Applications
TheIDCAPDadditiveprovidesexcellentcuttingsencapsulationbyadsorbingontotheclay surfacesandformingaprotectivefilmthatpreventscuttingsfromstickingtoeachotherortothe shakerscreens.TheIDCAPDencapsulatorlimitsdilutionratesandlowgravitysolidsloadingby preventingclaysolidsfromdispersingintothemudsystem.Theproductiseffectiveinawide rangeofbasebrinesincludingseawater,saturatedNaCl,andKCl,butshouldnotbeusedin calciumbrines.TypicalconcentrationsoftheIDCAPDadditiverangebetween24lb/bbl(5.7to 11.4kg/m3). Duetothelowmolecularweightofthispolymer,themixingprocessrequireslessshearthan polymerswithhighermolecularweights.Theresultingfluidwillpassthroughfineshaker screenswithoutblinding.TheIDCAPDagentshouldbeaddedtothemudsystemviapremix,to ensureproperhydrationandshearing,butcanbemixeddirectlyintotheactivesystemifneeded. Bestresultsareobtainedwhenmixingthepolymerthroughapowerfulhopperandthenpassing oncethroughashearunit. TheIDCAPDadditiveconcentrationshouldbemonitoredusingalightabsorptionmethod.It isimportanttouseacalibrationcurvefortheIDCAPDadditivetodeterminetheamountoftotal encapsulatingpolymer.DetailedinstructionsregardingtheIDCAPDtestingprocedureare availablefromtheHoustonTechnicalServicesDepartment. DilutionrateswithpremixshouldbebasedonthedepletionrateoftheIDCAPDencapsulator. IDCAPDpremixconcentrationscanrangeashighas45lb/bbl(11.4to14.3kg/m),dependingon thedepletionrates. Recommendations:Totalhardnessshouldbetreatedoutfirstwithbicarbonate/sodaash. MaintainpHbelow10foroptimumperformance,whereapplicable.IDCAPDencapsulatordoes notcontainacrylamide,sohydrolysiswithNH3releaseisnotaproblem.
