All About Mutual Funds

Rising expenses, childrens education, unexpected emergencies and finally retirement the demands on peoples money are ever-rising. And savings alone are not enough to meet them all. Making judicious equity investments though can make their money work harder for them. However, most people are reluctant to invest as they find it very puzzling. More so, they dont have the time to monitor the stock markets. What is the way then to help you achieve your financial needs and goals? The answer is mutual funds. Here are a few things about mutual funds that you must know in order to benefit from them:
What are mutual funds? A mutual fund is a professionally managed collective investment scheme that pools money from many investors. This money is then invested in stocks, bonds, short-term money market instruments, and/or other securities. Types of mutual funds Mutual funds can broadly be classified as open ended or close ended. While open ended funds are available for subscription and repurchase on a continuous basis and do not have a fixed maturity period, close ended funds are open for subscription only during a specified period at the time of launch of the scheme and have a stipulated maturity period. They can further be classified according to the investment objective as: Growth or equity funds: The aim of growth funds is to provide capital appreciation over medium to long term. Such schemes normally invest a major part of their corpus in equities and have comparatively high risks. Debt funds: The objective of growth funds is to generate steady returns while preserving your capital. They invest only in fixed income instruments like company bonds, de bentures and government securities. Balanced funds: These funds invest in both equity and debt in varying proportions and earns regular income. So, their average returns and risks also fall somewhere in between. How do mutual funds score over equities? Unlike equity Investments, mutual fund investments do not require your clients to analyze and track companies and the ways of the market. Also they help them stay less affected by the fall in the prices of one particular stock as their returns are derived by overall performance of various stocks that the company invests in. Whats the right time to buy and sell mutual funds? The right time to buy mutual funds is when the prices of the funds are low or falling. However, the holding period should be determined by the market conditions and they should not be sold before the market turns around. In fact, a greater holding period offers greater chance to benefit. It also offers greater surety in returns. What are SIPs? A systematic investment plan allows your clients to invest in a fund at regular intervals rather than a lump sum one time amount. SIPs are based on the principle of rupee cost averaging which makes a fall in their schemes NAV work to the investors advantage. When the NAV falls because of a fall in the market, they accumulate more units at lower rates while it restrains them from going overboard in a rising market by giving them fewer units at those higher levels. Further, by staying invested for a long period of time, they profit from the appreciation equities tend to show over the long term. How do I select the right mutual funds? While choosing a mutual fund, its important to keep your objectives, risk appetite and investment budget in mind. You should also keep in mind the performance of the fund over the last couple of years and check the exit load charged by a particular scheme which is charged as a percentage of NAV and has the effect of reducing returns by that amount.

By keeping these simple things in mind, you can make mutual fund investments that work to your advantage and help in realizing your financial goals.

Investment Outlook
Equity Investment Outlook
Equity markets have been kept perplexed by the ambiguous data flow from both domestic and major global economies. The benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty posted marginal declines of 3.3% each, while MSCI Emerging Markets index fell by 2.9% and MSCI World shed 2.5%. In domestic markets, Banking, Power, Oil & Gas and Metals stocks dragged the benchmarks lower; whereas, FMCG and Healthcare were relative outperformers. The Central Statistical Organization (CSO) reported Q4 GDP growth numbers which surprise the street on lower side. The GDP growth in the quarter (Mar 2011) was at 7.8%. This compares with 8.3% registered in Dec 2010 (revised up from 8.2%). Agricultural growth, albeit, lower than previous quarters 9.9% YoY remained strong at 7.5%. Consumption expenditure picked up marginally to 7.5% in (vs. 7.4% earlier), though private consumption decelerated to 7.5% (vs. 8.6% earlier), and government consumption accelerated to 5% (vs. 1.9% earlier). Investment growth also decelerated to 6.5% in Mar 2011, compared with 7.8% in the previous quarter. These numbers clearly highlight the investors fears of overspending by the Government and the dour state of private sector investments. The fourth quarter result season is nearing conclusion and all the Sensex companies have reported numbers. For Sensex (ex-energy) Revenue growth for the quarter stood at 24% YoY, EBITDA growth at 20% and Net Profit growth at 7% YoY. This evidently shows the margin pressure corporate India is facing from rising costs of inputs and services. Healthcare, Consumer Staples and Technology companies reported better than expected numbers, while Financials, Telecom and Utilities showed numbers lower than estimates. At current levels, we believe that market valuations are reasonably attractive. The temperate GDP growth and softer profit margins have been adequately digested and built into forecasts for current years earnings. There is a good possibility that the Central government would use this post election time to make some long-pending policy decisions and also set the ball rolling for government backed infrastructure projects. As we look ahead, second half of the financial year could see execution of projects picking up, inflation coming down and policy tightening getting over. This could provide good visibility and greater confidence in the next years earnings growth, which is currently estimated at 15-17%. Given this base scenario, markets are likely to yield a rich harvest over the next twelve-twenty four months. International scenario remains fluid with lingering concerns over events like progress on resolution of Greece debt situation, conclusion of QE II by the US Fed, state of affairs in MENA region etc. Even though global news flow could influence investor sentiments and induce volatility into domestic equity markets, we believe that such opportunities should be used to build positions in equity assets. In fact, valuations for some of the mid-sized companies have fallen ad absurdum. It is, therefore, likely that any market up move would see broad based participation.

Debt Investment Outlook

Government bond markets in the month of May traded with distinct investor bearishness as indicated by the yield movement of the 10-year benchmark bond that hardened nearly 30bps to close for the month at 8.40% levels. Inflation print of 8.66% for the month of April that is well above central banks medium term 6% guidance would therefore be an over-riding factor to decide monetary policy actions in the coming months. The previous RBI credit policy dated April 27 2011 delivered a 50bps hike across policy rates in an attempt to curb the surging inflationary pressures may be taken as over-tightening since domestic inflation is anyhow strongly linked to global commodity prices. However market participants are still braced for another 50-75bps hike in the remaining part of the calendar year 2011. Our in-house view is of a repo level (the independent policy rate) of around 7.75-8% from the current 7.25%, the balance 50-75bps hike being front loaded in the June-September period. Growth sentiments in the economy on the other hand are progressively getting weaker, also validated by the GDP print of 7.8% for the January-March 2011 quarter justifiably giving in to the tightening interest rate stance of the central bank. While we do believe the central bank would prioritize its prerogative of price stability even at the cost of short term growth, our views of a downward correction in global commodity prices amid a mid-cycle economic slowdown and monsoons-induced decline in food prices now may hint at RBIs switch to a neutral rate stance sooner than currently priced by market consensus. We believe it may be an opportune to time to be constructive on long term rates in the coming quarter as incremental inflationary pressures abate and the weakness currently seen in the global economic data (contractions in US Non-farm payrolls and ADP employment survey numbers, weak Korean industrial growth and the Eurozone debt problems) continues. Additionally a recent admission of the finance ministry to the sensitivity for rising governments cost of borrowing may also support bond prices in the medium term. The 10-year bond yield has declined by over 15bps to 8.25% levels in June first week in response to the aforementioned factors. Banking system liquidity for the month of May closed within the INR 50,000-60,000 cr. range, better than what market participants had expected. The month of June would see a bigger deficit as it is marked by advance tax outflows of around INR 50,000-55,000 cr. taking the peak liquidity deficit to around INR 100,000 cr. by midJune. Short term rates therefore are expected to harden from current levels. Corporate bond yield curve has flattened significantly in the intermediate to longer term maturities (2-years and above). The larger investor community believes that the central banks battle against inflation may end soon as they rely on front-loaded hikes of another 50-75bps even though liquidity would remain in a prolonged deficit in all times as recommended by the operating procedure of the monetary policy. All in all we believe inflation would remain in high single digits and peak out in the coming 2-3 months while growth will continue to give in to higher interest rates GDP growth in FY12 may well report a sub-8% level relative to 8.5% growth in FY11. As the monetary stance changes to a pleasant neutral (keeping policy rates unchanged) in no more than a quarter the longer-end of the yield curve is expected to soften from current levels, hence our view on building up portfolio duration

Tax Savings Solutions

What are Tax Savings Solutions? Our Tax Savings Solutions help to reduce your tax burden and at the same time, aim to grow your money through equity investments.

Who can benefit from Tax Savings Solutions? Tax saving is important, especially when investors can save up to ` 30,900 in taxes! Section 80C of the Income Tax Act, 1961 provides options to save tax by reducing the taxable income by up to Rs. 1 lakh. But, wealth creation is also important. Isnt it? Thats why these solutions are ideal for investors who would like to create wealth along with tax saving.

Benefits of Tax Savings Solutions: Low lock-in period: Your money is locked-in for just 3 years, as against the much longer lock-in periods in other options. Potential to earn dividends: While your money is locked-in for 3 years, you may opt for the dividend option and can receive returns in the form of tax-free dividends during this time. This feature is unique only to tax saving solutions from mutual funds. Earn market linked returns: Since investments are made in stocks of Indian companies, the value of your investment moves with the stock market. Although it comes with market related risks, your money is diversified i.e. spread out across stocks of multiple companies and is being monitored by an investment expert with an aim to minimize such risks. Tax-free returns: When you withdraw your investment after 3 years, the returns are totally tax free. Yes, you save taxes on both, your initial investment and also on the returns.

The Financial Solution (Tax Saving Solution) stated above is ONLY for highlighting the many advantages perceived from investments in Mutual Funds but does not in any manner, indicate or imply, either the quality of any particular Scheme or guarantee any specific performance/returns. Tax deduction available u/s 80C of the Income Tax Act, 1961 is subject to conditions specified therein. Investors are requested to consult their tax advisor before investing for individual nature of tax benefits.

Methodology of Ranking
*Value Research Ratings - Ranking Methodology and Disclaimer Value Research Fund Ratings are a composite measure of historical risk-adjusted returns. In the case of equity and hybrid funds this rating is based on the weighted average monthly returns for the last 3 and 5-year periods. Four stars indicate that a fund is in the next 22.5%, middle 35% receive three stars, the next 22.5% are assigned two stars while the bottom 10% receive one star.
