CHAPTER III RESEARCH METHOD

A. Research Design This research used classroom action research (CAR). The research will be conducted in MTs Nurussalam Lassa-Lassa in July-September 2011-2012 academic year. 1. Research Procedure In this Classroom Action Research (CAR), the observer used the CAR principle to collect the data. The research was divided into two cycles with each cycle consist of four phases. Cycle I Cycle I consist of planning, action, observation and reflection as follows: 1. Planning In this phase, the observer made/prepared a. The lesson plan after getting the problem in the class by applying bookworm game b. Instrument evaluation that will be used in classroom action research cycle c. Observation sheet

2. Acting a. The teacher entered the class and introduced the material to the class. b. The teacher explained about how to play the bookworm game.

c. The students play game by linking alphabet has been random become a word. d. The teacher asked the students to write down on paper the word that they made when playing game. e. After time is over, the teacher asked the students to submit their paper. f. The teacher and students discussed the words. 3. Observing

In this phase, the observer observed: a. Students participation and response during teaching and learning process b. Students competence in playing bookworm game. 4. Reflecting After collecting the data, the observer evaluated the teaching-learning process. Then, do reflection by seeing the result of the observation, whether the teaching learning process of improving vocabulary through bookworm game technique reaches success criteria based on the test result of first action Cycle II It is like cycle I, cycle II also consist of planning, action, observation and reflection as follows: 1. Planning In this phase, the observer made/prepared a. The lesson plan by applying bookworm game technique b. Instrument evaluation that will be used in classroom action research cycle

Reflecting After collecting the data, the observer evaluated the teaching-learning process. Then, do reflection by seeing the result of the observation, whether the teaching learning process of vocabulary using bookworm game technique reaches success criteria based on the test result of second action. In this second cycle, the observer made conclusion of the applying bookworm game technique in improving the students vocabulary at the Second Grade (VIII A) of MTs Nurussalam Lassa-Lassa Gowa.

B. Research Subject The research subject of this classroom action research is the second grade students in class VIII A in 2011-2012 academic year. The class consists of 30 students with 18 women and 12 men. C. Research Instrument There are two instruments used i.e.: 1. Observation sheet Observation sheet aims at finding out the students data about their presence and activeness in teaching learning process. 2. Facts test Facts test aims to get information about students improvement after teaching learning process ends. D. Data Analysis The researcher conducts the action research of teaching vocabulary using Bookworm Game at the second grade of MTs Nurussalam Lassa-Lassa Gowa. What follows are steps in analyzing the data based on Miles and Huberman (1984: 170). a. Reducing the data This is the first component in analyzing the data that contains selection process, focusing, and summarizing data from field notes. In this step, the researchers selects, limits, and summarize the data from the implementation of teaching vocabulary using Bookworm Game.

b. Displaying the data The second step of analyzing the data is describing the data in narrative which the research conclusion will be possible to be done. This step is describing the result of the research which is described in systematic and log sentence, ic therefore the result is understandable the form of displaying is not always in the sentences, but can be displayed in table form which supports the narrative data. c. Making conclusion The last step is the researcher makes conclusion of the research. Then the researcher also verifies the conclusion the method is by discussing the research conclusion with the collaborator of the research. This step is very important to be done in order to get good research conclusion. The data got from cycle I and cycle II is analyzed through the following steps: 1. The assesment of students activeness Classification Very Active Active Less Active Not Active Score 4 3 2 3.Students attention toward the game 1 4.Students activeness in applying the game. Layman (1972:216) Table 1. The assesment of students activeness Criteria 1.Students sit down in their own seat 2. Students are ready to get the game

Calculating the mean score of the students vocabulary test by using the following formula: a. To find out the mean score of the students test, the researcher will use the formula: X X = ------N Where: X = Mean Score X = Total Scorer N = the Number of Students (Gay, 1981) b. To classify the students score, there are seven classifications which will be used as follows: 9, 6 10 as excellent

c. To calculate the percentage of the students activeness, the formula which will be used as follows: F P = --- x 100 N Notation: P : Rate Percentage F : Frequency N : The Total Number of Students (Sudjana, 1999)
