Up Up and Away: Heading Up North Catmon

It was a sunny Monday morning and the Block B Catmon Immersionists were all gathered at the USC-TC Portal Waiting Shed waiting for the bus. When the bus arrived, the class and the Clinical Instructors decided to divide the class into two groups since the bus cant accommodate us all with our personal belongings and block-owned things. The first batch went with our big and heavy bags. They arrived in Catmon at around 11am, had lunch and took charge of the house arrangement. The second batch were picked up by 12nn and arrived in Catmon at around 3pm. Everyone was then busy arranging their personal belongings, finding their own sleeping areas and continued the house arrangement for everyones convenience. Later that afternoon, Mrs. Laarne Pontillas, a Catmonanon and a faculty member of USC-CN, visited us and gave us instructions and advices regarding our 18-day immersion at Catmon. We had our first dinner as a class at around 7pm. We were given sufficient time take a bath and fix ourselves and after which we prayed the rosary and prepared to sleep.

In the morning of April 26, 2011, Tuesday, we had our courtesy call to pay respect to the Barangay and Municipal officials of Brgy. Flores, Catmon and to let them know of our goals and objectives as immersionists of the said place. We first visited the Brgy. Flores Barangay Hall. We were able to meet a few of the Brgy. Health Workers who were having their Ligtas Tigdas that day, then we met the Brgy. Captain Hon. Myrna Ares. Barangay Captain: Unsa man inyong katuyuan dinhi? Gwen Danielle Villar: Kami mga estudyante sa University of San Carlos-College of Nursing nagatuo nga ang mga lumulupyo sa komunidad/barangay sila mismo maoy mkahatag ug dakong tabang alang sa paglambo niini.
Francis Gerard Redido: Naa pud mi para mugiya ug mutudlo nila ug values & skills. Sila makat-on kanamo ug kami makat-on pud kanila. Barangay Capatain: Kamo mag share sa mga knowledge nga makabarog ang katawhan. Dili pareha sauna nag more on dole out, ato jud silang tudluan nga makabarog nga sila ra. The letter of intent was then given right after the conversation with Brgy. Captain. Some students checked on records before leaving the Brgy. Hall and after which we headed to the Municipal Hall to meet the Municipal Mayor. On our way to the Municipal Hall, we passed by the RHU to see the offices available and be familiar with the people there. We then continued heading to the municipal hall and upon arrival, we were directed to proceed to the Mayors office, of which the Mayor was staying. The letter of intent was handed over to the Municipal Mayor Hon. Dan Jusay. Mayor: So welcome kamo dinhi sa Catmon, hain man mo nag stay? Mrs. Pontillas: Naa na sila sa Katambisan Mayor, balay ni tatay John. Ako ni silang gi-suroy suroy akong gipakita ang Catmon. Francis Gerard Redido: Makatababng sab mi sa mga tawo- skills, values, potentials, effective leadership ug mga activities diin makakat-on sila namo ug kami sab makat-on nila. Mayor: Pasalamat ko nga naa mo dinhi aron makatabang sa mga tawo. Ako mag garantiya sa inyong safety dinhi sa Catmon. Kung naa moy mga concern report lang mo sa Police station. Di manjud na nato malikayan ang ako lang ikapanghabog dinhi nga respetado ang mga tawo ug wala mi anang mga fraternity. Kung muapil mo sa mga kalihukan mas maayo nuon. After the conversation with the Municipal Mayor, we left the municipal hall and preceded to the Police Station, where we met the Officer-in-Charge since the Chief of Police was on leave that time. We introduced ourselves and gave the list of names to the OIC. Our next and final stop for the morning tour was the San Guillermo Parish Church, where we had the chance to meet persons we can approach regarding our spiritual activities. After the morning tour, we went to back to the house to have our lunch and take some rest. In the afternoon, we continued with our tour and at the same time our ocular visit around Brgy. Flores. The long walk to each Sitio was a way for us to get familiarized with the place and its people. We arrived at home late in the evening, had our dinner, prayed the rosary, had ARFA then slept.

April 27, 2011 MEETING WITH THE MHO & SITIO TOUR Lets sweat it out! In the morning we went to the RHU to meet with the Municipal Health Officer, Dr. Edna L. Orlanes. Naa mi dri para makatabang sa mga lumulupyo arun dili sila ma left behind sa other communities with regards to issues sa ilang panlawas ug sa mga health services pud.

Dr. Orlanes: Recently lang naay outbreak sa cholera, pwede mu makatabangug health teaching sa mga tawo. Very good kaayo. I-assess jud ninyo ang weakness para jud Makita ninyo ang kalahian. Mark Nio Flores: Mutabang sab mi ug plano para masulbad ang problema, mu giya nila ug muhatag ug suporta sa ilang mga activities. Dr. Orlanes: I-check ninyo ang mga sources sa water, kung unsa man gane inyong makita i-refer lang ninyo dinhi. Particular sa sa waste management especially katong nay mga piggery tan-awa lang sab na ninyo. Unya daghan kaayong salamat sa inyong pag-anhe. After the conversation with the MHO, we headed back home to have our early lunch since we still have to continue our ocular survey with the other sitios in the afternoon. We visited Sitio Upper Bagalnga which was our priority Sitio. We talked with the residents, played with the children and assessed some of the sitios problems. We passed by the baybayon before heading home and arrived in the house at around 5pm. We had our short rest, then had dinner, prayed the rosary, had ARFA then slept. April 28, 2011 LETS GET STARTED

Todays the official start of serious work. The class was divided into 7 groups and each group was given a particular task. Some groups were assigned to gather information from the different RHU departments and from the Brgy. Hall while one group was tasked to make the Ghant Chart. The last group was assigned to make the letter for the Brgy. Captain regarding the proposed meeting with all the Brgy. Officials and Brgy. Organization heads. In the afternoon, we went to Sitio Hantoy, which was a quite far sitio. It was a long tiring walk going there but we all had fun. Later in the evening after our dinner, each group presented the gathered information to the whole class. We then prayed the rosary and then slept. April 29, 2011 and IT HAS OFFICIALLY STARTED With the same group we had yesterday, we were now assigned to the 7 different Sitios of Brgy. Flores., namely Lower Bagalnga, Canseja, Sentro, Santo Nio, Hantoy, Bigo and Ribican. Each group must conduct a community survey in their assigned sitios. As for our priority sitio which is Upper Bagalnga, everyone was given responsibility in conducting the house to house visit and interview and the community assessment.

April 30, 2011 this is WORK & getting to know YOU In the morning of this day we continued our community survey in our respective Sitio. In the afternoon, we had our first meeting with the Brgy. Flores SK officials together with Mrs. Pontillas at the immersion house. The officials who met with us were SK Chairman Hon. Queennie Arni E. Pontillas, SK Councilors Mona, Ezel and Rose, and the Vice Chairman on Committee on Health and Social Services. After the short meeting, we went to the Brgy. Flores chapel to meet with the Brgy. officials, BHWs, and Brgy. organization heads for the Presentation and Validation of our observed Community Health Problems. Brgy. Captain Hon. Myrna Ares and some of the residents of Brgy.Flores attended the meeting and identified their Health Needs and suggested solutions to their identified problems. Verbatim: Last April 30th this year, Saturday, we called a meeting to meet the barangay officials and important persons from different organizations. The barangay captain, Hon. Myrna Ares was there together with the residents of barangay Flores. Unfortunately, the barangay councilors were not there,

some SK officials and the barangay health workers as well. Despite the absence of the said people it did not stopped us to continue the meeting. We had our registration and gave name tags to the participants. We have started the meeting around 3 oclock in the afternoon with a prayer, greetings and introduction of ourselves. The agenda of the meeting was to talk about the environmental, maternal and other problems of barangay Flores and what to do about it. We have asked them to identify their own problems and let me decide for the solutions of such problems. We, the immersionists, also stated our own identified problems that were not mentioned by the people. Although the people there was not that participative but still they were able to formulate solutions on how to solve or manage their problems. They decided to have backyard gardening and tree growing to manage the changing climate, to formulate an ordinance that people should segregate their garbage to have a clean environment, to have mothers class or health teachings to the people about family planning and its importance to let the people be aware of the pros and cons of early motherhood, to have a good lifestyle and to manage stress to avoid hypertension, to have

proper food handling, preparation to avoid, and good hygiene to prevent illnesses and diseases, to have a mothers class to discuss the importance of mothers guidance to their children so as to avoid accidents to their children. We had a recapitulation after the open forum about the problems they identified and we, the immersionists identified as well and the corresponding solution to each problem. After the recapitulation we have ended the meeting with a closing remark to thank all the people who attended the said meeting, had a prayer and we gave them snacks. It was late in the evening when we started making the banners for each sitio which shall be used in the opening of the Summer League the following day. After being busy with the bannermaking, we prayed the rosary, had ARFA then slept.

Flores Summer League. In the afternoon, we continued our community survey in our respective Sitio and at around 5pm, we all went to the Seawall for the Opening of the Brgy. Flores Summer League. There was a parade, a contest of muses representing each sitio and lastly a basketball exhibition game played by the USC-Block B Boys vs. Brgy. Flores SK. The game ended with a score of 60-59 in favor of Brgy. Flores SK. May 2, 2011 All for WORKSHOP The planning for the Summer Workshop begins. We were asked to divide ourselves according to our chosen committee, which included the Singing, Dance, Karate, Arts, and Reading and Writing Committee. While each committee was busy planning for their activities, the Sitio Hantoy group was tasked to make registration and admission forms and posters for announcement about the different summer workshops. They went to the SK Resource Center and to Sitio Canseja to finally open the registration & enrolment. In the afternoon, we continued with our community survey in our respective Sitio.

May 1, 2011 INTEGRATION Keep Holy the Sabbath Day! Everyone woke up early to attend the 5am Holy Mass in San Guillermo Parish Church. After the mass, we had our breakfast and at around 8am we continued with our banner-making and preparation for the Opening of the Brgy.

May 3, 2011 WORKSHOPS Another sun-kissed skin day! The Sitio groups continued with our community survey in their respective Sitio early in the morning, except for the Sitio Bigo and Sitio Hantoy groups who went to Upper Bagalnga to conduct the community survey there. While others were having the community survey, selected persons were assigned at the RHU to assist in Vital Signs taking and some were to continue with the registration for the different summer workshops. The summer workshops officially started in the afternoon at exactly at 1:30pm. An hour was allotted for all workshops, thus it ended around 2:30 pm. After the workshops, the Sitio groups went back to their respective Sitio to continue the community survey, except for those selected persons who were assigned to prepare for the meeting with the Brgy.Officials to plan for the upcoming Operation Tuli at Brgy. Flores. The session started 5pm and was presided by Brgy. Councilor Rene B.Colinares, in behalf of Brgy.Captain Hon. Myrna Ares who could not join us at that time. Together with Hon. Rene were the BHWs Ms. Ana M. Molinas, Ms. Winterlita M. Colita and Ms. Ely D. Estenzo. The meeting started with a prayer and a short welcome address. The first part of the meeting was the presentation of minutes of the last meeting which was about the problems

identified by the community people and the USC-CN students and the solutions to the problems which were given by the community people themselves. The next part of the meeting was the discussion on the preparations needed for Operation Tuli. The USC-CN students presented the list of instruments, medicines, equipments and other manpower needed for the success of the said event. The flow of the event and suggestions with regards to the venue was discussed. Hon. Rene and BHWs also had their chance to raise their concerns most especially on the medical supplies and medicines. We encouraged them to make a letter with our help so that we will be able to borrow supplies & equipment needed. Without any hesitancy, Hon. Rene and the BHWs gave us their positive feedback and their assurance of their help and presence. The meeting was Cebu here we come!

Today was also the the second day of our summer workshops. After the workshops, the Sitio groups continued the community survey in their respective Sitio while randomly selected persons went to Brgy. Macaas to join a big celebration- the opening and the blessing of the Macaas Day Care Center and 50th birthday of Miss Monica Tita Moning Farag ,who donated the land and sponsored the building of the mentioned Day Care Center.
