Student learning assessment (e.g., critical thinking and mile marker) will be administered. Pharmacy practice reviews will be conducted to include the following: physical assessment; pharmaceutical calculations; patient case presentations; pharmacokinetics; and, journal club. In addition students will complete updates on blood borne pathogens and universal precautions, portfolios, and the Capstone research project requirement. Advance Pharmacy Practice Experience program requirements will be reviewed. Course Goal: Overall the goal of this course is to orient the student pharmacists to the forth year APPE program. Students will review elements of the pharmacy curriculum (didactic and applied) to enhance the successful completion of APPE s. Introduction to Pharmacy Practice Experience Prior to the start of the course, students should have successfully completed Phar 6325, Professional Practice V Applied Practice Skills. Course Learning Objectives: Upon completion of this course the students should be able to: 1. APPE Program a. Describe the ACPE Standards and Guidelines pertaining to the APPE program b. Describe the APPE Policies, Procedures, and requirements 2. Complete the following assessments: a. Mile Marker Examination b. Health Sciences Reasoning, Examination (critical thinking) 3. Demonstrate functional knowledge and application of the following skills: a. Physical Assessment b. Pharmaceutical Calculations c. Patient Case Presentations d. Pharmacokinetics

e. Discuss L-A-D-M-E, and the basic physiologic and biopharmaceutic principles underlying drug movements i. Define basic pharmacokinetic principles and parameters presented ii. Describe and identify drug Cp-t data as being suitably described by either single-, two-, or multi-compartment models, and state differences as well as similarities between these models iii. Recall and apply basic pharmacokinetic equations in describing drug movements f. Journal Club i. Apply previous knowledge of research study design and statistical methods to the evaluation of clinical studies ii. Review and discuss the principles of evidenced based medicine literature review and journal club iii. Given primary literature, be able to critique and evaluate the literature for a health care audience g. Blood Borne Pathogens and Universal Precautions 4. Describe the required portfolio elements to be maintained during the APPE year 5. Describe the required elements for successful completion of the Capstone Research Project Course Assessment: PHAR 6421 utilizes a pass/fail grading scale. To pass the course, all course goals and objectives must be satisfied through attendance at all course meetings and the completion of all course activities and assessments. Students must achieve a pass and complete a final course evaluation to successfully complete course. Failure to complete all course requirements within the designated timeframe will result in the assignment of a grade of incomplete until all requirements are satisfied. Students who ultimately fail to complete all course requirements will be assigned a grade of fail and be required to repeat the course. Attendance and Participation Policy: To pass the PHAR 6421 course, students are expected to attend and participate in all course activities. Failure to complete the entire course, unless written approval is obtained in advance by the course coordinator, may result in automatic failure of the PHAR 6421 course. In case of an emergency or illness, the student should contact the course coordinator promptly via telephone or a voice mail message. All course hours missed must be made up at the discretion of the course coordinator.

Other class meeting dates: Students will return to campus at 1PM on the last Friday of each module to turn in evaluation forms (that were not submitted electronically) and participate in mandatory case conferences (Medicine and Ambulatory Care). The dates are as follows:

July 15, 2011; August 26, 2011; October 7, 2011; November 18, 2011; February 17, 2012; March 30, 2012; May 11, 2012. As per OEE policy, failure to attend the class meeting, unless given an excused absence by the APPE Coordinator, will result in one letter grade reduction for that module.
