MUMBAI: Even as the Indian toothpaste industry is growing at about 15% annually, Hindustan Unilever is seeing a slowdown in growth. While smaller players such as Dabur India have gained marketshare, HUL has grown slower than the industry average due to lesser brands compared to its competitors. According to AC Nielsen figures for the January-October period, the Rs 3,976-crore oral care category (toothpaste and toothpowder together) grew 14.5%, with Dabur s oral care brands recording a combined on-year value growth of 19.2%, while Colgate rose 14.5% and Hindustan Lever 13.8%. Margin profile would be robust for Colgate since it has a mixed portfolio, said an analyst with a Mumbai-based brokerage. (However) HUL s oral care is not doing that great because while Dabur and Colgate have a mixed portfolio, HUL has only premium offerings. HUL should introduce more oral care brands at low-entry price points for a better market share, the analyst added. Within the toothpaste segment, Dabur brands Dabur Red and Babool have shown 19.1% and 19% value growth, respectively. By market share, however, Colgate remains the clear leader with a share of about 33.1%, followed closely by Hindustan Lever at 29.8%. Dabur s market share is 9.4%. Penetration level of toothpastes is 48.6% in India, of which 74.9% is in urban areas while 37.6% is in the rural areas. Colgate and HUL together account for over two-thirds of the organised toothpaste market. The major brands are Close-Up, Pepsodent, Colgate Dental Cream, Cibaca Top, Dabur Red and Babool. Within toothpastes (excluding toothpowders), HUL s Close-Up and Pepsodent grew 18.8% and 8.4%, respectively, in the January-October period while Colgate grew 15.1% during the period. Cibaca recorded a healthy 12.6% growth. The growth in toothpaste market has been largely driven by a consumer shift in rural markets from toothpowders to toothpastes, an overall increase in demand and some price increases in the industry, said Dabur India COO VS Sitaram. Also, a higher degree conversion from non-users to users has helped this market grow. Earlier, consumers were shifting from datun and other such homemade options to toothpowders and then to toothpastes. But now, more and more people are directly moving from datun to toothpastes, he

added. According to a recent report released by Merrill Lynch: Rising input costs and intensification of competition are putting pressure on Colgate s earnings growth potential. Prices of key raw materials like sorbitol, which is a corn derivative, have been rising sharply over the last few months. We believe this will put pressure on margins of Colgate as rising competition will inhibit Colgate s ability to increase retail prices.

With fancy advertisement, Pepsodent toothpaste has able to gain popularity and capture the Indian market to a large extend but in terms of quality and effectiveness in whitening the teeth ,I dont think Pepsodent toothpaste are in any way good. I have used the product over a period of time and so thought of sharing my experience and view on Pepsodent toothpaste with all the surfers online.

Pepsodent toothpaste is good to fight bad breathe but it is no way effective in give the teeth that shiny and super white teethes which the advertisements promise also it is no good especially during bad tooth ache and brushing with Pepsodent just doesnt ease off the bad pain during severe toothache. I have the habit of taking gutkas and that stains the teeth which looks very ugly, I am addicted to gutkas and cant stop taking it so I have been trying my best at least to remove the stain but even after bushing regularly with Pepsodent toothpaste for over a month I couldnt find the slightest of change, so now I have switched over to Dabur Red toothpaste which is far better than Pepsodent toothpaste. Comparatively Dabur Red Toothpaste is cheaper and far more effective than Pepsodent toothpaste in fighting stains and yellow teeth. So dont get carried away by fancy advertisement use your brains and go for some better toothpaste which has good value for money, Dabur Red toothpaste has proved its value for money as far as I am concerned but it took me sometime to find out the best prod
