GARDEN TOUR- The 10th annual Chapman Garden Tour, themed Ideas & Inspirations, will take place on Saturday, July 16, from 10 am to 3 pm. Featured will be nine private gardens in Glens Falls, South Glens Falls, & Fort Edward. Visitors will see extensive varieties of annuals, perennials, grasses, and shrubbery creatively displayed with stonework, art sculptures and water features. They will learn first-hand how proper placement and choice of the vast array of hardy varieties of flowers and shrubs ensures a successful garden in challenging zone 4 & 5 climates. In addition to the lovely private gardens, this year the tour route will highlight a few of the many streetscapes now found throughout the city. In recent years, homeowners and businesses have spent time and effort to landscape curbside strips, islands, and boulevards in their neighborhoods. One well known example is the traffic circle island in the center of Glens Falls, with adjacent streets beautifully finished with flower-filled urns, hanging baskets and planters. The development of a landscape is a challenge, but the end result is the pride & enjoyment derived from living in a beautiful setting. As one of the homeowners summed up gardening, One of the most delightful things about gardening is the sense of anticipation that it provides. Ticket, which cost $15, will be available starting July 1st at the Chapman Historical Museum, 348 Glen Street, Glens Falls, and at Hair Design, 22 Washington St., Glens Falls. On tour day they will be available at the museum, and at gardens at 37 Sisson Rd. Fort Edward; 20 Arbor Dr. Glens Falls;, & 16 Pine St., Queensbury. COUNTY YOUTH HAVE THE CHANCE TO DISPLAY PROJECTS, ACTIVITIES, AND TALENTS! Warren County Youth, 5 to 19 years of age, are invited to exhibit items they have made in school, in Scouts, or just did for fun at the 2011 Warren County Youth Fair on Saturday, August 6th. All youth have the opportunity to earn ribbons. In addition, youth 5 to 19 years of age have the opportunity to earn cash premium awards from the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets for their work. Exhibit categories range from creative arts, photography, clothing and textile projects, to pets, food, natural resources, vegetable gardening, horticulture, and mechanical sciences. All projects are subject to the rules for specific departments and fair books are currently available free of charge at the Cornell University Cooperative Extension office during office hours of 8:30AM to 4:30PM Monday through Thursday. Judging Day for the exhibits is scheduled for Friday, August 5 from 1:00 pm to 8:00 pm at the fairgrounds on Schroon River Road in Warrensburg. The youth and their exhibits are judged face to face based on the capability of the youngster, and not by comparing one youngster and/or exhibit against another (referred to as the Danish system; this allows for more than one placement at each level). Some exhibits will be selected to go to the New York State Fair in Syracuse. The judging experience helps youth gain appreciation of workmanship and helps improve their skills, techniques, and confidence. The exhibits must be displayed for public viewing on Saturday, August 6th from 10:00AM to 2:00PM at the fairgrounds. A youth talent show is scheduled for Saturday, August 6th. The talent show is divided into two divisions; the mini (ages 3-12) and maxi (ages 13-21) and are scheduled for 11AM and 1PM respectively. The talent show is guided by NYS Fair guidelines and the top winners have the option of attending the NYS Fair Talent Show. Exhibit entries are due to the CCE office by July 15th. Please note all exhibitors and their families should plan to bring a picnic lunch to enjoy as there will be no food vendors on the grounds. For more information on how to exhibit at the Youth Fair please contact the Cornell Cooperative Extension Education Center in Warrensburg (623-3291 or 6684881) or visit Extensions web site at: http://www.cce.cornell.edu/ warren/
