or lazy service members. ey still would have to work with them. Its an all volunteer Army, you have to work with the personnel you have even if you feel uncomfortable with them. A Change Marco says that regardless of whether DADT was overturned, it was e ectively over before the signing. What used to happen, just a higher unit commander would have to sign o to get someone
Marco outside the US Embassy in Baghdad while he was working for the State Department.
THE OTHER SIDE kicked out. en, to get kicked out they bumped it up to the service secretaries. So, since October no one has been kicked out because of DADT. After the repeal of DADT, Marco was thrilled. I watched on C-SPAN when the Senate voted for nal passage of the DADT repeal. I popped open a beer and smiled and cried quite a bit. Marco believes there will have to be training in place to help soldiers cope with the new reality. When youre in the military, there are constantly training classes you have to go to. Whether it is suicide prevention, learning more about your job, equal opportunity or whatever. ere are always classes and lectures. ey PowerPoint you to death. So, they will have to instruct Soldiers, Sailors and Marines on how to deal with the removal of Dont Ask, Dont Tell. There is no shortage of voices supporting Dont Ask Dont Tell and the core premise of not allowing gays in the military. The Marines top General, James Amos is one such voice. In a Washington Post interview, he said that the allowing homosexuals in the military would affect unit cohesiveness and pointed to polling data from Army and Marine combat personnel that showed a lack of support for allowing homosexuals openly serve.
AIRBORNE WINGS The Army Parachutist Badge is awarded to all military personnel of any service who complete the US Army Basic Airborne Course at Fort Benning, Georgia. It signies that the soldier is a trained Army Parachutist, and is qualied to participate in airborne operations. PROUD VETERAN LIFT THE BAN SERVICE MEMBER LEGAL DEFENSE NETWORK A non-prot legal services, watchdog, and policy organization in the United States. SLDN is dedicated to ending discrimination and harassment of gay and lesbian U.S. military personnel negatively affected by the Dont Ask, Dont Tell policy which was enacted in 1993.

FROZEN TREATS
compiled by: jennifer yu
Hot bikinis, hot bods, and hot summer vacations. Everything is hot, hot, hot in the summer, but sometimes you just need a little cooldown. Frozen treats are a great way to take a break from the heat and chill out with a little sweetness in your life. Not to mention, these recipes are no sweat!
Jello Pops
Ingredients: 1 package of Jell-O, any flavor Directions: Make Jell-O according to package directions. Pour into popsicle mold and place popsicle sticks on top. Freeze for about 8-12 hours or until completely frozen. Pour some hot water over the frozen molds to help release popsicles.
Sangria Pops
Ingredients: 3/4 cup fruity red wine 1/2 cup apples, diced small 1/2 orange, peeled and diced small 3/4 cup orange juice 1/3 cup lemon juice 3 tablespoons sugar Directions: Combine red wine, apples and oranges in a small bowl and let sit for at least 10 minutes. Combine orange juice, lemon juice and sugar in a small saucepan over medium-high heat. Stir occasionally and heat just enough to dissolve sugar. Allow to cool to room temperature. Pour mix into popsicle molds, diving the fruit evenly. Add cooled orange juice mixture to wine. Leave a quarter-inch of space at the top and use a chopstick to dislodge any air bubbles. Freeze for an hour then insert popsicle stick. Freeze until firm, at least eight hours.
Ingredients: 2 cups cantaloupe, cut into half-inch cubes and frozen 2 cups honeydew melon, cut into half-inch cubes and rozen 2 tablespoons sugar 1 cup water Directions: Place the frozen cantaloupe pieces, 1 cup water and one tablespoon of sugar into a blender and pure on high speed until fruit is smooth and pourable. Transfer to a bowl and keep chilled. Rinse blender and repeat using frozen honeydew, water and remaining sugar. Alternately layer about 1/2 cup of pured
