Introduction Purpose The purpose of the Specification is to provide installation requirements for use by persons involved with the installation, examination, and testing of high density polyethylene piping (HDPE) systems.

1.2

Scope This Specification applies to installation of HDPE piping for use in refinery and petrochemical processing plants. This Practice applies to both General Purpose HDPE piping in accordance with ASME B31.3 and Factory Mutual (FM) Approved piping in accordance with NFPA 24.

1.3

Order of Precedence For General Purpose piping, in case of conflict between this Specification and the drawings, the drawings take precedence. For FM Approved piping, in case of conflict between this Practice and NFPA 24, NFPA 24 takes precedence.

5.3

Heat Fusion Training Services If requested, the Manufacturer shall train the contractors installation personnel, as well as any inspectors representing the owner, in the Manufacturers recommended butt fusion and saddle fusion procedures.

5.4

Butt Fusion of Unlike Wall Thicknesses (General Purpose piping) 5.4.1 Butt fusion shall be performed between pipe ends or between pipe ends and fit ting outlets of like outside diameter and wall thickness. Butt fusion joining between pipe ends with like outside diameters and unlike wall thicknesses or between pipe ends and fitting outlets with like outside di ameters and unlike wall thicknesses is permitted if the difference in standard dimension ratio (SDR) of the two pieces is two SDRs or less (i.e., a component with a SDR of 11 can be joined to a component with a SDR of 15.5). Transitions between like outside diameters and unlike wall thicknesses greater than two standard dimension ratios (SDRs) shall be made with a transition nipple (a short length of the heavier wall pipe with one end machined to the lighter wall) or by mechanical means (i.e., a transition piece is required when joining a component with an SDR of 11 to a component with an SDR of 17).

5.4.2

5.4.3

5.5

Butt Fusion of Unlike Wall Thicknesses (FM Approved piping) 5.5.1 Butt fusion shall be performed between pipe ends or between pipe ends and fitting outlets of like class. Butt fusion jointing between Class 150 and Class 200 shall not be permitted. Transitions between Class 150 and Class 200 shall be made with flange connec tions.

5.5.2 5.5.3

5.6

Mechanical Joining (General Purpose piping) 5.6.1 HDPE pipe and fittings may be joined together or joined to other materials by either flanged connections (flange adapters and back-up rings) or mechanical couplings designed for joining HDPE pipe or for joining HDPE pipe to another material. Mechanical couplings shall be fully pressure-rated and fully thrust- restrained such that when installed in accordance with Manufacturers recommendations, a longitu dinal load applied to the mechanical coupling will cause the pipe to yield before the mechanical coupling disjoins.

shape of the fusion beads indicate if a proper joint has been made. 7.2 The width of the double bead shall be 2 to 1-1/2 times the height of the bead from the pipe surface. The double bead shall be uniform in size and shape all around the joint. The depth of the V-groove between the beads shall not be more than half the bead height. When butt fusion is between pipe and a molded fitting, the fitting-side bead may ex hibit some shape irregularities that are caused by the molding process. A slightly ir regular fitting-side bead shall not be cause for rejection provided that the pipe-side bead is properly shaped and the V-groove between the beads is correct. This only ap plies to molded fittings and not to fittings that are fabricated from pipe shapes. The above visual inspection criteria apply to both outside fusion beads and inside fu sion beads. Inside fusion beads shall be examined when accessible, such as at flange adapters, the first fission of an elbow, and the first and second fusion of a tee.

Testing Butt Fusion Testing 8.1.1 8.1.2 For each fusion operator, the first fusion of each day shall be a trial fusion. The trial fusion shall be allowed to cool completely, then fusion test straps shall be cut out. Welds shall be tested by cutting a 12-inch wide ring section of HDPE pipe with the examination and a bend test. The width of the test bend strips is proportional to the pipe wall thickness. If the pipe wall thickness is less than 1.0 inch, a 1.0-inch wide test strip is recommended. If the pipe wall thickness is greater than 1.0 inch, the width of the test strip shall be equal to the wall thickness. 8.1.4 The cross section of the weld will be examined visually, and shall contain no voids or discontinuities.

8.1.3

8.1.5 a. b.

The bend test consists of the followings steps: Each test strip is clamped in a vise 1.0 inch under the weld bead. A steel extension pipe of appropriate diameter and length is then slipped over the free end of the specimen to 1.0 inch above the weld bead.

c.

The bend test is performed by bending the test specimen a minimum of 90 o in the di rection that places the concave interior surface/root of the pipe wall/weld in tension. No failures in the butt fusion area are permitted in all four test strips. If the fusion fails at the joint, a new trial fusion shall be made, cooled completely, and tested. Butt fusion of pipe to be installed shall not commence until a trial fission has passed the bend test.

8.1.6

8.1.7

8.2

Pressure Testing 8.2.1 All joints (mechanical, flanged, and fusion) shall be inspected for leakage during the test. Heat fusion joints must be completely cooled before pressure testing. The temperature of the test medium and the pipe test section should be the same, and if possible, should be less than 100F (38C). Before applying test pressure, ample time shall be allowed for the test medium and the pipe test section to equalize. At temperatures above 100F (38C), test pressure must be reduced. Test pressure may be limited by valves, or other lower pressure rated components. Such components may not withstand the required test pressure. They should be either removed or isolated from the test section to avoid possible damage or failure of these devices. For any test pressure from 1 to 1-1/2 times the system operating design pressure, the total test time (including initial pressurization, initial expansion, and time at test pres sure) must not exceed 8 hours. If the test is not completed due to leakage, equipment failure, etc., depressurize the test section, then allow it to relax for at least 8 hours before bringing the test section up to test pressure again. The preferred testing medium is clean water. The test section should be completely filled with liquid. Trapped air must be purged. While the test section is filling, venting at high points may be necessary to purge air pockets. The test procedure consists of initial expansion and test phases. During the initial ex pansion phase, the test section is pressurized to the test pressure, and enough makeup liquid is added each hour for 3 hours to return to test pressure. The test phase follows immediately for 2 hours. At the end of the test time, the test section is returned to test pressure by adding a measured amount of liquid. If the amount of makeup liquid added does not exceed the following values, leakage is not indicated.
