CHALLENGING THE CHANGE
When God is for us, who can be against us?
Giving the synthesis of the best our President incoming as
well as the outgoing President Lion M.Seetha Rao stood like
the rock of Gibraltar in leading our Club Lions Club of
Hyderabad East to the heights of glory for the 2010-11. Time
does not wait for anybody, sometimes we feel that the
time went off very fast or very slow. Its only in our
thinking. Seconds, minutes and hours dont go on any
individuals commands. Its the CLOCK that governs
the time.
She has executed every moment with dignity and pride.
Excelled in her performance expressed every minute her
zeal to move forward with her effective leadership
concentrated on her action plan empowering her abilities
and Club members talent and resources. She has
undoubtedly brought the synthesis of the best. Lived to
the ideals of our great Lion M.Seshgiri Rao we and she
are well poised for tomorrow. I know we are getting
emotional and this emotional approach made the thoughts
of all the members to make Lion M.Seetha Rao to be our
President for 2011-12 also only because our unfinished
mission Eye Hospital.
We were just 48 members in the beginning of last year
and today we have added another aspiring potential
members with great talent to make a total of strong 80
Lions and we made it. Today all the 32 new Lions who
joined our fold of Lionism are very talented individuals
with potentiality par excellence. Their involvement and
commitment speaks their commitment in our projects like
the home for the orphanage or the old age home their
concern to do something that they are proud of themselves
as Lions of Hyderabad East Club. With their positive
thinking we look positive also and sure to add more laurels
and credits to our Club.
It may not be out of place as the editor of Horizon to
emphasize for the Club to get the heights of our dreams
coming true, the true involvement comes only from your
dedication, devotion and determination and make the Club
Hyderabad East as best as yesterday, today and tomorrow.
Long live Lionism and make your ideal dreams come true.

A great writer A. Morman says, "wisdom is not a power
at all. But it becomes a great power when it is
implemented into action".
On the eve of our 44
th
Installation Celebration, I
extended my hearty welcome to all our Lions
Freternity, friends, phylontrophists and well wishers. I
welcome every one because Lionism taught us how
to lead our lives by rendering service to the society
through friendship.
Lionism taught us how to reach the poor, needy and
downtrodden by extending our hands of service and
love.
It made us humane by developing empathy towards
society, teaching community development and social
service.
It made us leaders by imposing punctuality in our
J^x `e ....
activities and provided opportunities to elevate
ourselves and also recognise our innerselves.
Lions Club of Hyderabad East is one of the senior
most club in the Dist. 324C6 with a membership of
80. All these years our club has done yeomen services
to the poor and downtrodden through its service
oriented and dedicated members. They are all our
seniors, rolemodels and guides.
We have a prestigious project of blood bank
(Bhanji Kheraj Blood Bank, Feroz Gandhi Park).
The blood bank is functioning since 25 years
uninterruptedly, and reaching all sections of the
society by donating the most essential - Blood.
A village called Tumukunta is adopted by our club
and is developed into a model village.
For the last 30 years our continues activity
specially on Raksha Bandan is held at Radha
Krishna Home for the Orphanage, Hyderabad.
The other activities of our club are...
Conducting 'Mega Health Camps' continiously -
for eye, ENT, bone density test, diabetes, plastic
surgery, cancer checkup, general health camps,
etc.,
Adopted two government schools and providing
them with water tanks, toilets, uniforms, books
and merit scholorships.
Providing sewing machines to the needy women
and donating wheel chairs, callpers, blind sticks
to the disabled.
Conducting Lions Quest Programmes to guide
adolescent age group children.
Planting different varities of plants to make our
environment green and pollution free.
Above mentioned activities are only a few. Apart
from these, many members are doing many
service activities at their individual level. Activities
like supporting cancer patients' treatments,
providing money for poor students' school and
college education, supporting cardiac operations
and helping dumb and deaf patients are worth
mentioning.
Apart from all these activities, starting an eye
hospital is our dream-project which will come into
reality this year.

Secretarys Thoughts
Improvise & Innovate!
Dear Lions,
There is more to us than we
know. If we can be made to see
it, perhaps for the rest of our lives
we will be unwilling to settle for less.
This Kurt Hahn quote is the gist of my experience with
Lionism. Involvement with our club has added new
perspectives to my vision of community and social
service. Now, as I gear up for my new responsibility as
Secretary of the club. I look forward to a year where in
we work with a motto Improvise & Innovate.
Effectiveness and efficiency of any organization owe
their existence to a system of continuous evolution.
To evolve, we need to improvise on our past and at the
same time be receptive to innovations that beckon us
to the future. In this era of social media and web, there
are several new channels available for communication
and expression. I take immense pride and pleasure in
informing you that our club now has its own Website,
Facebook page, Twitter profile and a Blog. I thank you
all for the overwhelming support, and appreciation for
the first issue of COMMUNIQUE LCHEs unique
e-communication. Email and newer developments in
the LCI website will ensure that reporting of activity
and memberships will be prompt, easier and of course,
Greener!
On that note, Go Green would be one of the key
aspects of our functioning. Paperless communication,
car pools, tree plantation, etc., will be encouraged.
Meetings of our club, which have always been cherished
by one and all including the guests, will be held with
the same fervor. Specific themes, games and contests
will be organized every month. Eminent speakers on
relevant topics will be invited and a follow-up activity
held. This year would be a landmark year in the history
of our club as we look forward to the establishment of
our very own Eye Hospital. Every possible effort would
be put in to ensure that this dream project is completed
at the earliest.
Tobacco has been identified as contributing to one out
of every ten adult deaths worldwide. The successful
Tobacco prevention and cessation programme, held for
more than two thousand employees of the MRF factory,
Sadashivpet, last year, has set a bench mark for the
kind of anti-tobacco programmes that we will organize
in the future. Other activities for the year, Smiling
Schools Preventive Dentistry for School Children
with the portable dental unit of the club, R K Home
(Orphanage) Health care and basic needs provision,
Complete medical and dental care of the Elderly at
Vriddhashram (old age home), Blood Donation, Eye
care, Tree plantation, Quest programme, Diabetes
awareness and much more will ensure that our
Lionistic year would be worthwhile and memorable,
for us, as well as for the society in general.
So, Lets gear up and get going!!
This time like all times is a very good one if we but know
what to do with it. - R. W. Emerson
Greetings & Gratitude!

Message
Lion President Seetha Rao
I am glad to learn that our Club
Bulletin "HORIZON" will be re-
leased on the Installation Night
of our Club to be held on
12.7.2011. My hearty congratu-
lations to the Editors Ln. Ravindra Reddy and
Ln.Bhagwan Das Boob for getting the first Bulletin re-
leased on the very first meeting of the Lionestic Year
2011-2012.
As Lions, we have a wide open door through which
we can enter, an opportunity to give ourselves, and we
should give according to what God has given to us, for
the more that has been entrusted to us, the more will
He expect of us, and the more we will have to give
account of our Stewardship here on earth. Let us not
be Lions in name and seek the outward Glory only, but
let us live Lionism in the Spirit, so that our giving may
show something of what we owe Him who has given
us so freely of His Grace.
My greetings to our President Lion Seetha Rao and all
other members of her team.
With Regards,
Lion O.P. Goenka, PDG
Old Age Home
at Seetaram Bagh
One important aspect of social
service is the care of the senior
citizens of our society. Changing
times, and altered family norms,
dominated by nuclear set ups
have made this age group more
vulnerable and dependent. More
and more senior citizens hailing
from the Indian middle class
background, nowadays, are seeking accommodation in
the old age homes. These homes create a family like
atmosphere among the residents. Senior citizens
experience a sense of security and friendship where
they share their joys and sorrows & health and
happiness with each other. Considering the emotional
upsets that leads senior citizens to relocate themselves
to old-age homes, it is important for the society to
contribute to their well being in some form or other.
As a part of our social responsibility, The Aadhar
Foundation, which is committed to provision of medical
care to needy sections of the society, in association with
Lions Club of Hyderabad East has adopted Sri
Jagannath Math old-age home in Seetaram Bagh,
Hyderabad, to provide free, comprehensive, round the
year medical care to the residents.
In this regard, the first Healthcare Camp was conducted
on 15
th
May 2011 at the Sri Jaganath Math Old Age
home premises. Medical and Dental records of all the
residents were created. The basic health care needs
were addressed covering the following Specialities:
1) Orthopaedic 2) Cardiology 3) Diabetes 4) Eye Care
5) General Health 6) Physical Fitness, 7) Dental
Specialist doctors from above areas had given due
attention to all the inmates of old age home. The
examinations were followed up with relevant diagnostic
tests, appointment of Physiotherapist and supply of
medicines and supplements for use throughout the year.
It was also decided to provide ARTIFICAL LIMB to
one of the inmates at the cost of Contributors.
Spectacles and eye drops were distributed to twelve
residents. Dental Care including provision of Complete
Dentures to two residents and replacement of missing
teeth among others is being taken care of.
This project was planned and implemented successfully
through combined efforts of Ln. Dr.Sanjay Tapadia,
Ln. Kamlesh Attal, Ln. Sandeep Zanwar, Ln. Sachin
Kabra, Ln.Dr.Pavan Baldava, Ln. Amol Kasat, Ln.
Dr.Varsha Tapadia, Ln. Dr.Dipti Baldava, Ln. Dr. Parth
Patel, Dr.Seth, LCHE President Ln. Seetha Rao, Ln.
Bhagwandas Boob, Ln. Puspha Boob, Ln. Vijaylakshmi,
and other support staff. This project also owes its
success to the coordination and support of the
caretakers and the office bearers of the old age home.
Before I conclude this article, I would like to appeal
and impress upon members and families of our club to
visit & spend some time in old age home at least in a
year along with kids - may be on birthdays or marriage
anniversaries or during our activities. The joy
emerging out of it will not only give you real satisfaction
but, it will also be a unique experience which will
ultimately lead to REAL happiness. It will also help
our children to understand the pain prevalent in
different sections of society & social responsibilities
arising out of it.
However, theres much more that needs to be done,
and the journey must continue

The day will come when my body will lie upon a white
sheet neatly tucked under four corners of a mattress
located in a hospital; busily occupied with the living
and the dying. At a certain moment a doctor will
determine that my brain has ceased to function and
that, for all intents and purposes, my life has stopped.
When that happens, do not attempt to instil artificial
life into my body by the use of a machine. And dont
call this my deathbed. Let is be called the bed of life,
and let my body be taken from it to help others lead
fuller lives.
Give my sight to the man who has never seen a sunrise,
a babys face or love in the eyes of a woman.
Give my heart to a person whose own heart has caused
nothing but endless days of pain.
Give my blood to the teenager who was pulled from
the wreckage of his car, so that he might live to see his
grandchildren play.
Give my kidneys to the one who depends on a machine
to exist from week to week.
Take my bones, every muscle, every fibre and nerve in
my body and find a way to make a crippled child walk.
Explore every corner of my brain.
Take my cells, if necessary, and let them grow so that,
some day a speechless boy will shout at the crack of a
bat and a deaf girl will hear the sound of rain against
her window.
Burn what is left of me and scatter the ashes to the
winds to help the flowers grow.
If you must bury something, let it be my faults, my
weakness and all prejudice against my fellow man.
Give my sins to the devil.
Give my soul to God.
If, by chance, you wish to remember me, do it with a
kind deed or word to someone who needs you. If you
do all I have asked, I will live forever.

To Remember me...
Extra Miles for Extra Smiles!!
Lions worldwide are known for their service activity
sans limitations. There are numerous examples of how
Lions extend their reach and make services easily
accessible to the needy. When it comes to serving people
in need of health care, outreach is one of the significant
factors that contribute to the actual benefit received by
those who are served.
One important part of human body, which is often
neglected and is uncared for, is the mouth or the Oral
cavity. The misconceptions, myths and ignorance
associated with Dentistry and dental care add further
to the woes. Almost 90% of Indians suffer from dental
diseases and problems. Altered lifestyle and diet have
led to a splurge in dental diseases among children and
adolescents. An unhealthy set of teeth leads to deficient
nutrition, improper speech, bad breath, pain, and also
a lowered self-esteem among the youngsters.
To reach out to the needy and restore their smiles back
to health, Lions Club of Hyderabad East has initiated
the Smiling Schools and Smiling Groups
programmes. These programmes serve schoolchildren,
elderly, rural populations and such other groups, who
are at high risk for dental diseases and for whom dental
services are not easily accessible. Procedures carried
out include, awareness and training about prevention
of dental diseases, Preventive dental care (topical
Fluorides, Sealants, Professional Cleaning, simple
fillings) emergency pain relief, simple extractions,
removable dentures etc.,
A portable /mobile Dental unit, fully equipped for
carrying out above-mentioned procedures has been
purchased, jointly sponsored by the club, and our Past
President Ln. S.K.Kabra and Lion Lady Susheela Kabra.
I have always seen the dental check-up camps and
referral to hospitals for care, as a project with limited
potential, as people fail to turn up for required treatment
due to time, travel and financial constraints. With this
portable/mobile dental unit, we intend to provide dental
care at the campsite itself to add meaning and efficiency
to the service activity.

More blood. More life.
This theme for World Blood Donor Day 2011 reinforces
the urgent need for more people all over the world to
become life-savers by volunteering to donate blood
regularly. Voluntary Blood Donation is the best type
of blood donation where a motivated human being gives
blood in an act of selfless service.
The Beginning: The concept of voluntary blood
donation by donors was not existent in our state in
earlier times. There were no Voluntary Blood Donors
banks in the city and there used to be a shortage of
blood in the hospitals. In this scenario, our club
contemplated on the ways to mitigate the shortage of
availability of different groups of blood.
In 1986, the idea to start a Blood Bank dependent only
on Voluntary Blood Donation was mooted by members
of Lions Club of Hyderabad East and with the
cooperation of Sri. Bhanji Kheraj Family Charitable
Trust this Blood Bank came into existance. The Blood
Bank was inaugurated by the then Honorable Governor
of A.P., Ms. Kumudben Joshi during the president ship
of Lion. Goverdhan Reddy in 1986-87 at Feroz Gandhi
Park, Bank Street, Hyderabad. The Blood Bank was
Chaired efficiently by Lion Amritlal B Nishar for the
first five years and subsequently, it has been chaired
and nurtured by other members. Presently, Lion.
S.K.Kabra is the Chairman.
Activity: Since its establishment, the Blood Bank has
been exclusively conducting voluntary blood donation
camps with the support of various Lions Clubs and
other Institutions from Twin Cities and the adjacent
Districts. Our staff and Doctors earnestly participate
in the camps of voluntary donors arranged by other
NGOs and Social Organizations also. Annually 3500-
4000 bottles of blood are collected by the Blood Bank,
which is then distributed free of cost to the poor and
needy or at Govt. recommended rate to others.
Blood is also issued to the poor/needy in the name of
the Donor, who contributes an amount of INR 850/-
25 YEARS OF LIONS CLUB OF HYDERABAD EAST BHANJI KHERAJ BLOOD BANK
(Govt. recommended rate) per bottle. Philanthropists
are requested to make such donations on their
birthdays, anniversaries etc., According to a recent
notification issued by the Govt. of A.P., 30% of blood
collected from Voluntary Blood Donation Camps should
be given free of cost to Govt. Hospitals. Accordingly,
blood is donated to Govt hospitals at no charge.
The Blood bank is recognized by National AIDS
Control Organization, Govt. Of India under
Modernisatrion programme for Blood banking system.
Healthy Blood is collected with utmost care and
supplied after conducting necessary medical tests to
ensure its safety. Blood Grouping and Rh Typing, Hb
estimation, Malaria parasite, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C,
V.D.R.L, HIV I & II (AIDS) are conducted by ELISA
method on an ultra modern machine.
The Future: GHMC has allotted new premises for
the Blood bank and we shall move into the same within
a couple of months. Efforts are on to further advance
the quality of service by upgrading the facilities and
equipment as well as the general infrastructure.
About Voluntary Blood Donation:
Any person within the age group of 18 - 60 years
with a minimum body weight of 45 kgs, and having
hemoglobin content of 12.5 gm%. can donate blood.
The time required for blood donation is 3-8 minutes.
It is not associated with pain, except for the initial
needle sting.
There are no harmful effects of Blood Donation.
The blood lost is replaced by new blood formed in
the body within 24-48 hours.
The donor can get back to routine work after a rest
of 15-20 minutes.
A healthy individual can again donate blood after
an interval of 3 months.
Blood Donation is a noble, selfless service activity. If
you have not started donating blood, please start doing
so and save lives.
