Photoelectric sensor terminology and application tips

Transit light, gain information
Modern optoelectronic sensors operate on the basis of different light sources. Depending on the application, invisible infrared, blue, red, green or laser light may be used. Every change in the light beam is detected, evaluated in the receiver and converted to an analogue or digital signal. Different functional principles open up a range of applications for opto-electronic sensors in all areas of automation.
Through-beam photoelectric sensors

Long ranges can be obtained using separate transmitting and receiving devices.
Photoelectric sensors with fibre-optic cables

In particularly confined spaces, fibre-optic cables are often the only way of getting a sensor into position. The flexible plastic and fibre-optic cables increase the field of application of proximity sensors and through-beam systems.
PHOTOELECTRIC SENSORS
Photoelectric proximity sensors and reflex sensors

Photoelectric proximity sensors make use of the light reflected from the object being detected. The sensor detects the reflected light and evaluates it - background and foreground blanking both help to improve efficiency. Photoelectric reflex sensors require an additional reflector which is mounted opposite the sender-receiver unit. Every break in the light beam is detected and evaluated.
Contrast, colour and luminescence sensors

Complex sensors are used not only for detecting, but also distinguishing objects. Whether grey scale contrast, luminescence detection or colour definition are required, there is a sensor specially designed for each.
Distance sensors
Binary switching or measurement required? Analogue sensors also measure distances with the help of time-of-flight measurements or triangulation, depending on the application.

Selecting the right photoelectric sensors
The right sensor for your applications

Photoelectric proximity sensors, energetic
The least expensive solution is the energetic photoelectric proximity sensor with adjustable sensitivity. A light surface reflects more light than a dark surface and can, therefore, be detected from a greater distance.
Photoelectric proximity sensors, foreground suppression

Photoelectric proximity switches with foreground suppression are able to detect objects within a defined scanning distance. All objects between the scanning distance (set to the background) and the scanner itself are detected above the minimum size. Suppression of the foreground is achieved by means of a special arrangement of sender and receiver elements. To ensure that these sensors can
function reliably, the background must be relatively light in colour and not fluctuate.
Photoelectric proximity sensors, background suppression

In order to achieve similar results with a dark surface, the sensitivity of the switch must be increased. The detection of a dark object in front of a light background is a problem for energetic sensors. Owing to its higher remission, the background outshines the object. The sensors are, however, ideal for detecting a light object in front of a dark background. The operating principle of photoelectric proximity sensors with background suppression is based on the geometrical relationship between the sender and receiver elements.
The sensor is adjusted to the object located in the scanning plane. Signals from objects which are behind the set scanning plane are supressed. Photoelectric proximity sensors with background supression can be negatively influenced by high-gloss objects in the background, e.g. glass panels, polished metal etc. These effects can increase if the background within the specified scanning distance is not defined. This can be solved by screening off or tilting devices.

Photoelectric reflex sensors
With photoelectric reflex sensors, the emitted light beam is reflected by a reflector and then received and evaluated by the device. Polarisation filters prevent incorrect operation when reflective objects are detected. Transparent films and shrink wrap may influence the way in which the reflex photoelectric switches with polarisation filters function. Devices with reduced sensitivity solve this problem. The use of laser diodes allows greater scanning ranges while simultaneously maintaining a high resolution. Focus ranges can be set with high precision.
Throughbeam photoelectric sensors

The through-beam photoelectric sensor consists of a separate sender and receiver.
Photoelectric reflex sensors for detecting transparent objects

These reflex photoelectric sensors are characterised by their extremely low switching hysteresis. Even low levels of light between the sensor and reflector, caused for example, by glass or PET bottles, are detected reliably. The newly developed system checks and continually adjusts the switching threshold
electronically to adapt to the gradual accumulation of dirt, which would otherwise lead to a system failure.
Photoelectric sensors with fibre-optic cable

In the case of photoelectric sensors with fibre-optic cable (e.g. WLL 160), the sender and receiver are contained in a single housing. A separate fibre-optic cable is used for the sender and the receiver for operation as a through-beam system. For use as a proximity sensor the sender and receiver fibre optic cables are combined in one cable.
The separate device configuration makes large scanning ranges possible. The use of laser diodes allows greater scanning ranges while simultaneously maintaining a high resolution. Focus ranges can be set with high precision.

Introduction
Colour sensors transmit light (red, blue, green) and calculate the chromaticity values from the radiation reflected from the object. It compares the radiation to previously stored reference values and if the received values are within the set tolerance range, a switching output is activated. Sick colour sensors can detect the colour of opaque objects by analysing the reflected light, and transparent objects by using a reflector mounted opposite the sensor.

Function
The ST03LCA switch testing device is suitable for function testing all 2, 3 and 4wire pnp and npn DC indicators and for testing NAMUR sensors. Power is supplied to the sensor via the 0V and 18V terminal. For 3 and 4-wire sensors, the signal line is also applied to the third connection terminal. When the sensor output switches, this is displayed by an LED and indicated as well by a buzzing tone. Because of the high output load of max. 100 mA, ultrasonic sensors or similar devices can also be connected. The automatic On/Off function prevents unnecessary use of energy and makes operation simple.

Fixed focus barcode scanners - CLV430 series

The raster scanner produces a 15mm raster consisting of 8 lines of red light then analyses reflections from the barcode. This device is normally used to detect barcodes presented in a picket fence format. Due to the distribution of the scanner beams, the barcode is read in several different places. As a result the code is reliably detected. The CLV430 series offers a choice of scan technologies. The line scanner produces a single line of red light and detects reflections directly from the barcode. This device is normally used to detect barcodes presented in a ladder format or at an angle from the vertical plain.

Operating principle of data matrix

The readers do not work as scanners, but record an image of the object using a CCD camera. This image is evaluated by means of an integrated signal processor. The finder pattern is used as identification and alternating pattern spans the data field. The data is located within these parameters.
