Environmental Protection
SBMA continues to pursue its environmental protection responsibilities. The Authority has an Ecology Center that studies and monitors the preservation of the Subic Bay's natural resources and wildlife. All development projects are required to submit Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) studies to ensure compliance with existing environmental standards. The Subic Watershed Forest Reserve (SWFR), located at the southern portion of the Zambales Bio geographic Zone, 160 km. by road northwest of Manila, is one of the ten priority sites of the National Integrated Protected Areas System (NIPAS), noted for its high bio diversity and endemism. This lowland diphtheria forest covers approximately 9,800 hectares, 3,000 hectares of which is closed canopy. The forests were protected from over exploitation for more than 50 years while under the jurisdiction of the Americans during the US Naval Base period. The SWFR lies entirely within the metes and bounds of the Subic Bay Freeport Zone (SBFZ). SBMA has administrative jurisdiction over these protected areas under the authority of Republic Act 7227 of 1992, and in a Memorandum of Agreement signed between the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and the SBMA. A wide range of habitats are present in the forest due to the terrain, presence of streams, fringing grasslands and other breaks in the canopy. It is possible to draw an imaginary line through the

rain forest, running water, grassland and mangrove habitats that blend into the marine sea grass and coral reef habitats. These represent the major habitats of the tropics. The preliminary results of the forest bio diversity survey revealed 745 plant species. Three of which are endangered while four others are potentially threatened. Hence, the urgency of preserving the Subic Forest is highlighted. Ecologically and economically important tree species such as White Lauan, Apitong, Guijo, Palosapis are most dominant in Subic forest. A rattan palm species previously found only in Mt. Arayat was discovered. At the southwest portion of the reserve is a well maintained network of paved roads which links two piers to a complex of 6 groups of earth-covered, concrete ammunition bunkers formerly known as the Naval Magazine. These bunker groups are enclosed in fences. It is linked to the rest of the Freeport Zone by a two-lane road intersected by a narrower road leading to the municipality of Morong, Bataan. This area has been reserved for low-impact, eco and adventure tourism oriented development. The Subic Bay Marine Exploratorium project is taking shape. The Camayan Wharf is now home to Subic Bay Ocean Adventure, the first and the most amazing attraction in the country exposing some of the world's most attractive sea mammals like dolphins, false killer whales and sea lions in their natural habitat. The western side of Grande and Chiquita Islands contains the highest coral cover in the bay with up to 75% of which are living. There are 75 species of fish present in Subic Bay. Important reef fish species comprises 96.25%. The world's rare and endangered Olive Ridley turtle and Hawksbill dwell in Subic Bay. Six species of seagrasses are growing in the marine preserved areas of Triboa and Ilanin Bays. Eco tourism has tremendous potential given the variety of flora and fauna and the presence of streams, waterfalls and trail systems. Eco tour attractions are plentiful How to get to Subic from Manila By Car ( Diver's Network Car service) For US $55 a car and driver will whisk you through the Manila madness, onto the expressway, through San Fernando and onto Zambales and Subic. This is a 2 to 2 1/2 hours drive depending on your arrival time and Manila traffic. International Airport

The Subic Bay International Airport has a regular direct international scheduled and chartered flights. Far Eastern Air Transport provides international scheduled flights to Taipei and Kaohsiung Taiwan on Sundays, Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Air Asia operates three times a week to Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur, Kuching, Subang) while Dragon Air operates chartered flights to Hong Kong once a week. The China Southern Airline flies twice a week to Shenzhen, China. By Air A 3 passenger seaplane can take you Manila-Subic or Subic-Manila. By Bus The least expensive way is to take a taxi to Pasay (pronounced PASS-EYE) bus terminal. Here Victory Liner busses leave every hour until 10 at night for Olongapo City. The taxi will cost you about $3.00. Again this depends on the Taxi driver, don't count on the meter working. For about another $2-$3 you get a clean, (fairly) safe air-conditioned ride complete with a movie. The last Air-conditioned bus leaves for Olongapo about 8:00 at night. After that you have to take a regular bus. These can be packed and very uncomfortable. The trip by bus is about 3-4 hours. Once you arrive at the Victory Liner terminal in Olongapo look for the jeepneys to take you to your hotel. By Ferry The ferry service is called the Mt. Samat Express and they use a Supercat 6 called OK Ka Ferry. It leaves from the Philippine Cultural Centre (PCC Bldg) on Roxas Boulevard and goes to Orion in Bataan. It is but a 50 minute crossing to the Bataan peninsula. Once there a transportation desk can get you a van to Subic. Departures times are listed below, and run basically every hour and a half during daylight hours. It is about a 50 min. trip and costs about P180. If it is stormy weather they will not run. If you're already in the Subic area and you need to go to Manila and your business is in the Ermita, Binondo, Pasay, US Embassy area you will need to drive to Orion. They have secure day or overnight parking. Again the ferries do not operate in bad weather. Same travel time and price as Manila to Subic and you arrive at the ferry terminal across from the Cultural Centre on Roxas Blvd. Taxi's are right outside in a secure area. Ferry Times

Puerto Galera
About 4 to 5 hours away from Manila is Puerto Galera. It is a string of beaches located on the northwest side Mindoro Island. Composed of Coco Beach, White Beach, Sabang Beach, Big & Small Lalaguna & Tamaraw Beach. Puerto Galera is a haven for Filipinos & Foreigners alike. The cost of getting there, the accommodation, food and drinks are relatively cheap compared to Boracay or Palawan. On a tight budget, a weekend retreat for two can cost as little as $100. And that includes transportation from Manila, a room and food. White Beach on is the longest and widest beach in Puerto Galera. It is a bit laid-back compared to Sabang but Sabang is smaller but livelier because it has more bars, shops, restaurants and discos. Sabang also boast of a floating bar in the middle of the bay where local and imported drinks are served. But both Sabang & White Beach have an active nightlife although one need not stay at one beach alone, try beach hopping when your there. You can transfer from Sabang to Small Lalaguna by foot. And in between the two beaches, there is a cozy bar on the cliff called "The Point" it has a nice view of the ocean and is open until 2 a.m. The other beaches at Puerto Galera can be reached by tricycle, jeep or pump boat. It is a common practice to rent a cottage at one resort and hop at different resorts and beaches during the day and at even at night.

You can do just about everything for your total holiday enjoyment at Puerto Galera. Day activities are usually swimming, boating, strolling, hiking, Scuba diving, snorkeling, island hopping, jet skiing, beach volleyball and of course sun bathing! One can also hire a guide to trek the mountain at the backdrop. There is also the Ponderosa Golf Club is located up in the mountains - 600 meters above sea level, and the view is unforgettable. The beautiful view of Puerto Galera and the beaches is breathtaking. Another interesting place to go while in Puerto Galera is the Tamaraw Falls. It is very easy to go to, just take a jeepney ride towards San Teodoro town and ask the jeep driver to drop you off at Tamaraw Falls. The falls is just meters from the road. And if you are the adventurous type, go jungle trekking through the mountains and see the Mangyan tribes people living in the jungle and you are lucky, you might get the rare chance to see the Tamaraw, a wild buffalo in the forest of Mindoro. How to get to Puerto Galera: To get to Puerto Galera from Manila you can get a bus to the Port of Batangas (about 3 hour trip). Almost all major bus lines in Manila have regular trips going to the Port of Batangas. From the port, the fastest way to any beach in Puerto Galera is to take a "banca" ride (outrigger boat) directly to your beach of choice. You can also take the early morning Ro-Ro (roll on-roll off) ferryboat (2 1/2 hours trip) once a day or the speed boats that leave the port several times a day (more often during peak season -the schedules change depending on the demand). But the "RoRo" and the bigger boats dock on the Puerto Gallera pier and you have to take a jeepney ride to your choice of beach or take another "banca" ride to your choice of beach. So if you are not afraid of small boats, take the "banca" direct from the Port of Batangas to your choice of beach at Puerto Galera. Another way to get to Puerto Gallera is to catch a bus leaving everyday at the City State Tower Hotel in Ermita, Manila (tel. # 0917 694 6918) the bus takes you to the Port of Batangas where a catamaran Si-Kat waits to ferry passengers to Puerto Gallera. There is also a bus leaving Royal Palm Hotel (tel 02/526 2566) in Ermita, Manila at 8 a.m.

Corregidor Island
Corregidor is a tadpole shaped island on the mouth of Manila Bay. When the Philippines was yet a colony of Spain, Corregidor served as a fortress; an early warning outpost to warn Manila of any hostile ships; a customs outpost; and a correctional (prison). Because of the corrective effect of hard labor on prisoners, the island was named Corregidor, from the Spanish word "corregir" meaning the corrector. Corregidor is also known as "the rock" because of its rocky landscape and heavy fortifications. Corregidor island is approximately 4 kilometers long, 1.5 kilometers at its widest and a total area of approximately 3 square miles. At the tip of the tail, 2 kilometers south, lies Caballo island. Both Corregidor and Caballo islands are part of the province of Cavite. Corregidor History In 1898, after almost 400 years of colonization, the Philippines was ceded by Spain to the United States after payment of US$20 million. Soon after, the Americans used Corregidor as an army post and named the it, Fort Mills in honor of Brig. Gen. Samuel M. Mills. The Americans built bomb-shelters, concrete emplacements, a hospital and trails around the island. In 1922 construction of the Malinta Tunnel started to protect military installations

and wares in case of war. In addition, 56 Coastal guns, 13 anti-aircraft artillery batteries and 10 searchlights was installed. In 1941, hours after Japan bombed Pearl Harbor, the Japanese invaded the Philippines. Corregidor served as the last resistance point of the retreating Filipino and American forces fighting the Japanese. Gen. Douglas MacArthur used Corregidor island as a base for the Allied forces form 1941 to 1942. Corregidor also served as the temporary shelter for the government of President Manuel L. Quezon and his family for two months (December 24, 1941 to February 19, 1942) prior to the eventual exile of the Philippine Commonwealth government to the United States. After the fall of Bataan to on April 9, 1942 to the Japanese, Corregidor surrendered after holding out for 27 days.

Corregidor Today Today, Corregidor is a historical site and a tourist destination. The island is divided into sections, the "head" is called the "Topside". This is the main part of Corregidor where the headquarters, barracks, war memorial, lighthouse, Eternal Flame, parade grounds, golf course and all the major emplacements are located here. Then there is the "Middleside", where the campsite, aviary, bird park and some ruins are located. And the tail end of Corregidor island is called the "Bottomside". Vigan City, Ilocos Sur

About 400 kilometers from Manila is the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Vigan. It is the capital city of Ilocos Sur located on the west coast of northern Luzon. One can see precious remnants of old Spanish architecture throughout the center of the city. Established in the 16th century, Vigan is the best-preserved example of a planned Spanish colonial town in Asia with a unique European atmosphere. Several museums exist for the many national heroes that were born here. Vigan is the oldest surviving Spanish colonial city in the Philippines. The name Vigan was derived from "Biga", a giant taro plant that grows abundantly along the banks of the Mestizo River. Places of Interest: Old Vigan Colonial Houses the ancestral houses were built mostly by rich Chinese traders. These great big houses are made of thick brick walls and plastering with red clay. Tile roofs are made to survive earthquakes. The Mestizo district where more than a hundred houses line side by side along Calle Crisologo. St. Pauls Cathedral - built in 1790-1800 by the Augustinians, this impressive Baroque cathedral has most of its interior walls well preserved. The 12 altars and 3 naives only enhances the church beauty and grandeur. The bell tower is octagonal and is located 10 meters south of the cathedral. It is a place not to be missed when visiting Vigan. Palacio de Arzobispado built in 1783, it is the official residence of the Archbishop of Nueva Segovia. The palace was the headquarters of Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo. Included in the palace is the Museo Nueva Segovia with a collection of paintings, manuscripts and religious articles accumulated through the centuries.

Burgos National Museum. - the museum building is the ancestral house of Padre Jose Burgos. One of the museums best feature are the paintings of Esteban Villanueva depicting the 1807 Basi Revolt. The dioramas of local historical events is worth the visit. Included in the collections are antiques, manuscripts and other priceless items. There is a Tourist Information Center in Vigan to help visitors. And if you want to take a break, there are beaches to go to just a few minutes away from the town. A good time to visit Vigan is during the town fiesta. Celebrated for one whole week -concluding on January 25 to commemorate the conversion of the apostle, St. Paul. The fiesta is marked by street parades, beauty contest and variety shows on the town plaza. During the Holy Week, local and foreign tourist come to Vigan to see the religious processions of the antique and life sized statues mounted on elaborately designed carrozas that are paraded on the streets of Vigan.

To get to Vigan City from Manila, you can get a bus or take a plane to Laoag City and take a bus ride to Vigan. There are many places to stay. Banaue Rice Terraces

Banaue rice terraces has been described as the eighth wonder of the world. Carved out of the hillside by Ifugao tribes people 2000 to 3000 years ago without the aid of machinery to provide level steps where the natives plant rice. And they are still in use today. In 1995, they were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Banaue rice terraces stretch like stepping stones to the sky - some reaching an altitude of 1500m (4920ft). It is considered as one of mankind's greatest engineering feat. If the terraces were laid end to end, they would stretch half way around the world. One of the major appeal of Banaue rice terraces to the local and international tourist are the many hiking trails in the area. There are many young locals, mostly college students who serve as guides. But with or without a guide, you will find the friendliness and warmth of the Ifugao people endearing. The Banaue Rice Terraces are now showing signs of erosion. Some areas needs maintenance as some of the new generation Ifugaos are migrating to the cities looking for better opportunities. That given, the terraces still never fails to awe the traveller. Aside from Banaue rice terraces, nearby are 4 other similar Ifugao terraces: BATAD rice terraces. Also located in Banaue, it is home to the spectacular tiered, amphitheatre-shaped terraces. MAYOYAO rice terraces is similarly situated in Banaue. The organic Ifugao rice called Tinawon, in red and white variety, is harvested here in abundance. HAPAO rice terraces. Its stone-walled rice terraces date back to 650 AD and is located in Hungduan, where Napulawan terraces can also to be found. KIANGAN rice terraces. It is home to two famous rice terraces sites namely: Nagacadan and Julungan, known for their size and visual impact.

Banaue rice terraces, although a bit far from Manila is one of the most awesome destinations in the Philippines. Visitors never regret spending time and resources to see its beauty and grandeur. One cannot but ponder how the Ifugaos made it all using just their bare hands... How to get to Banaue Rice Terraces: From Manila there are air-conditioned buses that go straight to Banaue, The trip takes about 9 hours. The Dangwa Transit have daily trips to Banaue Rice Terraces. Their terminals are located along Dimasalang St., Sampaloc, Manila and Aurora Boulevard, Cubao, Q.C. (Tel# 731-2879 & 410-1991). Also plying the Banaue route is Auto Bus (Tel# 735-8098) with terminals at Espaa Blvd corner G. Tolentino St., Manila. The bus leaves at 10 PM daily and arrives at about 7AM. From Baguio City, there are also buses going to the Banaue Rice Terraces. The trip will pass through the provinces of Bulacan, Nueva Ecija, Nueva Vizcaya then to Ifugao. Accommodation is no problem, there are several inns in town like the Banaue View Inn, the Banaue Hotel and other lodging houses with reasonable rates. Some private homes also accept tourist and transients for a lesser charge.

How To Tour Sagada

Most (if not all) of the visitors to Sagada would brave the long drive or commute to experience the natural beauty of the town. Of course, most of these natural wonders would require walking and navigating through not-so-familiar hike trails and paths. Be a responsible and smart backpacker by researching about the sites that you want to visit. If thats not possible, ask the other tourists and travelers that you encounter during your stay. The ultimate hassle is always finding out that part of your original plan had been messed up some but never worry, personal experience says theres a solution rests just around the bend. And quite literally, too. About a hundred or so meters from the Sagada Municipal Hall and down the street where the fabled Yoghurt House restaurant is, is a four storey structure which served as a great lodging alternative for me and my companions. Cheaper than most inns in the vicinity, too, by a few hundred bucks. Thats George Guest House to you, weary traveller. What to expect: Private rooms or rooms for share, modest sized beds and extra mattresses with clean beddings, a convenience store just downstairs, and hot water boiled for you (for a minimal fee of P30 last Ive been there) should you find the shower water too cold. We got the rooftop ala penthouse room and it fit five of us comfortably. Whats best about the rooftop location is the veranda overlooking Sagadas foggy mountains peaks and pine tree-laden green surroundings. It has been open for business for less than two years but it has definitely become one of the more popular places to stay in Sagada. Mary Daoas, a retired school teacher, owns and manages her two-story lodge hands-on and you could almost always find her in the vicinity at any given time. When they say residential, they really mean it. You can invade the kitchen to cook your own food or even use the clothesline after washing your clothes. It really feels like living at home. You could choose to stay in a room with a private toilet and bath or stay in a dormitory room next to a communal toilet and bath. Private rooms go for as low as 250 pesos a night while the dorm accommodation is slightly cheaper at 200. There is a common area per floor where guests could watch TV or interact with other people staying in the lodge.

The private room were we occupied in the lodge have a good ambiance,clean and well ventilated parin(although malamig sa sagada),may common kitchen din po dun for the occupants to use kahit nasa underground pa kami ^-^. Tita Mary is very accomodating to us even we encounter few problems regarding reservation of rooms (nagpareserve kami for 8-9 people)dapat 9 kami pero 4 lang kaming unang nakarating nung april 9, at di rin makakasunod agad ang mga friends namin na supposedly will go to sagada on Good Friday kasi we discover na walang byahe ang mga bus going to sagada that day pala. In the end nasolusyonan naman yung problem. The lodge provide many kitchen utensils, so the occupants can cook their own food. 101.I went there this just Sept 6, 2009. I had a wonderful experience in Sagada and to add it

being more memorable was the hospitality of our hostess TITA MARY as we fondly called her from the Residential House (the blue house). Though we took a longer route incidentally via Banaue it was worth it. It was raining in Manila and we boarded the Banaue trip via Florida Bus Line in Forbes across UST. The trip Manila to Banaue was P435/hd and we were a bit a minute late when we arrived at the terminal. Since it rained also in the North we hiked our way to one landslide blackage and luckily enough we were fetched by a van driver and negotiated and haggled our way to Bontoc but it costs us P1,500 (which was a mistake we did). But one benefit was he led us to the Banaue rice terraces and had our pics taken. In fairness he offered us a tour trip within Banaue but we declined due to time constraint though the invitation is too inviting to resist. After 3hours of trip to Bontoc we were dropped at the BONTOC-SAGADA jeepney ride which was P50 fare and a 45 min ride. Then upon arriving at Sagada luckily enough with the heavy bags we brought we were dropped off in fron of the Lodge because if it had not then we could have ourselves rolled over down the road with the bags to Tita Marys place. Maybe lady luck was on our side when we had to meet 2 guys Dennis and Jury who had stayed and waited for us to arrive to tag along to Sumaguing Cave in the afternoon which is practical money wise for us all. And at long last we met Tita Mary who has been monitoring our trip and became our textmate along the way. A very charming and english spokeing woman at that. Because people there are more comfortable speaking English with tourists and they are trained to be and they have sunday schools for that take note.

The acomodation was supposed to be P250 if we use the tub but we opted not so we were only charged for P200/day (not bad right?). After a quiet refreshing routine and taking our lunch at the Yoghurt House we went back to met the guys to register ourselves (I am with Arcie who celebrated the birthaday that day at the cave) at the Municipal Hall and find us our tour guide Alfred (highly recommended) which costs us P500 for the four of us all.. And when it was the IT(Sumaguing Cave) we were on the part of resigning to the idea and forget the whole thing of us entering the Sumaguing Cave because of the darkness in front of us but we found the courage and the strength from the guys we have around. We were just saying that this is a waste if we will not push the idea to enter the cave and it was so overwhelming of what we experienced as we struggle down the slopes and see the journey to the center of the earth for us. We never regret that we did and after all the trail that we successfully surpassed we can say.Arcie and ISurvived Sagada.I felt it was the climax of it all.. Baguio to Sagada via GL Bus which will give you between 12 to 13 hrs travel time.Tita Mary of the Lodge is very accomodating and makes sure you reach the place through her cell. Travel: Going to Sagada From Baguio

Sagada is about 400 kilometers north of the Philippine capital of Manila. It is in the middle of the Luzon landmass and is nestled in a valley along the Cordillera Mountain Range. There are two major routes to Sagada one on the western and more developed side via Baguio City and the other along the east via Banaue. Manila to Baguio Victory Liner is the bus line of choice to Baguio City. The company offers almost eighty trips a day from its five bus stations in Metro Manila. The two biggest stations are the ones in Pasay (convenient for those in the Pasay-Manila-Makati area) and Cubao (convenient for those from Quezon City). A bus leaves every hour on the hour. You can call 02-833-5019 to 20 (Pasay) and 02-727-4534 (Cubao) for ticket inquiries and reservations. Unless its peak season (April May), its very likely that you wont need a reservation. You may simply go to the station and buy the tickets there for the next bus. Price: 460 Php ~12 USD Schedule: Every hour Duration: 6-8 hours. If you leave Manila late at night (around 10 PM, you can arrive in Baguio

before 5 AM). Traffic jams in Manila and other cities along the way can dramatically change your time of arrival. Stops: The bus stops twice at provincial stations for restroom breaks. The stations also have concessionaire stands for light snacks and drinks. Tips
To maximize your time, leave Manila during late night. This allows you to evade the heavy rush hour traffic and ensures that youll get the first trip out of Baguio to Sagada. Instead of buying food and drinks from the concessionaires, stock up on snacks before boarding the bus. The prices are a bit jacked up so youll end up saving more if you come prepared.

From Baguio To Sagada Upon arriving at Baguio, you may take a cab to the Dangwa Bus Station. The cab fare will cost about 40-50 Php (~1+ USD). Locate the Lizardo Transit station facing the station, its on the LEFT side. They have a small ticket booth where you could buy tickets minutes before the bus leaves. The first trip Price: 220 Php ~ 5.50 USD Schedule: First bus leaves at 630AM. The last bus leaves at 1 PM. Trip Duration: 6-7 hours (The roads are pretty rough) Stops: The bus makes two stops. There are restrooms and food stalls in the vicinity as well. SAGADA BAGUIO (for the way back) Schedule: First bus leaves at 5 AM. Last bus leaves at 1 PM. One bus every hour, on the hours. Tips
Be prepared. Take medication for motion sickness if necessary. The buses are not air-conditioned and even if the region is known for cold weather, the sun could prove to be quite an adversary at mid-day. Dont forget to apply sunblock.

Planning Your Itinerary 101

We at Visit Sagada believe that to truly enjoy your stay in Sagada, your trip should have a good balance between adventurous spontaneity and a rough idea of what to do formulated through research (in your case: reading this website ) During the early months of this site, most of the people were happy with figuring out things for themselves, but more and more now, visitors seem to be more open to the idea of having somebody else do an itinerary for them. To accomodate those who are probably scared of venturing into the deep end during their first time up there, we have come up with this easy-to-follow guide on how to plan your activities. This should be the first question that you should answer before planning the rest of your activities in Sagada. Keep in mind that a round figure like three days will not translate as three days in actual waking hours. Heres why: If you were to take the Manila-Baguio-Sagada bus route, the earliest time you could arrive in Sagada would be 12 NOON because the first bus leaves the station at around 5:30 AM. Keep in mind that this will only be feasible if you can leave Manila the night before. This means that your first day isnt really a full day you lose a significant chunk of potential tour time to travel. Once you factor in the things you have to do after checking in (lunch, unpacking etc.), its likely that you will only have three to four hours of sunshine left to do whatever you want to do. Keep in mind that you are also coming off a very taxing half-day journey on bus through the rough and winding roads of the Cordillera mountains. Some people (like myself) may prefer resting during Day 1 and just focus on the touring the next day. If you can muster the strength to do some touring for the afternoon, you may try any of the following by going to the town hall and inquiring at the tourism desk:
The sightseeing package is a medley of three points of interest that are reachable within a few minutes hike of each other. You may choose three places to go to and the tour will probably take 3-4 hours depending on when where you choose to go. Echo Valley is probably among the most popular of these sites. Its fairly easy to go to and it will surely be a hit for younger travelers. Go to the caves! Sagada is famous for its cave system so no one should ever leave the town before checking out Sumaguing cave. Its a twenty minute walk from the town center its a fairly easy hike up the road. You will also see nice views of the Sagada Rice Terraces and traditional village houses called dap-ays along the way. The normal spelunking route takes 2-3 hours to finish. After a day of traveling, most people would probably want to relax. If youre with me in that regard then I strongly suggest that you visit Bokong Falls (also known as Small Falls). The falls is situated next to rice paddies and though it doesnt really dazzle you with the way it looks, it sure makes up for it with sheer adrenaline potential. You can jump off the falls highest point into a cold deep natural pool below. Theres nothing like a nice cold dip that could rejuvenate your road-weary body, right?

LESSON #1: DAY ONE HAS A VERY TIGHT TIME WINDOW. DONT EXPECT TO DO A LOT OF THINGS DURING THIS DAY. PRIORITIES In my opinion, visitors should prioritize two points of interest while in Sagada the Bomod-ok Falls (Big Falls) and the Sumaguing-Lumiang cave system. Both would require a considerable amount of time and energy to get to so it will be wise to reserve a day for each site. Ive heard of people doing both in a single day but those people were hardly comparable to your average human being (haha). To be on the safe side, stick to one for one day.
Bomod-ok Falls / Big Falls There are two routes to the falls ones a bit easy (a leisurely 90 minute hike along paved bridges) while the other one is a 2-3 hours traverse of rice terraces that would have you balancing for your life!

You might want to rent a van for this since the barangay that has jurisdiction of the falls is already at the outskirts of Sagada. The water is quite cold and deep. The rocks and boulder near the falls are also slippery. Be extra careful. Cave Connection Again, the caves are around 20 minutes away from the town. The traverse from one mouth of the cave to the other would take 3-6 hours depending on the skill level of the spelunker. This would require scaling cave formations, a bit of rope climbing, rapelling, crawling and even a little bit of swimming. You will get wet!

These two activities will require one day each with the afternoons reserved for walking around town, meditation, buying souvenirs or getting a massage. I really think that an important part of a trip to Sagada is to feel its natural serenity that lulls you into sitting back and just relaxing. Sagada isnt all about extreme eco-adventures. Its also about communing with nature and the alien landscape of the Cordilleras that urbanites cant fathom at first. LESSON #2: Realistically speaking, you need 4 days in Sagada. But once you think about it, four days in Sagada is more like three days. The first day doesnt start until 12 NN. The last day can only last until 1PM (the time the last bus for Baguio leaves). How To Tour Sagada

Most (if not all) of the visitors to Sagada would brave the long drive or commute to experience the natural beauty of the town. Of course, most of these natural wonders would require walking and navigating through not-so-familiar hike trails and paths. Be a responsible and smart backpacker by researching about the sites that you want to visit. If thats not possible, ask the other tourists and travelers that you encounter during your stay.

If youre a first time traveler, youre definitely going to benefit from having a tour guide that could give directions and pertinent information about the places you want to see. To arrange a guided tour, make your way to the municipal hall near the intersection of Sagadas three main roads. The tourism desk is to your left immediately upon entering the building. There, you would see the list of possible destinations and the standard rates for each. All travelers are charged 10 php (~0.25 USD) as environmental fee. There are two types of destinations in Sagada one group consists of the sites that are in close proximity to the town center and is relatively accessible and the other is composed of destinations that require more than 2 hours of trekking to reach. The easier-to-reach destinations are commonly lumped under the Sightseeing package. These sites include:
Bokong Falls - also known as a Small Falls. Though not so majestic in height, the pool still a good thrill for those willing to jump from its natural 20-foot platform. Echo Valley Despite being very close to the town center, Echo Valley exudes a very serene atmosphere. As the name suggests, the valleys topography is perfect for propagating echoes. Kiltepan Viewpoint Underground River Demang Village Hanging Coffins Lumiang Burial Cave Lake Danum

To avail of the Sightseeing package, simply pick three of the sites on the list and your guide will be the one to plot out the most convenient route for your party. The rate is 400 pesos for a group of four people. The second group consists of sites that would require more time and effort to reach. This includes:
Bomod-ok Falls (Big Falls) Sumaguing Cave Sumaguing-Lumiang Cave Connection Mt. Ampacao

These destinations would require at least half a day for you to enjoy. The rates can be seen on their respective pages (just follow the links). Since some of these places may be too far too walk (e.g. Big Falls is about 3-4 hours away by foot), it would be advantageous to hire a van through the tourism desk as well.
