1 Defining dissertation Dissertation" comes from the Latin dissertti, meaning discourses Dissertation according to oxford dictionary, "Dissertation is a long essay, especially one written for a university degree or diploma". 1.1.2 Thesis and dissertation The terms thesis and dissertation are interchangeable. A thesis as well as a dissertation is a written discourse on the given subject. Although, there are 2 essential differences between a thesis and dissertation. A thesis means one have to conduct original research. A dissertation implies one synthesize the information collected and perhaps, include the thoughts on it. The second difference lies in the degree one obtain after completing these papers. A thesis allows getting the higher degree; a dissertation is more likely to be the smaller part of the 1st degree. When writing a thesis or dissertation, one will have to take into account the first difference presented. If you have to write a thesis, you should be aware of the fact that you are to put forward a hypothesis that is absolutely new, your thesis implies that original research is involved. Writing a dissertation requires your knowledge of the recent discoveries. You have to draw absolutely new conclusions on the basis of what you have read and analyzed. 1.1.3. Dissertation in architecture

The major part of Architecture education is design of built spaces as executed through drawings, models and other kinds of visual representation. Together with the work space of the architectural studio, the presentation of designs followed by a challenging critic or jury, and submission of a carefully wrought portfolio- these are undoubtedly the main elements of an architectural education. Yet as anyone who has ever tried to explain architecture quickly realizes, architecture is not only about images and models. Words too are an integrated part of what architecture is all about. Architecture is textual as well as visual and special. Most obviously words are necessary explanation of what kind of architecture is referred to in drawings and models, try explaining design to a critic without speaking at all! Words are also a way of exploring new territories, new ideas, new kinds of architecture- from the roman architecture theorist Vitruvius to the modern Robert Venturi some of the most important and influential works of architecture have been books and other kinds of writing. Indeed, without these words there would be no buildings, no architecture and no architectural study. A dissertation is (wordy) architecture made of words. It is a way of conceiving and producing architecture through sentences, paragraphs and considered arguments. It is an arena in which alternatively explain, explore, challenge, theories or imagine architecture.
