SAFETY PRECAUTIONS
1. Before returning an instrument to the customer, always make a safety check of the entire instrument, including, but not limited to, the following items. a. Be sure that no built-in protective devices are defective and/or have been defeated during servicing. (1) Protective shields are provided on this chassis to protect both the technician and the customer. Correctly replace all missing protective shields, including any removed for servicing convenience. (2) When reinstalling the chassis and/or other assembly in the cabinet, be sure to put back in place all protective devices, including, but not limited to, nonmetallic control knobs, insulating fishpapers, adjustment and compartment covers/shields, and isolation resistor/capacitor networks. Do not operate this instrument or permit it to be operated without all protective devices correctly installed and functioning. b. Be sure that there are no cabinet openings through which an adult or child might be able to insert their fingers and contact a hazardous voltage. Such opening include, but are not limited to, (1) spacing between the picture tube and the cabinet mask, (2) excessively wide cabinet ventilation slots, and (3) an improperly fitted and/or incorrectly secured cabinet back cover. c. Leakage Current Hot Check With the instrument completely reassembled, plug the AC line cord directly into a 120V AC outlet (PX-42M2G : 240V AC outlet). (Do not use an isolation transformer during this test.) Use a leakage current tester or a metering system that complies with American National Standards Institutes (ANSI) C101.1 Leakage Current for Appliances and Underwriters Laboratories(UL) 1950. With the instrument AC switch first in the ON position and then in the OFF position, measure from a known earth ground (metal waterpipe, conduit, etc.) to all exposed metal parts of the instrument(antennas, handle bracket, metal cabinet, screwheads, metallic overlays, control shafts, etc.), especially any exposed metal parts that offer an electrical return path to the chassis. Any current measured must not exceed 3.5 milliamp. Reverse the instrument power cord plug in the outlet and repeat test.ANY MEASUREMENTS NOT WITHIN THE LIMITS SPECIFIED HEREIN INDICATE A POTENTIAL SHOCK HAZARD THAT MUST BE ELIMINATED BEFORE RETURNING THE INSTRUMENT TO THE CUSTOMER.

2. Read and comply with all caution and safety-related notes on or inside the Monitor cabinet, on the Projection Monitor chassis, or on the picture tube. 3. Design Alteration Warning Do not alter or add to the mechanical or electrical design of this unit. Design alterations and additions, including, but not limited to, circuit modifications and the addition of the items such as auxiliary audio and/or video output connections might alter the safety characteristics of this Monitor and create a hazard to the user. Any design alterations or additions will void the manufacturer's warranty and will make you,the servicer, responsible for personal injury or property damage resulting therefrom. 4. Hot Chassis Warning a. Some MultiSync Monitor chassis are electrically connected directly to one conductor of the AC power cord and may be safely serviced without an isolation transformer only if the AC power plug is inserted so that the chassis is connected to the ground side of the AC power source. To confirm that the AC power plug is inserted correctly, with an AC voltmeter measure between the chassis and a known earth ground. If a voltage reading in excess of 1.0V is obtained, remove and reinsert the AC power plug in the opposite polarity and again measure the voltage potential between the chassis and a known earth ground. b. Some Projection Monitor chassis normally have 85V AC (RMS), between chassis and earth ground regardless of the AC plug polarity. These chassis can be safely serviced only with an isolation transformer inserted in the power line between the receiver and the AC power source, for both personnel and test equipment protection. c. Some Projection Monitor chassis have a secondary ground systems in addition to the main chassis ground. This secondary ground system is not isolated from the AC power line. The two ground system are electrically separated by insulating material that must not be defeated or altered.

CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION
I. Description of Analog PWB Circuit Operation
1. Video signal processing
(1) HD decoder and PC interface blocks The component signal input (YPbPr, YCrCb) from the HD connector and the PC signal input from the PC connector are applied to the ANALOG PWB, and further to IC6110. In IC6110, the component signal is converted into RGB type and output is generated through PC-signal changeover. Changeover is effected with the control signal PCOTHER from the microcomputer IC6800 used for system control. Demodulation of HI-VISION signals and DVD and such component type video signals is also controlled by the NTHD signal from the microcomputer. (2) Video AMP block The RGB type video signal input from the VD connector and the RGB signal output from IC6110 are entered in IC6109. These signals are changed over by the RGBSEL signal from the microcomputer, and entered in IC6113. The video and HI-VISION signals are input in IC6113 after passing through IC6111 (buffer AMP), FL6103 ~ FL6105 (band limit filters), and IC6112 (changeover switch). In IC6113, the input signals are adjusted to a voltage suitable for the AD converter at the next stage. IC6113 involves a clamp circuit, and DC values are determined at the brightness control and sub-brightness control terminals. The video amplitude is determined by the contrast control and sub-contrast control terminals. Each control terminal is controlled by the microcomputer. The brightness control terminal is adjustable with BRT in factory adjusting mode and brightness of the user menu. The contrast control terminal is adjustable with CONT in factory adjusting mode and VIDEO of the user menu. The sub-brightness control and sub-contrast control terminals are respectively adjustable with RB, GB, BB and RD, GD, BD in factory adjusting mode. Adjusted values are approximately 540mVdc for the black part of the video signal, and 2.24Vdc for the white part. Clamp pulses are fed from IC6506 (timing controller). 2.24Vdc 540mVdc

(3) AD converter block The AD converter block (IC6114, IC6115, IC6116) is intended to convert the analog RGB signal into the 8-bit digital signal. Sampling is effected with the ADCLK signal that is fed from IC6506. The clock frequency can differ according to the display signals (HI-VISION, VIDEO, etc.) and the PC mode. (4) Digital signal processor block The digitized video signals are converted into signals suitable for plasma display by double speed conversion and picture element conversion at the field memory (IC6500, IC6502, IC6504, IC6512, IC6513, IC6514), the signal processing IC (IC6551), and the latch ICs (IC6501, IC6503, IC6505, IC6515, IC6516, IC6517, IC6600, IC6602, IC6604). This IC group is controlled by the signal processing control IC (IC6552). IC6552 is controlled by the various signals of HDPTC, VDPTC, SVPWCK, SVPRCK from the IC6506 block (timing controller), PTCCLK and PTCDATA from the microcomputer, DSCLK and DSDATA from the ROM (IC6607, IC6608, IC6610, IC6611, IC6617, IC6618), and XRST, etc. from the on-screen synthetic IC (IC6606). IC6551 has an independent clock for system operation. X6550 is a quartz crystal oscillator for clock signal generation. Correction is performed at the gamma correction processing ICs (IC6601, IC6613, IC6603, IC6614, IC6605, IC6615) so that the g value can be almost identical with the CRT value. SW6602 is a switch used to select a value of inverse g correction. It is usually set at 0. JP6600 is a switch used to select the accuracy of g correction processing. It is usually connected to the 3 (microcomputer control) side. (5) On-screen synthesis processor block The gamma-processed digital video signal and the on-screen signal are synthesized at IC6606, and the resultant output is sent to the plasma display module (AD connector). IC6606 is in charge of signal synthesis under the control by HSYNC, VSYNC, DEFCK, ROMOCK from the IC6506 block. Using the BLKH timing from the IC6506 block, IC6606 performs vertical blanking (black synthesis).

CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION
In addition, IC6606 is in charge of controlling the ROM (IC6607, IC6608, IC6610, IC6611, IC6617, IC6618) for digital video signal processing control and the ROM control ICs (IC6612, IC6616, IC6619, IC6620). This processing is controlled by SROMRST from the microcomputer. The on-screen signal is generated at IC6609, which is controlled by OSDCS, VICLK, VIDATA from the microcomputer and by OSDCK, VDOSD, HDOSDD) from the timing controller block.

2. Sync signal processing

(1) Sync signal processor block The separate SYNC of the PC signal from the PC connector and the video signal from the VD connector are respectively entered in IC6102. In IC6102, the sync signal is selected with HVSEL0 and HVSEL1 from the microcomputer. Since then, this signal input is entered in the sync signal processor IC6104. The Y signal of the component signal from the HD connector and the G on Sync signal of the PC signal from the PC connector are respectively entered in IC6103 after passing through the buffer. In IC6103, the sync signal is selected with YGSEL0 and YGSEL1 from the microcomputer. Since then, this signal input is entered in the sync signal processor IC6104 for the purpose of sync separation signal processing. IC6104 automatically makes judgment of whether sync separation signal processing is needed or not. The resultant output is sent to the circuit (IC6506, microcomputer, IC6105) at the next stage, after the unification of sync signal polarity. IC6104 sends out outputs to the microcomputer, regarding the presence of sync signal or the result of polarity judgment. Sync positive or Sync negative or G On Sync

(2) AFC (auto-frequency control) circuit block An AFC circuit is loaded on IC6105. Therefore, AFC is effective on sync signals being output from IC6104. The oscillation frequency is controlled by SDA and SCL from the microcomputer. A sync signal is selected from the AFC circuit so that a stable sync signal can be obtained even under the condition of no signal. IC6106 is a basic pulse generator for AFC, requiring the adjustment of VR6103 and VR6104. (3) Clock generator block and timing controller block IC6507 is the fundamental clock generator of this system. IC6506 is a timing controller that generates various horizontal and vertical signals, based on the clock signal generated at IC6507. IC6507 generates the fundamental clock signal by controlling the VCO (voltage control type oscillator) through phase comparison between HSYNC input from IC6104 to IC6506 and the horizontal sync signal (INTHD) obtained by fundamental clock signal division at IC6506. This series of operation stabilizes the fundamental clock. The clock oscillation frequency is changeable with the input signal. It is about 25MHz when the VGA signal is displayed in the PC mode. IC6506 is controlled by VICLK, VIDATA, and TIMLAT from the microcomputer, and various horizontal and

vertical pulses are generated based on NORHD (Pin 21) and DETVD. Pulses output from IC6506 are applied to various circuits for signals, such as INTHD to be output to VCO, sync signals for plasma display module, etc.

3. System control
(1) Microcomputer block The microcomputer IC6800 for system control is in charge of various operation and control according to the signals to be displayed, such as input signal changeover, adjustment of timing for output signals from the timing controller, adjustment of the video chroma block, level control for HD decoder hue and color depth, control of video AMP brightness and video levels, selection of digital signal processing method, control of onscreen display data and display position, various controls of plasma display modules, fault condition judgment within the set, and so on. During PC screen display, PC mode judgment and other operations are conducted for the control of various blocks, based on the data of horizontal sync signal, vertical sync signal, etc. The status of these systems is stored in the external EEPROM (IC6803). (Last memory function) The microcomputer is provided with an S2 detection function (automatic discrimination of Terminal S system). When a cable of Video S terminal is connected (microcomputers Pin 61 is turned H), the screen size (screen mode) is automatically modified by the voltage at Pin 25. The HD decoder and the video AMP are controlled through the external DA converter of IC6801 and IC6802. Variations in the output level of the external DA converter are 0 to 12V DC at the maximum. Pin 15 of IC6800 is a reset terminal that is connected to the reset IC (IC6804). This terminal usually operates at 5 volts. (2) Fault detector block The microcomputer is in charge of fan stop, plasma display module alarming, and temperature sensor detection. The main unit of the set is provided with four fans. The stop signal from each fan is entered in IC6807. Even when a single fan stops, the L signal is sent to IC6553. The power unit is also provided with a fan. The power fan stop signal PM is sent from connectors Pin 12 to IC6806, and further transferred to IC6553. If any fan stops, Pin 4 of the microcomputer is turned L (low) and the red LED flashes to indicate the power standby state. JP6550 is a switch used to select whether the fan stop signal is valid or invalid. When the connector is connected to Pin 1 side, detection of fan stop is made invalid. It is generally connected to Pin 3 side. If any error occurs in a plasma display module (signal system), an alarm signal is sent to Pin 14 of the microcomputer from Pin 79 of the AD connector. If this terminal is at the L level, red and green LEDs are reciprocally lit to indicate that the power supply is in the standby state. If a temperature sensor detects any error in the power unit, a temperature sensor error signal is sent from Pin 12 of the PM connector to the input terminal (Pin 57) of the microcomputers temperature sensor via IC6808. If the temperature sensor input terminal is at the L level, the green LED flashes to indicate that the power supply is in the standby state. (3) Remote control block This system is applied to remote control. A light receiver block of the infrared remote control is mounted on the POWER PWB and its signal is applied to IC6809 through the PM connector. The AUDIO PWB is provided with a wired remote control input terminal and input signals are entered in IC6809 from the AE connector. In IC6809, signals of the infrared remote control are generally selected. If a wired remote control is connected, however, signals of the wired remote control are selected and sent to IC6800.

1. Video input
(1) Composite video input The video signal, input from M1001, is amplified by two times at IC1001. Since then, it is output from Pin 1 of the YC connector (at an output impedance of 75), and transferred to the VIDEO PWB. (2) Terminal S input The video signals Y and C, input from M1002, are amplified by two times respectively at IC1002 and IC1003. Since then, they are respectively output from Pin 3 and Pin 5 of the YC connector (at an output impedance of 75), and transferred to the VIDEO PWB. When a cable is connected to this terminal, the base of Q1001 is short-circuited to GND so that an L output is generated from Pin 8 of the YC connector as a discrimination signal of Terminal S connection. When an S2 signal input is entered, the DC signal superposed on the C signal is output from Pin 7 of the YC connector, and transferred to the VIDEO PWB.

2. Component signal input

The YPbPr signal (YCrCb signal) input from M1003, M1004, and M1005 is immediately output to the ANALOG PWB through the HD connector.

3. RGB signal input

(1) Video signal The RGB video signals input from Pins 1, 2, 3 of M1006 are directly output to the ANALOG PWB through Pin 2, Pin 4, and Pin 6 of the PC connector. (2) Sync signal The HSYNC signal input from Pin 13 of M1007 is arranged to be about 1.4Vp-p by the circuit consisting of Q1050, etc. It is then output from Pin 8 of the PC connector. The HSYNC signal input from Pin 14 of M1008 is sync-separated at 0.7 by the circuit of IC1006. It is then output from Pin 10 of the PC connector, maintained approximately at 5.0Vp-p. (3) Plag and play (PnP) function IC1004 is a memory IC intended for plag and play. Data exchange is effected between the personal computer and IC1004 through M1006. SW1001 is a selector switch used to enable or disable the writing of IC1004. When this switch is moved to the 3 side, writing is enabled. Data writing is effected by connecting an exclusive jig to M1006 in the state writing is enabled. Under normal operation it is set at the 1 side.

4. External control terminal

This system is arranged to enable external control through RS-232C. It is used when an optional tuner unit is connected or this unit is controlled by the personal computer. The control signal of RS-232C connected to M1007 is put into interface processing (voltage conversion processing) with the outside by the RS-232C driver (IC1007). Since then, it is connected to the microcomputer (IC6800) through the RS connector.

III. Video PWB Circuit Operation

1. Y/C separation
(1) Overall configuration The video input signal is input from Pin 1 of the YC connector, and led to IC5005, IC5006, Q3060, and Q9009. IC5005 and IC5006 are used for signal changeover among this video signal, a Y/C signal processed by 3-line Y/C separation, another Y/C signal processed by three-dimensional Y/C separation, and one more Y/C signal (input at Pin 3 and Pin 5 of the YC connector) obtained when an input is available at Terminal S. IC5005 is in charge of changeover in the signal Y system and IC5006 is intended for changeover in the signal C system.

(2) Three-dimensional Y/C separation (for NTSC) The video signal input into Q9009 is arranged for band limitation by FL9001. It is corrected for level/F characteristics by the amplifier (of Q9011 and Q9012) at the latter stage. The resultant output is fed from Q9013 to IC9003 at 1.5Vp-p. The same signal is sync-clamped by Q9017 and the signal sync-separated at Q9018 is entered in IC9004. Thus the stable signal at 8 times the horizontal frequency is output from Pin 18. In IC9009, three-dimensional Y/C separation is conducted by the interface between IC9001 and IC9002. The Y signal is output from Pin 48, while the C signal is output from Pin 51. The Y and C signals are processed for band limitation at FL9002 and FL9003. They are amplified at the next stage, and then input in the changeover circuit of IC5005 and IC5006. CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION
(3) 3-line Y/C separation (for PAL, 4.43 NTSC) The video signal, input in Q5036, is processed for band limitation at FL5003, and its level is corrected at the amplifier (Q5004, Q5005) at the successive stage. The signal from Q5006 is input to IC5007 at 1.5Vp-p. IC5007 performs 3-line Y/C separation, and the Y signal from Pin 25 and the C signal from Pin 23 are output. The Y and C signals are processed for band limitation at FL5001/ FL5002. They are amplified by two times at the next stage, and then input in the changeover circuit of IC5005 and IC5006. Signal Y output Band limitation /X2AMP Q5009, Q5047, FL9002 Signal C output The output from IC5005 (Signal Y) is processed for F-characteristic correction and peaking at Q5011, Q5037, Q5038, and Q5039 at the next stage. The resultant output is entered in IC5008 (PAL/NTSC demodulation processing). The output from IC5006 (Signal C) is entered in IC5008 (PAL/NTSC demodulation processing) and IC5010 (SECAM demodulation). (4) SECAM system reception During reception at the SECAM system, the video signal input is applied to Pin 15 of IC5008 through IC5006 and IC5005. Since a trap circuit is contained in IC5008, the Y signal is taken out. The video signal input is also applied to Pin 24 of IC5010 and the C signal is taken out from the built-in bell filter. Since then, color signal demodulation is performed at IC5010.

2. Demodulator circuit
(1) PAL/NTSC demodulation After passing through the built-in delay line of IC5008, the Y signal is once output from Pin 4. This signal is applied to Pin 15 of IC5012 (CTI) and amplified by two times there. The resultant output is generated at Pin 2. In the NTSC mode, this signal directly passes through IC5017 (switching circuit) and returns to IC5008. Any signal other than that once passes through the delay line DL5001 and then IC5017 (switching circuit), and returns to IC5008. In IC5008, the signal is processed for pedestal clamp processing, black expansion processing, DC reproduction, sharpness control, etc., and led to the internal RGB matrix circuit.

The C signal is processed for systems discrimination. If the signal is PAL or NTSC, it is processed for APC, ACC, carrier reproduction, and phase detection. It is turned into the R-Y/B-Y signal and once output from Pin 5 and Pin 6 of IC5008. It is then applied to Pins 12 and 13 of IC5010 (SECAM demodulation). It passes through the internal switching circuit and is output from Pins 10 and 11, and it is then input in the next stage. Regarding information about systems discrimination, a control signal output is generated from Pin 3/7, in order to control IC5010 (SECAM demodulation) and IC5009 (1H DELAY). The amplified signal from IC5009 (1H DELAY) is output from Pins 29 and 30, and the input is applied to Pins 7 and 8 of IC5012. IC5012 is in charge of profile correction for color signals. The output is generated from Pins 11 and 12, and is returned to Pins 51 and 52 of IC5008. Demodulation processing is effected in IC5008 for the generation of color-difference signal, and the signal is sent to the RGB matrix circuit. In the RGB matrix block, an analog RGB signal is generated at the RGB matrix circuit based on this colordifference signal and the brightness signal. The output is obtainable from Pins 1, 3, 5 of the VD connector. (2) SECAM demodulation When a color signal is received from the SECAM system, a control signal from Pin 3 of IC5008 (PAL/NTSC) is sent to IC5010 (SECAM demodulation). In IC5010 (SECAM demodulation), the C signal input at Pin 24 is processed for band limitation at the bell filter. After amplification at the limiter circuit, the signal is further processed for FM demodulation and de-emphasis, and is changed over by the previous control signal. Since then, a color-difference signal output is generated from Pin 10/Pin 11. When this signal is applied to Pins 26 and 27 of IC5009 (1H DELAY), complementary operation is effected every hour. The output is generated from Pins 29 and 30, and applied to Pins 7 and 8 of IC5012 (CTI). IC5012 is in charge of profile correction for color signals. The output is generated from Pins 11 and 12, and is returned to Pins 51 and 52 of IC5008. An analog RGB signal is generated at the RGB matrix circuit based on this color-difference signal and the brightness signal. The output is obtainable from Pins 1, 3, 5 of the VD connector.

CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION 3. Sync processing

(1) Sync separation processing When the Y signal input is applied to Pin 17 of IC5008, internal sync clamp and sync separation (component SYNC) are performed. The vertical sync signal is used for the discrimination of 50Hz or 60Hz by the countdown system. At the same time, the vertical sync separation output is generated from Pin 31. This output is available at Pin 9 of the VD connector through IC5014. The horizontal sync signal is entered in the internal AFC (automatic frequency control) circuit. In the AFC circuit, a signal of the 500kHz oscillator circuit is 1/32 frequency-divided and its phase is compared with the foregoing horizontal sync signal. The horizontal sync signal is output from Pin 23 and IC5011 timing correction is effected. After that, the signal is output from Pin 7 of the VD connector through IC5014. This signal is applied to Pin 25, and sand-castle pulses (Pin 2 output: horizontal blanking + clamp pulse) are output during PLL operation.
