Introducing DSMs new waterborne two-component resins
Responding to the growing demand for VOC compliant high performance coatings, DSM NeoResins+ is introducing a new range of resins. Among the finest works of art in our resin system collection - which meet the worlds latest and anticipated environmental regulations - is the new DSM NeoResins+ waterborne two-component polyol product range. The new products enable the creation of Perfect Layers on your substrates, among others exhibiting high blister free film build. Part of the new range are NOVOS (NO Volatile Organic Solvents) based products.

With NOVOS resins a new class of polyols for high performance waterborne two-component polyurethane coatings has been developed. Because NOVOS polymers are co-solvent free (enabling VOC <100g/l ready to spray), they combine freedom of (co-solvent) formulation with excellent performance and appearance characteristics, resulting in Perfect Layers, comparable to solventborne two-component polyurethane systems. With NOVOS, DSM NeoResins+ demonstrates the Art of Innovation.

Resistance & appearance properties

DSM NeoResins+s new waterborne resins for two-component polyurethane coatings form a solid product portfolio for the formulation of coatings with good resistance and appearance properties. Depending on the hydroxyl value desired, the portfolio allows for high cross-linking density of the coatings yielding optimal resistances. The appearance properties can be compared to solvent borne coatings, with a very high gloss and good leveling properties.

Co-solvent free: allows freedom to formulate

Within the new product range of DSM NeoResins+, the NOVOS products allow complete freedom of co-solvent choice. Alternatively, NOVOS resins allow formulation of extremely low VOC (<100 g/l) coatings, as the resins are completely co-solvent free1. The new resin range is the basis for very low VOC coatings, without compromising on coating performance and appearance properties.

Blister free film thickness

DSM NeoResins+s new portfolio of resins for waterborne two-component polyurethane coatings enables the formation of high performance coatings that allow the application of thick layers (>100m dry at room temperature curing) without the formation of blisters and craters in the coating; a key requirement for metal coatings. The improvement in maximum achievable layer application is a welcome property as this is a common challenge for waterborne polyurethane coatings. The new portfolio of DSM NeoResins+ allows the formulation of Perfect Layers with properties comparable to solvent based two-component polyurethane coatings.

The high hydroxyl value resins (4-5% OH on solid resin) are suitable for high end metal topcoat applications such as rail and commercial vehicles. NeoCryl XK-540 and XK-541 have hydroxyl values of 4.2% OH on solid resin. NeoCryl XK-541 is a co-solvent free modification of NeoCryl XK-540, allowing freedom of co-solvent choice and allowing formulation of very low VOC coatings (VOC <100g/l). High resistant clear as well as solid color waterborne two-component PUR topcoats can be formulated with a high blister free film thickness. NeoCryl XK-555 (5.0% OH on solid resins), exhibits extreme high resistances and is therefore suitable for anti-graffiti and easy-to-clean topcoats. NeoCryl XK-530 and XK-531 (hydroxyl values of 3.3% OH on solid resin) are suitable for fast drying ACE and metal general topcoat applications. NeoCryl XK-531 is a co-solvent free modification of NeoCryl XK-530. Clear as well as solid color waterborne two-component PUR topcoats can be formulated with high blister free film thickness. NeoCryl XK-531 allows freedom of co-solvent formulation or VOC <100g/l (ready to spray). NeoCryl XK-103 is a very fast drying resin suitable for structured or low gloss topcoat and primer-surfacer.

These products can be used as clear as well as solid colour waterborne top-coats for consumer electronic, automotive plastic and windmill blade applications, that need extremely high physical and chemical resistances. The NeoCryl XK-555 is one of the best products in terms of the new standards for the interior automotive OEM.

DSM NeoResins+ is an established player in the field of waterborne 2K PUR binders for Industrial Wood applications. Such resins are beneficially used in e.g. high resistance coatings found in bath rooms and kitchens, as well as medium resistant general purpose furniture. The DSM NeoResins+ product range covers both 2-component as well as 1-component curing resins, allowing to choose for optimal performance (2K) or maximum economy in use (1K).

Already DSM NeoResins+ holds a specifically designed portfolio for 1K and 2K parquet and concrete flooring applications. The highlighted, new waterborne two-component polyol product range as primarily designed for metal protection however also provides spin-off application possibilities towards the field of 2K PUR floor coatings. Dedicated formulation development is in progress to further optimize application on parquet and concrete flooring.
