Asian Coaches Channel | Frequently Asked Questions

Q If I have never played football and want to become a coach what do I need to do? A If you have never played football, you should undertake an Introductory/Grassroots Coaching Course conducted by your local Member Association, which will help you be better prepared to undergo the AFC C Coaching Certificate Course.

Q Can I go directly for the C Coaching Certificate Course? A - Yes, but you must first undergo a pre-requisite theoretical examination as well as fulfil the set criteria for the C Coaching Certificate Course.

Q How much does it cost to participate in AFC Coaching Courses? A You should contact your local Member Association as costs differ from one country to another. However, certain MAs conduct courses free of charge.

Q Is there a minimum age to participate in the AFC C Coaching Certificate Course? A All candidates must be at least 21 years of age.

Q What are the basic requirements to attend the AFC C Coaching Certificate Course? A You must be under 35 years old, physically and medically fit to take part in the practical sessions, and with a playing background in football. However, age exemption is given to candidates who are recommended by their Member Association. Q How long is the C Coaching Certificate course? A The AFC C Coaching Certificate is a 14-day course that breaks down into 37 hours of practical sessions and 48 hours of theoretical sessions. Q What is the highest coaching qualification you can receive in Asia? A The AFC Professional Coaching Diploma is the highest coaching qualification that you can receive in Asia.

Q Can women participate in any of the AFC Coaching courses? A AFC actively encourages women to participate in any of its coaching courses. Certain Member Associations also offer separate courses for women.

Q What is a log book? A A log book is a record of the coaching you have undertaken. When you fill in your log book you should get an official from your club/academy/school to sign it to confirm your coaching record.

Q Why do I need to keep a log book? A AFC requires coaches to keep a record of their coaching activities because it will help determine whether they have fulfilled the criteria to participate in a certain coaching course. For example, if you would like to undertake the AFC B Coaching Certificate Course, you will need to show that you have an AFC C Coaching Certificate, that you have a minimum of two years of coaching experience and that your log book shows that you have done a minimum of 60 hours of coaching.

Q What is the progression for coaches after they have successfully completed their C Coaching Certificate Course? A After successfully completing your C Coaching Certificate Course, you must fulfil the following before being allowed to undergo the B Coaching Certificate Course: 1. You must have completed a minimum of two years of coaching 2. You must have maintained a log book with a minimum of 60 hours of coaching After successfully completing your B Coaching Certificate Course, you must fulfil the following criteria before being allowed to undergo the A Coaching Certificate Course: 1. You must have completed a minimum of one year of coaching 2. You must have maintained a log book with a minimum of 80 hours of coaching

24-05-2011 Coaches Channel FAQ After successfully completing your A Coaching Certificate Course, you must fulfil the following criteria before being allowed to undergo the Professional Coaching Diploma Course: 1. You must be coaching at a professional or elite level 2. You must be medically and physically fit 3. You must be able to participate in the theoretical and practical sessions 4. You must be under 45 years of age 5. You must be literate 6. On Continental Courses English language is compulsory 7. Your must have maintained a log book with a minimum of 100 hours of coaching

Q How can I get information on the courses conducted in my country? A All courses conducted by the AFC Member Associations can be found in the Education Calendar of Courses.

Q What is the language of instruction in the courses? A All courses and assessments are primarily conducted in English, unless organised by the MAs where the prevailing common language shall be used by the National Instructor. All continental and regional courses are conducted solely in English.

Q What is the examination process in the AFC coaching courses? A In all AFC courses, there is always a theoretical and practical examination. As courses advance, there will be additional exams or assignments that the participants are required to complete.

Q What happens if I fail the course? A In the event that a candidate fails in one or more theoretical examinations, he/she will be granted a provisional pass, which means he/she will have to be re-tested. In the practical examinations, however, candidates must pass at least two examinations. If not, they will fail the course and will have to take it again.

Q How can I attend the AFC specialised courses (Conditioning, Futsal and Goalkeeping)? A To attend the AFC Conditioning course, one must have the minimum AFC B Certificate. To attend the AFC Futsal and Goalkeeping courses, one must have the minimum AFC C Certificate.

Q I have attained a coaching licence/certificate issued by a country outside of Asia. Is it equivalent to an AFC coaching certificate? A Only UEFA-approved coaching licences are equivalent to AFC coaching certificates.

Q I am now currently living in another Asian Country. Can I attend AFC coaching courses held in this country? A You can attend the AFC courses in the country of your residence by applying directly to the Member Association.

Q If a coaching course is not available in my country, can I attend a coaching course in another country? A If you wish to attend an AFC coaching course in a country other than your own, you have to apply to your Member Association, which in turn, will contact the host MA.

Q How do I become a coaching instructor? A To become a coaching instructor, you must have the minimum AFC A Coaching Certificate with extensive coaching background. Your Member Association must nominate you to attend the FIFA/AFC Regional Instructors course, which is organised every two years.

Q What is Project Future? A Project Future is a long term coaching and refereeing development programme aimed at producing future elite coaches and referees in Asia. It is initiated by the AFC President Mohamed Bin Hammam as an integral part of his vision for young coaches and referees.

Q How do I become a candidate for Project Future (Coaches)? A To become a candidate for Project Future, you must attend the AFC C Certificate Coaching courses held annually during the AFC U13/U14 Festival of Football.

24-05-2011 Coaches Channel FAQ Football? A Each Member Association is invited to select two young coaches to attend the C Certificate Coaching course. MAs should select young coaches who they believe have the potential to become elite coaches.

Q Are there any age restrictions for the coaches to join Project Future? A Yes, the young coaches must be 30 years old or younger.

Q What other criteria are there for the young coaches to be selected for the Project Future Coach Programme? A The young coaches must: be of Asian nationality be a current or recently retired player have the desire to pursue a career in coaching be physically and medically fit Q What are the benefits of participating in Project Future (Coaches)? A The young coaches who are selected for Project Future (Coaches) will undergo an exclusive, two-year coach education and development programme funded by AFC. Over the two-year period, the young coaches will attend refresher and review courses, receive visits to their home country by their respective Group Manager or local elite instructor, and attend AFC tournaments to observe and analyse international matches and watch selected professional teams train. Successful candidates will also be attached to local clubs. At the end of the two-year period, the young potential elite coaches will be better prepared to start the next stage of their coaching development, the AFC B Certificate course.

Q When did Project Future start? A Project Future started in 2007, when the first batch of young coaches was selected.

Q Can I be a candidate for Project Future (Coaches) if I am currently not coaching a team? A Yes, you can, provided that you fulfil the selection course requirements. All successful candidates for Project Future are required to work with a team in their home country. If you are unable to find a team, AFC and your Member Association can help.

Q Can women join Project Future (Coaches)? A Yes. Project Future is open to both men and women.

Q How much does it cost to join Project Future? A Project Future is a fully-funded coaching and refereeing development programme, sponsored by AFC.

Q If I am selected to join Project Future (Coaches), does that mean I will become an elite coach? A Not necessarily, but it will give you an excellent opportunity to begin your coaching career. It is up to the successful candidates to work hard and to show the desire and commitment to coaching during the two-year programme. At the end of the two years, you will undertake the AFC B Coaching Certificate course, after which you may progress to higher-level coaching courses.
