The UP police claimed that the incident was not a blatant security breach and that Sharma is a properly verified resident of nearby Udaipur village. It however utilised the incident to slam the padayatra from the security point of view, saying this kind of risks are very much there when there is an unannounced movement. It is also a free for all kind of a thing, Aligarh SSP Satyendra Vir Singh said. Sharma is currently being interrogated by the police. He reportedly did not attempt to brandish or use the firearm. The incident took place two hours after Rahul resumed his footmarch to Aligarh to make common cause with farmers in the state over Mayawati government forcibly acquiring land from farmers at cheap prices. Bangalore: India is weighing the pros and cons of going in for collaboration for its ambitious human space flight programme but a final decision would be driven by the extent of technological gains accrued to New Delhi from it. Different models are possible in undertaking the proposed mission, first mooted nearly a decade ago, chairman of Indian Space Research Organisation K Radhakrishnan said. Radhakrishnan, also Secretary in the Department of Space and Chairman of Space Commission, said there is a lot of discussion globally on collaboration in human space flight programmes (not Indiaspecific, but general in nature). So, then, we should decide what we have to do in this area. There are different models available, he said. One possibility is to have a human being (Indi-

an) flown in Soyuz (Russian rocket) or some other system. Its like paying the money, getting into it, conduct a small experiment and come back. Thats one part of it, he said. Another model is to make a crew module indigenously and use a man-rate vehicle (rocket) of a foreign space agency, and the third option for India is to develop the rocket and associated technologies on its own and undertake the mission. All these things are there. The question is how much technology you will earn, what benefit you will get out of it (in case of collaboration). One has to weigh it because you (India) must have a longterm programme for it (human space flights). We are not doing for the sake of doing it (the human space flight mission) actually, he said. In a democratic system, people are kings. Elected representatives are answerable to them. There have been so many scandals rocking the nation. In so many cases, you cannot even count the number of zeros involved in the scam. The same money could have been used for the development of the country. With that illegal wealth, the country could have easily removed slums and improved our villages, he added. But it does not mean that all is bleak. Honest people can still live in this country. There is nothing wrong in earning money legally. With legal money one should live a dignified life. One should have the contentment of earning money through legal means, he said.

Lokayukta Justice Santosh Hegde greets student union members of Baldwin Methodist College today. He urged youth to take on corruption and to bring in a change in society.

India in danger of missing

Bangalore: India could miss the nano bus it it did not catch up soon with China, Japan or the US that were making rapid strides in the field of nanotechnology, the next frontier of science, says top scientist C.N.R. Rao. India, which had made rapid strides in IT and space technology, was not doing enough in the nanotechnology sector, compared to China, Japan or the US, said the chairman of the scientific advisory committee to the prime minister. This is the only field in which we can do something. And if we dont catch up with others in the next 10 years, we may miss the nano bus too, Rao said in an interview here. Rao lamented that India was languishing at the 10th or 12th position in the world in conducting research in nano-science and contributing papers in the field. In terms of publication of papers, research wise, we are way behind others, in the 10th or 12th in the world, while China is at the top, followed by the US and Japan, Rao said in an interview. Nanotechnology, a sun rise industry worldwide, manipulates matter on an atomic and molecular scale. It deals with structures between 1-100 nanometre and its materials like nanotubes are measured in one billionth of a metre. Nanotech has a vast range of applications in medicine, electronics, biomaterials and energy production. Though the nanotech industry worldwide is still nascent, the global market for its

products and applications is estimated to be about $1.6 trillion by 2015, with a 50 percent CGPA (cumulative growth point average) over the next five years. Noting that China, Japan, Korea and even Taiwan had invested heavily in nanoscience, Rao said China had already overtaken the US in using nanotechnology and its applications in diverse areas. The amount of research being done in China in nanotech is more than any other country. Though collaboration with China may not be possible because they (its scientists) think we are competitors, we can collaborate with other countries as the field is capital intensive and requires more scientists and technologists to join the stream, Rao pointed out. Terming nanotechnology as the next frontier of science to be pursued aggressively as it changes the world in a big way, the eminent scientist said not many people, including scientists, understood the magnitude of what it could do for humankind, environment and climate. In India, the understanding of this fascinating field is very poor. Many people still think it is a science fiction and a fantasy. But if we can catch on, it can change the way we live, we develop and improve the quality of life, Rao asserted. Referring to the critical problems of energy, drinking water and environment/climate faced by India and many countries in the world, the Linus Pauling research pro-

fessor said the prime minister had set an ambitious target of producing about 800,000 mw of power by 2020. But there was no way of reaching even half the target with the available resources, including fossil fuels. Even with the use of nuclear energy and renewable energy like solar and wind, we may touch 400,000 mw as other sources of energy such as coal, thermal and natural gas is limited. If we have to achieve the national mission target, set by the prime minister, we have to split water to produce hydrogen energy using silicon-based nano particles, Rao noted. In this context, he mentioned that US President Barack Obama had recently granted $120 million to the US department of energy for undertaking research projects to produce hydrogen energy from water. This is the kind of work we should be doing in India because hydrogen energy is going to be the future energy the world over. Artificial photosynthesis is another area in which we can take out hydrogen as soon as it comes out by splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen using solar energy and nano materials, Rao added. The state-run Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR) on the outskirts of the city, headed by Rao, has initiated several research projects to develop applications like carbon nanotubes for water purification, cosmetics, computer discs, textiles and bleach-making. Detailed project reports from state not exhaustive enough: Central ocial
L Raghunanda Bangalore Beat
Bangalore: The state government needs to prepare proper detailed project reports and submit them to the central government if the process of releasing funds has to be speeded up. The state has got 17 projects for approval under the PM package, including multi-purpose and minor irrigation projects. But these projects have been put on the backburner and not being cleared by the ministry of water resources, though they have been cleared by the Planning Commission. The reason behind this is the lack of a proper detailed project report to support the states claim to these projects, said M K Sinha, chief engineer at the Central Water Commission (CWC), New Delhi. Officials from Karnataka have been submitting the proposals time and again, but a realistic assessment of the projects has not been submitted, he said. What has been noticed is that there is no substantial data on the command area, flood relief management for downstream lands and the management of submerged areas. The Krishna River Water Tribunal too has not been able to give proper reports to the CWC. This lack of information is clearly visible in Ghataprabha, Malaprabha projects. There are no details about displaced farmers, submergence of land, and the extent of lands to be used up for the projects, he said. Any project with the complete detailed report would get approvals from the central water resources ministry in nine weeks.

Instead of giving statutory powers to the committee to penalise and prosecute the culprits, the government is neglecting the report, he alleged. The committee should take stern action against culprits irrespective of their position whether they are MP, MLAs or others, he said. Terming the BJP governments recent decision that elected representatives must visit one government school every month as a gimmick, Vishwanath said in fact this programme was launched by the previous Congress government. However the Congress did not give any publicity while the BJP thrives only on publicity, he said. New Delhi: The Supreme Court today directed the Delhi Police to place before it the status report on the probe conducted by it in the cash-for-vote scam during the trust vote faced by the UPA government in July 2008. Not satisfied with the Centres contention that an FIR has been lodged in the case and probe will be completed within two months, a bench headed by Justice Aftab Alam ordered the police to file the status report by July 15. Two months is a long time. Tell us about the present status of the probe, the bench said, while posting the matter for further hearing on July 15. Solicitor general Gopal Subramanium said the status report will be filed within the stipulated period in a sealed envelope. The court passed the order on a petition filed by former Chief Election Commissioner J M Lyngdoh seeking its directions to the government to take action against politicians in the scam. Sachans kin moves SC, seek CBI probe

New Delhi: Family members of Uttar Pradeshs deputy chief medical officer Y S Sachan today moved the Supreme Court for a CBI probe into his mysterious death inside the Lucknow jail. An advocate, appearing for the Sachans family, apprised the bench of justices Altamas Kabir and Cyriac Joseph about a petition filed in the courts registry and sought its urgent hearing. The bench, however, asked the advocate to tell the registry to slate the petition for proper hearing. Arrested for his alleged role in the murder of Lucknow CMO B P Singh, purportedly to suppress a scam involving financial irregularities and embezzlement of National Rural Health Mission funds, Sachan was found dead inside the toilet of Lucknow district jail hospital.

Roseau (Dominica): Indian bowlers dominated a rain-truncated opening day, landing early blows to leave West Indies at a precarious 75 for three in their first innings in the third and final cricket Test here. Sent into bat, the hosts were struggling in the 31.1 overs of play that was possible when the heavens opened up shortly after the lunch break, and it stayed that way till the days play was finally called off at 4.15 pm local time yesterday. Darren Bravo was batting on 22 while Shivnarine Chanderpaul was unbeaten on 17, with the two adding 40 runs for the fourth wicket in 14.2 overs. Before that, the Indian seamers had West Indies in a spot of bother, picking up three early wickets. In-form pacer Ishant Sharma struck twice while Praveen Kumar chipped in with one as West Indies went to lunch at 64 for three at the Windsor Park. After Mahendra Singh Dhoni decided to bowl with the hope that his seamers would get the team some quick wickets, Ishant and Praveen lived up to the skippers expectations by removing Adrian Barath and debutantes Kieran Powell and Kirk Edwards. Ishant showed no after-effects of a facial injury he suffered on

Praveen Kumar celebrates with Ishant Sharma, right, after taking the wicket of West Indies Kieran Powell, not shown, on the first day of the third cricket Test match in Roseau, Dominica, yesterday. Monday, returning figures of two for 23. While Kumar gave the team its first breakthrough by having Powell caught at second slip by V V S Laxman, Ishant, bowling the bouncers to good effect, sent back Barath and Edwards. Ishant, who rattled the hosts with a 10-wicket haul in the drawn second Test at Kensington Oval, looked in good nick here as well. Munaf Patel, playing in his first Test of the three-match series at the expense of Abhimanyu Mithun, bowled economically, though without success. If Praveen and Ishant began with maiden overs, Munaf, who returned to Test cricket after two years, did even better as first change by bowling three maidens on the trot. Earlier Powell, who got his first Test runs a three off a push into covers against Ishant didnt get to score any further as Praveen found the edge of his defensive bat with a peach of a delivery. Barath, after being flustered with a caught behind appeal down the legside by Ishant, edged a pull onto his stumps off the very next delivery. Ishant picked up his third wicket of the morning when he had Edwards who was unlucky to be judged caught behind by debutant Test umpire Richard Kettleborough of England as the rising delivery hit his helmet, and not the bat, on way to Dhoni. West Indies would now look to Bravo and veteran Chander-

paul to bail them out. This is Chanderpauls 133rd Test match, the highest by any West Indian cricketer. Courtney Walsh, with 132 Tests under his belt, held the previous record. Bravo looked the best of all home batsmen and scored two fours a square cut against Ishant past point and then, a backfoot cover drive against Harbhajan Singh. The two had added collected their runs in a rather secure manner on a pitch that didnt live upto its reputation of being quick and bouncy. Bravo had struck three fours in his knock and Chanderpaul one, before the weather gods intervened. Ironically, the day had begun in complete contrast as a bright, sunny day greeted the two sides. West Indies began cautiously on a pitch that was fairly damp but did not offer much sideways movement to Indias pacers. But West Indies still lost three wickets early in the day and found the going so tough that only two boundaries both by left-hander Bravo were scored in the two-hour session. While Munaf is the only change in the Indian line-up, West Indies made two changes, with Powell and Edwards being preferred over Lendl Simmons and Ramnaresh Sarwan. PTI

ou might think he is over ambitious. But Basavaraj A Patil, an information technology scientist at Salzburg University, believes that he can help make Nobel laureates rolling out of a conveyor belt from our country. Producing Nobel laureates is fine, but what would raise your eyebrows is the number he aims to achieve: A hundred Nobel laureates by 2020 and 2,500 by the end of the 21st century! But Patil, who is a researcher returning from Germany, cites the example of Basavaraj A Patil Deutschland to prove that he is not way off the mark. He says Germany stands next only to the US in the number of Noble laureates and in 2010, it got 16 medallions as against USs 29. He has founded Think and Ink Science Foundation to nurture potential Nobel talent. He is inspired by Madam Curie, whose family won six Nobel prizes and over 600 patents. Ask him how it could be done, and he quotes the quotes: Where is will, there is a way and Reach for the stars and you may land up in moon. He says, The way science is taught in our school is through rote learning method. Indian schools are helping students only to pass the exams and not develop interest in the subjects. Is this the way to teach science? At Think Ink Science Foundation, we believe that experimental and experiential, hands-on learning of science enhances creativity, innovation and leadership in solving numerous problems of the real world, leading to a beautiful inclusive world. If the goal we have set for ourselves at Think Ink Science Foundation is to be achieved then we have to catch children at a very young age. From class one up, we teach science under No Cost Experiments and Kitchen Chemistry. If we need good research scientists then that is where the focus should be. For example, we teach students how solar eclipse take place with the use of playing balls with the light placed at one end. In the case of light, we teach them how white light is a combination of all seven colours violet, indigo, green, blue, yellow, orange and red. How to show this to a child? We pain the common playing top with seven colours. When we spin the top, all the colours appear merged into white. Outlining how the foundation is coursing ahead, he said, Already, in more than 50 schools in the state and outside, we have taken some well-known names in science and asked them to give lectures and conduct workshops to children. The foundation shows students some experiments, and then ask the students to develop at least one experiment by themselves. At the end of each session, a science

NOBLE INITIATIVE

Be optimistic, keep your heart healthy

London: Research involving thousands of civil servants in Britain revealed that the more self-satisfied they were, the fewer problems they had with their hearts. Researchers from the Harvard University, US, couldnt explain why this is the case, especially as the finding still stood when factors such as weight and blood pressure were taken into account. Almost 8,000 civil servants were quizzed about their satisfaction with seven areas of their everyday lives love and relationships, hobbies, standard of living, job, family, sex life and ones self, the European Heart Journal reports. Data on their heart health was then taken from their medical records over the following six years and the two compared, according to the Daily Mail. Those who were highly satisfied with their lives overall were 13 percent less likely to have suffered heart problems, with self-satisfaction, happy working, family and sex lives being particularly important. Studies also show that pessimists and people who lack self-confidence have a greater risk of heart attacks and strokes than their more optimistic friends. Harvard researcher Julia Boehm said: These findings suggest that interventions to bolster positive psychological states, not just alleviate negative psychological states, may be relevant among high-risk individuals. Poor diet prepregnancy ups babys risk of diabetes

London: A poor diet before conception could put the baby at risk of developing type II diabetes and obesity, researchers say. Mice that were fed a low protein diet for 10 weeks before conception (but had a normal diet during pregnancy) gave birth to offspring that had lower birth weights, showed catch-up growth after weaning and increased insulin sensitivity. Humans and mice respond in the same way to poor diet during pregnancy; their offspring show low birth weights and increased risk of obesity, type II diabetes, the most common form of the disease and cardiovascular disease. If humans respond in the same way as mice to pre-conception diet as well then women should not only consider what they eat during pregnancy but also before pregnancy. . ., says Anete Dudele from the University of Aarhus, Denmark, who conducted the study. Cardiovascular disease is often associated with obesity and type II diabetes and future research by the team will determine whether offspring born to mothers who had poor pre-conception diets are predisposed to these types of problems as well, an Aarhus statemen said. These findings were presented at the Society for Experimental Biology Annual Conference in Glasgow. IANS

London: Scientists are developing smart and sleek bionic spectacles which they say could soon be on sale and help hundreds of thousands of blind people see. The smart spectacles, being developed by a team at the Oxford University in the UK, uses tiny cameras and a pocket computer to alert wearers to objects and people ahead. The cheap and lightweight glasses, which could be on sale by 2014 following successful trials, would make it easier for the blind to navigate roads in busy areas and even read bus numbers, the researchers said. Elderly people with age-related macular degeneration are likely to be the biggest beneficiaries, the Daily Mail reported. Past attempts to create such a device have resulted in large dark glasses with clunky cameras and bulky computers. But advances in technology mean it should be possible to create bionic spectacles that look almost indistinguishable from standard glasses. Importantly, a price tag of less than 1,000 pound should make them affordable, the researchers told the Royal Societys Summer Science Exhibition. It is satisfying to think that we will be able to produce this at a cost that is going make it available to the people who will benefit the most, Dr Stephen Hicks, who has completed the basic research and is now working on prototype spectacles. He envisages transparent glasses with lenses studded with small light-emitting

diodes and cameras the size of a pinhead at the outside top corners of the frame. The cameras will take in the information the eyes should see and send it down a cable to a mobile phone-sized computer in the wearers pocket. The computer will process the information and simplify it into a pattern of dots. The LEDs in the lenses then light up in that pattern, giving the wearer vital information about what lies ahead. A flickering light could mean there is a person ahead, while a solid block might signify an object such as a flight of stairs. While such information may seem unimpressive to the sighted, it could allow those who have lost much of their vision to regain sufficient independence to go shopping alone or take public transport. Adding in an earpiece could allow

more complex information to be transmitted. For instance, the cameras could capture bus numbers or information on railway departure boards to be analysed by the computer. Once processed, the information would be passed on to the wearer via a voice in their ear. In time, the same principle could be used to help blind people to see the screens on cash machines outside banks or ticket dispensers at train stations. The bionic spectacles rely on the wearer being able to perceive light, so will not be suitable for those who are totally blind. Dr Hicks plans to do small-scale laboratory tests on the blind this year, before enrolling 120 people in a two-year trial that will explore the use of the spectacles in shopping centres and at home. London: Artificially intelligent machines that can interact and even argue with you are just years away, as scientists have launched a mega project to develop a new technology that will allow devices to talk to the users. The technology equipped with artificial intelligence will help machines become familiar with a users voice, with the ultimate goal that it can understand, speak and behave like a human. Although the the five-year, 6.2-millionpounds project is still in its infancy, researchers from the Universities of Edinburgh, Cambridge and Sheffield believe the technology will have many benefits. It could improve voice-activated computers, develop web search engines for audio clips and create voice-controlled devices that could help older people stay independent at home for longer, the Daily Mail reported. We are working to develop technologies that can recognise and generate natural-sounding speech, said Dr Steve Renals of Edinburgh Universitys School of Informatics. This could open the door to computer speech technology becoming commonplace throughout our lives at home, at work, and in our leisure time. Besides recognising the users voice and becoming familiar with their vocabulary, accent and vocal expressions, the technology could also be able to follow the flow of a conversation and to gloss over changes in background noise. Dr Thomas Hain, of the University of Sheffields Department of Computer Science, added: Speech technology is clearly on its way into the mainstream, but the key to its success is human-like performance. and exciting new applications, from clinical asWe are working on the foundations of sistive technology to robotics, from schools to technology that will bring speech to new users board rooms. Khan: N Korea paid to Pak army for Ninfo

Washington: North Korea paid several million dollars to top Pakistani Army officials to gain access to secret nuclear technology and sensitive equipments required in manufacturing a nuclear bomb, disgraced nuclear scientist A Q Khan has claimed by releasing a secret letter in this regard, a major American daily has reported. According to the letter posted by The Washington Post on its website, which is accompanied by a story, Jon ByongHo, Secretary of the Workers party of (North) Korea, in a letter dated July 15, 1998 asks A Q Khan, who then was the project director of the Kahuta Research Center, to give agreed documents and components to a North Korean Embassy official in Islamabad. have already been paid to Army Chief Gen J Karamat and half a million dollars and 3 diamond and ruby sets have been given to Gen Zulfiqar Khan. Both Karamat and Khan have refuted the allegations. In an e-mail from Lahore, Karamat said that Khan, as part of his defense against allegations of personal responsibility for illicit nuclear proliferation, had tried to shift blame on others. He said the letters allegations were malicious with no truth in them whatsoever, The Post said. Khan called the letter a fabrication. WAsia Quartet to hold discussion

Washington: The Middle East Quartet, comprising the European Union, the UN, the US and Russia would meet next Monday in Washington and take stock of the current situation between Israel and Palestine, a top US official said. US State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said Wednesday that since President Barack Obama outlined his vision in March about peacemaking between Israelis and Palestinians based on the 1967 borders, many of the Quartet members have been engaged in efforts to get them back to the table. With regard to the Quartet next week, the ministers are going to come together and take stock of where we are. So its a good opportunity for stock- taking among the major ministers involved, Xinhua quoted Nuland as saying. But she acknowledged it is hard to get the parties to resume talks. You can see that this is hard work getting these parties back to the table, and that hard work will continue not only in the US but by all the Quartet partners. She said it was not a good idea for the Palestinians to try to seek recognition of their statehood when the UN General Assembly meets in September.

UK ocial says Afghanistan making progress in security

United Nations: Britains permanent rep resentative to the UN has praised steps taken towards making Afghanistan more secure, a media report said. Despite the challenges, significant progress has been made on the road to a secure and viable Afghanistan, Xinhua quoted Mark Lyall Grant as saying at a Security Council meeting yesterday. Afghanistan is due to take over its own security duties from international coalition forces by the end of 2014. The Afghan National Security Forces are due to grow in size as the coalition forces withdraw from the country in the coming years. Agreeing on settlements regarding outstanding political issues in Afghanistan is essential to the embattled countrys success, Grant said. An Afghan-led political process is needed to underpin the military progress. To be durable, any political settlement must be inclusive and must respect the interests and rights of all Afghan citizens, he said. He said the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) must support political progress towards a democratic and inclusive state that can hold free and fair elections. IANS

Egypt denies being source of E.coli

Cairo: Egypt has denied reports that the countrys fenugreek seeds exported to Europe caused the E.coli infections that claimed dozens of lives. Officials from the Central Administration of Agricultural Quarantine took and analysed fenugreek seeds from the warehouse of the exporter and all results were negative, Xinhua reported citing a statement from the agricultural ministry. E.coli strain has not been reported in Egypt and no illness cases have been found, it said. If fenugreek sprouts are suspected to be contaminated with E.coli strain, it could be related to different handling processes, such as re-packing or water used for sprouting, it added. Karachi: At least 28 people lost their lives in Pakistans commercial capital in target killings and fresh bout of violence, while 30 others were injured, as political tensions escalated between the ruling PPP and its estranged ally the MQM. Sindh chief minister Qaim Ali Shah held a meeting to review the situation in the city that has shown no signs of improvement in the last 48 hours. The chief minister directed the para-military Rangers for strict action against the miscreants. By late last night, police and rescue officials said the number of victims of the violence that included drive by target killings had risen to 28 with around 30 injured as well. The day started with bodies of five people being recovered from a mini-bus on Shabbir Usmani Road in Gulshan-e-Iqbal. The bodies were shifted to hospital by ambulances. All five people met their deaths by receiving gunshots. A man was shot to death in Baldia Town later this afternoon. The worst affected flashpoint was Orangi Town, where at least

The escalation of violence came a week after the Mutthaida-e-Qaumi Movement broke ranks with the Pakistan Peoples Party-led government and opted to sit in opposition. MQM leader, Altaf Hussain delivered a stark warning from London, saying if his party workers continue to be targetted, strike calls would be given until the government was brought down. In tragic developments highlighting the growing ethnic division between the Urdu-speaking MQM and Pashtun speaking Awami National Party, a number of bodies were recovered since yesterday. Tension still prevails in the area with shops and markets closed today. People who live in the area are still besieged at their residences due to regular firing by miscreants. Salt safe to eat, says study

London: For years, doctors have been saying that too much salt is bad for health. Yet, a new study claims that its safe to eat and cutting its daily intake does nothing to lower the risk of developing heart disease. High levels of salt have long been linked to a greater risk of developing hypertension, heart attacks and strokes. Now, researchers at the University of Exeter claim to have found evidence that although blood pressure is reduced when salt intake is cut, therere actually no long-term health benefits, the Daily Express reported. Cows have best Panel summons 16 friends, get scribes in Shahzad case stressed when Seven killed separated in Bangladesh

London: Cows are more clever than you thought they also have best friends and become stressed if they are separated, a British scientist has claimed. Krista McLennan, who made the discovery while working on her PhD at Northampton University, believes her findings could help improve milk yields. In her study, the 27-year-old measured the heart rates and cortisol levels of cows to see how they cope when isolated. Cattle were penned on their own, with their best friend or with another cow they did not know for 30 minutes and their heart rates were measured at 15second intervals. The research showed cows were very social animals which often formed close bonds with friends in their herd, the Daily Mail reported. She said: When heifers have their preferred partner with them, their stress levels in terms of their heart rates are reduced compared with if theyre with a random individual. If we can encourage farmers to keep an eye out for those cows which like to keep their friends with them, it could have some real benefits, such as improving their milk yields and reducing stress for the animals, which is very important for their welfare. Ive spoken to a number of farmers who have said they do notice bonds building among their cows and some spending a lot of time together. McLennan pointed out that modern farming practices mean cows are often separated for visits from the vet or by farmers moving their stock around. We know re-grouping cows is a problem, because theres a high level of stress among animals as they try to integrate into a new group, she said. PTI Lahore: The Pakistani commission investigating the murder of journalist Syed Saleem Shahzad today summoned 16 reporters to appear before it on July 9 to record their statements. Following a meeting of the panel held in the Supreme Court's Lahore Registry, the commission's secretary Taimur Azmat said it had also asked the public to submit any information they may have on the abduction and killing of Shahzd but only two persons had approached the body in this regard. Coral genome sequenced Gastric bug protects

Melbourne: Australian scientists claim to have for the first time sequenced the genome of staghorn coral Acropora millepora a major component of Great Barrier Reef and coral reefs worldwide. Corals are the backbone of the Great Barrier Reef, fascinating millions of visitors with spectacular variety of shapes and flamboyant colours. However, they are under threat from the effects of climate change, pollution, and disease. Now, a new research shows that corals may look like simple animals but their DNA is surprisingly complex. In fact, corals have about the same number of genes as man, and many of them are remarkably like ours, say the scientists. Prof David Miller of James Cook University, one of the scientists in the project, said: The Pacific coral, Acropora millepora,

The availability of the genome sequence will enable major advances in the understanding of many aspects of coral biology, including the responses of corals to climate change, ocean acidification, pol-

The coral genome, comprising 28 chromosomes, is among the first animal genomes in the world to be sequenced entirely using Illumina sequencing technology, a recently emerging next generation sequencing method that produces huge numbers of short sequence reads each of around 100 letters.

London: A gut bug, H. pylori, which infects half the global population and causes gastritis, gastric and duodenal ulcers and stomach cancer, has been found to protect against allergy-induced asthma. Scientists from the University of Zurich, Switzerland and Johannes Gutenberg University, Germany, now reveal that the dramatic increase in asthma could be tied with the disappearance of H. pylori from Western societies. Asthma symptoms are shortness of breath, wheezing, coughing, etc. H. pylori is often killed off with antibiotics as a precaution, even if the patient does not have any complaints or symptoms,

reports the Journal of Clinical Investigation. When researchers infected mice with H. pylori, a day or two after birth, they developed tolerance to the bug and took strong, asthma-inducing allergens in their stride, according to a Zurich statement. Mice that were not infected with H. pylori until they had reached adulthood, however, had a much weaker defence. IANS

Pigeon vision can teach autopilots fly more accurately

Washington: Pigeons ability to navigate through forests quickly and accurately is inspiring new developments in robotics and autopilot technology. Scientists from Harvard University trained pigeons to fly through an artificial forest with a tiny camera attached to their heads, literally giving a birds-eye view. Attaching the camera to the bird as well as filming them from either side means we can reconstruct both what the bird sees and how it moves, says Huai-Ti Lin, who led the research, with his background in flying remote control airplanes himself. The methods pigeons use to navigate through difficult environments could be used as a model for autopilot technology. Pigeons, with 300 degree panoramic vision, are well suited to this task because this wrap-round vision allows them to assess obstacles on either side. They can also stabilise their vision and switch rapidly between views using what is called a head saccade, a small rapid movement of the head, according to a Harvard statement. Researchers also showed that the birds have other skills that would be important for autopiloted machines, for example they tend to choose the straightest routes. This is a very efficient way of getting through the forest, because the birds have to do less turns and therefore use less energy, says Lin. Another interesting find is that pigeons seem to exit the forest heading in exactly the same direction as when they entered, in spite of all the twist and turns they made in the forest, he says. When using a robot or an unmanned aircraft it would be invaluable to simply provide it with the coordinates of the destination without having to give it detailed information of all the obstacles it might meet on the way. If we could develop the technology to follow the same methods as birds, we could let the robot get on with it without giving it any more input, says Lin. IANS

that can fly, hover, glide

London: A new versatile design of micro air vehicle (MAV) is inspired by a particular bird called Swift. This design of MAVs or unmanned aerial vehicles, would enable them to flap their wings, hover and glide to ensure good quality images from any on-board camera. In birds, the combination of demanding tasks like takeoff, travelling long distances, manoeuvring in confined areas and landing is daily practice, explains doctoral researcher William Thielicke, from Biomimetics-Innovation-Centre in Germany. This innovative design was inspired by one bird in particular, the Swift. We know that Swifts are very manoeuvrable and they can glide efficiently, he adds. So we thought these birds would be a very good starting point for an energy efficient flapping-wing MAV, says Thielicke, according to an Innovation Centre statement. While fixed wing MAVs are energy efficient, their manoeuvrability is low. The new design would allow the flapping wing MAV to glide, improving energy efficiency and ensuring good images but when needed it can also slow its flight and manoeuvre in confined spaces. Although the models are not yet ready to be used, initial tests are positive and we hope that this design will combine the best of both worlds, says Thielicke.

The film is Salman Khans debut production and he screened it for Ambika Soni in Delhi. Ambika Soni has recommended that tax should be exempted. Its only the states who have the right, the central government doesnt have the authority. They can only recommend. Hope that tax is exempted. If it happens, it would be really good, Bahl told IANS. Releasing July 8, Chillar Party is about a gang of innocent yet feisty kids who lead a carefree and fun-filled life. It shows how they fight together the big bad world of politics when a mean politician endangers their friend Bheedus life. Taking up direction was not a very conscious decision, said Bahl. Nitesh and I were writing the story for a year-and-a-half every weekend. When we finished writing the story we thought of writing the screenplay. When we got the screenplay we thought lets write the dialogues. Once we finished that we said when we have shaped the story let us direct the film, Bahl said.
