To: Mea Moore Cc: Corll Morrissey Subject: Re: PESB Update- Form 2A submission- March 2011 I'd like to get on the phone with both of you tomorrow or Friday if possible. As you know, we are planning our alt route plan and our plan to (possibly) work with TFA. While this has been in the works for a while, the details of the potential partnership continue to unfold (sometimes in surprising ways). I want to make sure we are engaging all the challenges now. I am flexible for most of the day on Thursday and some of the day on Friday. Corll if you are working from Seattle we can call Mea from the same place. Thanks for all your help, Patrick On Wed, Mar 30, 2011 at 7:49 AM, Mea Moore <Mea.Moore@k12.wa.us> wrote: Hi Patrick Yes, but we do not codify the year that the candidates are preparing to meet requirements for admission as a "program" per se. Each candidate is assessed using the individualized teacher development plan that you develop. This will determine what they need to do to meet the requirements for admission. For example, some candidates may only need to demonstrate competency through a performance task as they have already passed the WEST tests and have experience as a Para in a Special Ed. classroom (Route 2), while others may need more coursework etc. To require a fixed curriculum or program for every candidate would not meet the intent of Alternative Routes. Typically Alternative Route candidates approach a program in the fall before an Alternative Route cohort is scheduled to begin the following June. It takes approximately 8 months to a year for the career changer to move into an Alt. Rt. program, not only because they have to take and pass the WEST tests, but also because of the requirement of the yearlong mentored internship. The open exit option is available if they have met the competencies for certification and is only allowed after the year (90 day) point. All Route candidates* are required complete a minimum of year in a full time, all day/every day, school based mentored internship with a trained mentor teacher. This requires that the candidate rearrange aspects of their family/home life because, at a minimum, they will be without salary/benefits etc. for year (unless they are Route 4s), and will not be able to work outside of the internship. As I am writing this I realize the information is quite technical, so I would be more than happy to follow up with a phone call if youd like. Just let me know. Thanks Patrick. Mea

*Note: Route 1 requirements are different as they are in a two year program and are also earning a Bachelor of Arts degree. ________________________________________ From: Patrick Sexton [pgsexton@uw.edu] Sent: Tuesday, March 29, 2011 10:14 PM To: Mea Moore Cc: Corll Morrissey Subject: Re: PESB Update- Form 2A submission- March 2011 (sorry, I forgot) And, they officially enter the Alt Route when they have met all of the prereqs including the WEST E. So, do I understand that we might enroll pre-alt-route students into a program that prepares them for official entry into the alt-route program. The alt-route program needs to last a year from the time they enter the official pathway, but if they meet the competencies prior to the end of that year we can exit them from the program and recommend them for their residency cert? For Route 1s, who are earning a BA and are Paras, the profile for admission is adjusted, requiring only the WEST-B. Route 1 candidates must pass the WEST-E before the mentored internship begins in the second year. Your question is one that our Alt. Rt. Programs have addressed before, especially in regard to the Special Education WEST-E. Typically, very few candidates can take and pass the Special Education WEST-E without coursework. Programs have developed prerequisites based on the candidates individualized teacher development plan. Programs use the teacher development plans to create appropriate experiences for pre-Alternative Route candidates to prepare them to take and pass the WEST-E. During this time, they are not considered Alternative Route candidates. They use this time to prepare and pass the WESTE and then are admitted into the one year Alt. Rt. Program with the open exit option. Let me know if this information helps and feel free to call me if you want to discuss this further. Thanks Patrick.
