SYNOPSIS ENGINEERING MECHANICS stresses on theoretical knowledge in statics and dynamics. This course provides students with fundamental understanding of forces and equilibrium, resultants, equilibrium of a rigid body and structural analysis. This course also covers an introduction to dynamics, kinematics of particles and kinetics of particles. LEARNING OUTCOMES Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:1. apply the principles of mathematics and physics to solve quantitative problems correctly 2. recognize correctly the relevancy of principles of force equilibrium and its importance in the analysis of structural system 3. explain clearly the concept of dynamics, kinetics and kinematics for particle and rigid body SUMMARY (45 LECTURE : 00 PRACTICAL)

RTA BASIC CONCEPTS IN STATICS (03 : 00) This topic introduces basic concept in statics, scalars and vectors, Newtons Laws, units and limits . FORCE VECTOR (05 : 00) This topic introduces vector operations, force vector directed along a line, dot product and concurrent force system. EQUILIBRIUM (05 : 00) This topic discusses equilibrium in two dimensions, free body diagram, equilibrium of a particle, equilibrium condition. equilibrium in three dimensions, equilibrium conditions. STRUCTURES (06 : 00) This topic introduce the concept of principle trusses and real structures, methods of joints, methods of sections, space trusses, frames and machines. BASIC CONCEPTS IN DYNAMICS (03 : 00) This topic deals with fundamental and application of dynamics. It also covers the general aspects, the importance of dynamics, relationships between linear and angular velocity as well as linear and angular acceleration. KINEMATICS OF PARTICLES (11 : 00) This topic confines mainly on rectilinear motion of particles. It covers the position, velocity and acceleration motion of particle. It also involves solve graphically the rectilinear problems.

KINETICS OF PARTICLES (12 : 00) This topic deals with kinetics of particles. It focuses to three sections, first concentrates on force, mass and acceleration. It covers Newtons Second Law, equation of motion and solution of problems, rectilinear motion. Second, concentrates on work and energy. It covers work, kinetic energy and potential energy. Third, concentrates on impulse and momentum. It covers linear impulse and linear momentum, angular impulse and angular momentum.

TYPES OF ASSESSMENT The course assessment is carried out in two sections: i. Continuous Assessment (CA) ii. Final Examination (FE) The percentage ratio of FE to CA should follow the guideline stated in the Arahan-Arahan Peperiksaan dan Kaedah Penilaian which is approved by the Lembaga Peperiksaan dan Penganugerahan Sijil/Diploma Politeknik.

CONTINUOUS ASSESSMENT (CA): [ The total score of the CA components will be converted to the determined CA percentage ] Continuous assessment is carried out throughout the semester and comprises the followings: a. Quiz ( minimum 4 ) 20% 40% b. Test ( minimum 2 ) c. Other Assessment Task i. End- of Chapter (minimum 2) 40% [ Assessment Task above (ab) to be executed during Lecture/Practical/ Tutorial hour ] FINAL EXAMINATION (FE): Final examination is carried out at the end of the semester.
