(John Bongiovi) musician, songwriter Born: 3/2/1962 Birthplace: Sayreville, New Jersey

He gained fame in the mid-1980s as the lead singer of the hard-rock band Bon Jovi, whose albums Slippery When Wet and New Jersey Jon Bon Jovi became multi-platinum sellers. He is also noted for composing the score and theme song (Blaze of Glory) for the movie Young Guns II (1990), which earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Song. He released a solo album called Blaze Of Glory (1990), which was inspired by the movie, but returned to his group gig with Keep The Faith (1992). He has also acted in several movies, including Moonlight and Valentino (1995) and Pay It Forward (2000).

Jon Bon Jovi posed that question to himself, and its worth pondering. You might think that a man whose band has sold more than 120 million records and played before tens of millions of fans in the course of an illustrious 26-year career would be content to rest on his considerable laurels, at least for a while. You might think that, but youd be wrong, and the new Bon Jovi album, The Circle, provides irrefutable proof. As its title suggests, The Circle marks a powerful reassertion of Bon Jovis commitment to the hard-hitting, uplifting rock & roll that has been the bands indelible signature since it began. The band share an abiding bond that informs and defines their music. It is a circle that remains unbroken. The album title, Bon Jovi explains, has several meanings. Some may say that with this album we have come full circle. Others may see The Circle as never ending. I see it as very hard to get in to and even harder to get out of, the singer says with a laugh. Having had 5 studio records in this decade, there are songs on each record that represent the world around us. And while they dont always like what they see, they try hard not to see the cup as half empty. From the new single We Werent Born To Follow to the powerful When We Were Beautiful, the songs are as uplifting and anthemic as anything Bon Jovi and Sambora have ever written.Another reason for the anthemic sound of THE CIRCLE is the re-emergence of Richie Sambora. This is meant to be a stadium, turn-the-guitars-back-up record, and thats a testament to having Richie at my side, Jon says. I cant tell you how much thats meant. With me and Richie, one and one makes three. That flame burns at the heart of The Circle. When We Were Beautiful shares its title with the superb Bon Jovi documentary by filmmaker Phil Griffin. Like the film, the song is atmospheric and haunting. It opens with a sense of crisis: The world is cracked/The sky is torn. Jon Bon Jovi hears the song as a true departure for the band. Thats a unique song, he says, Weve written hits, but this is

something more, this is something different. I didnt want to sugarcoat things. Those lyrics are factual. As a country and as people, we hit a wall. But the idea is to try to get back to when we were beautiful. The new studio album, The Circle, was produced by John Shanks, who also worked with the band on the two preceding Bon Jovi albums, Lost Highway (2007) and Have a Nice Day (2005). The album has an underlying positive theme that is apparent throughout the songs. Whether its questioning your vitality in Fast Cars, or asking what the future holds in Work for the Working Man, the songs are about the prospect of people having to find new directions in their lives. In these trying times every word relays the truth. So The Circle, then, like all of Bon Jovis best music, stares down the troubles that afflict our lives, and offers a bracing vision for overcoming those obstacles. Its stirring, and its an emotion that, strong as the album is, will find its most convincing expression on the concert stage. And this is why Bon Jovi have managed to play over 2600 concerts to over 34 million fans in over 50 countries. I cant believe Im even saying this, but I cant wait to go on the road again, Jon Bon Jovi exclaims.

Aerosmith hard-rock band

Coldplay
Rock Band Born: c. 1997 Birthplace: London, England Best known as: Performers of the Grammy-winning rock tune "Clocks" Coldplay's single "Clocks" won the Grammy Award for best record of 2003. The U.K. rock band is made up of vocalist Chris Martin (b. 2 March 1977), guitarist Johnny Buckland (b. 11 September 1977), bassist Guy Berryman (b. 12 April 1978) and drummer Will Champion (b. 31 July 1977). Formed in 1997, the band began playing gigs and released successful short recordings in the U.K. on their way to their first full-length album, Parachutes (2000). The single "Yellow" shot up the charts in the U.K., and frequent airplay on radio and MTV made it an international hit. After a tour of the U.S. in 2001, they released their second album, A Rush of Blood to the Head (including "Clocks") in 2002; it was hailed by critics as one of the best records of 2002. Known for their moody and melodic brand of guitar-oriented rock, the band has been favorably compared to Radiohead. Coldplay's other singles include "Trouble" and "The Scientist." Extra credit: Chris Martin married actress Gwyneth Paltrow in December of 2003... "Clocks" was included in the 2003 Grammys because A Rush of Blood to the Head was released late in 2002; releases from October 2002 through September 2003 were eligible.

When he was asked to name some of his favorite current bands a while back, Ringo Starr quickly tabbed Coldplay, proving once again that the former Beatle's good taste goes beyond his choice of musical mates. Students at London's University College, Coldplay busted out of the U.K. when their 2000 debut Parachutespowered by the radio fave Yellowsold more than 5 million copies. This follow-up is even better, and fans of acts like Radiohead, Travis, and Starsailor should lock into cuts like the gorgeous In My Place, the pulsating, piano-based splendor of Clocks, or the Easterntraces shimmering in and out of Daylight. Singer Chris Martin is a commanding presence and his soaring, multi-octave melodies drive the sound. But the rhythm section is air-tight and the songs are intricately arranged, lyrically provocative, and laced with hooks. Check out the album-opening hard drive of Politik, which was penned on Sept. 13, 2001, or the gutsy A Whisper late in the set. It's strong from start to finish, one of the most musically satisfying CDs of the season from a band overflowing with talent.

Kurt Cobain
Rock Musician / Guitarist Born: 20 February 1967 Died: 5 April 1994 (suicide) Birthplace: Aberdeen, Washington Best known as: Lead singer of the group Nirvana Kurt Cobain was the lead singer and guitarist for the band Nirvana, whose melodic rock songs bridged punk with pop and sold millions of records in the early 1990s. The stripped-down, ampedup anthem "Smells Like Teen Spirit" made it to the top of the charts in 1991 and helped "grunge" rock unseat Michael Jackson-style pop. (It also helped put Seattle on the musical map -- Cobain was from the sort-of nearby logging town of Aberdeen, Washington.) The band's albums included Bleach (1989), Nevermind (1991) and In Utero (1993). Nirvana was briefly the hottest band in the world, but Cobain's discomfort with fame, personal demons and battles with drugs quickly caused problems. His status as rock legend was cemented when he committed suicide in 1994, apparently by shooting himself in the mouth with a shotgun. Extra credit: Cobain married rocker/actress Courtney Love in 1992... The couple had one daughter, Frances Bean, born in 1992... Some fans continue to believe that Cobain was murdered. Though a suicide note was found near Cobain's body, and though the coroner ruled that Cobain's wounds were self-inflicted, these fans feel the suicide was staged, and some also accuse Courtney Love of being involved. This theory has been widely publicized but has never been proved... A 1998 documentary film, Kurt and Courtney, examined their relationship and Cobain's death.

Elton John
Rock Musician / Composer Born: 25 March 1947 Birthplace: Middlesex, England Best known as: Singer of "Candle in the Wind" Name at birth: Reginald Kenneth Dwight A prolific songwriter and a flamboyant performer, Elton John had 30 different hits on the top 40 charts between 1970 and 1982. His theatrical stage appearances, with John changing into a succession of elaborate costumes and outlandish spectacles, helped make him a pop megastar. His hit tunes included "Goodbye, Yellow Brick Road," "Your Song," "Bennie and the Jets," and "Rocket Man." All were written with his longtime lyricist, Bernie Taupin. Although John lost a bit of his shine during the '80s, he re-emerged as a force in the 1990s, touring and recording and cementing his spot among the pop music aristocracy. He performed his song "Candle in the Wind" at the funeral of Princess Diana in 1997, and the song went on to become an international best-seller. John (like Paul McCartney) was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1997. Extra credit: According to a 2004 BBC profile, John "has the rare accolade of charting a Top 40 single every year from 1970 to 1996"... "Candle in the Wind" originally was written about actress

Marilyn Monroe... In 2000 John caused a flap when he performed a duet at the Grammy awards with controversial rapper Eminem... On 21 December 2005, John entered into civil partnership with his longtime companion, filmmaker David Furnish, shortly after such partnerships became legal in England.

Led Zeppelin
Rock Band Born: 1968 Died: 1980 Birthplace: England Best known as: Legendary rock performers of "Stairway to Heaven" The Led Zeppelin tune "Stairway to Heaven" is one of rock music's most famous songs, and the band itself ranks just below The Beatles and The Rolling Stones in rock 'n' roll fame. The band included singer Robert Plant, guitarist Jimmy Page, bassist John Paul Jones (b. John Baldwin on 3 January 1946) and drummer John "Bonzo" Bonham (b. 31 May 1948). Led Zeppelin was formed in 1968 and the next year released a self-titled album of heavy, blues-based rock. It went to #1 on the music charts. The immediate follow-up album, Led Zeppelin II, included the hits "Ramble On" and "Whole Lotta Love" and also went to the top of the charts. By 1971, when "Stairway to Heaven" came out on the group's mysteriously-untitled fourth album (known as "Zoso"), Led Zeppelin had become a supergroup known for churning guitars and mystical lyrics and for Plant's screaming vocals. The band toured the world throughout the 1970s, becoming in many ways the prototypical hard-partying arena-rock band. Bonham, a notorious wild man, died on 24 September 1980, choking on his own vomit after a drinking binge. The group disbanded shortly thereafter, though Page, Plant and Jones continued to perform separately and in combination. In June of 2003 Led Zeppelin was on the top of the charts again: How the West Was Won, a three-record set of live performances, was released simultaneously with a double DVD of rare concert footage, and both became top sellers within the first week. The band has reunited for performances a few times through the years, most notably at the 1985 Live Aid concert and at a 2007 London benefit for a charity in the name of Atlantic Records impresario Ahmet Ertegun. Extra credit: According to legend, Page changed the band's name from "Lead Zeppelin" to "Led Zeppelin" so that it wouldn't be mispronounced... The Song Remains the Same was the 1976 film documentary about the group... Page was known for his lyrical references to the works of Lord of the Rings author J.R.R. Tolkien and occultist Aleister Crowley... Page had been part of the British band the Yardbirds (along with Eric Clapton)... The band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995... John Paul Jones, a well-known session musician before Led Zeppelin, has since produced records for groups such as R.E.M, Heart and The BH Surfers.

Van Halen rock group In the early 1970s, in Pasadena, California, guitarist Eddie Van Halen and his brother Alex Van Halen, a drummer, formed the group Mammoth with vocalist David Lee Roth and bass player Michael Anthony. They changed their name to Van Halen, releasing their self-titled debut album in 1978. Other records include Diver Down (1982), 1984 (1984), which contained the number-one

Sammy Hagar singer Born: 10/13/1947 Birthplace: Monterey, California

Hagar joined Van Halen as lead vocalist in 1986, replacing Roth. He had previously been lead vocalist for Montrose. He left Van Halen in 1996. Justin Timberlake
Pop Musician Born: 31 January 1981 Birthplace: Memphis, Tennessee Best known as: The suave singer of "Cry Me A River" Justin Timberlake made the leap from boy band singer to Sinatra-style musical alpha male in the early 2000s. He was first among equals in the 1990s teen band *NSYNC. Timberlake sang lead on many tracks of the band's multi-platinum albums, including *NSYNC (1998), No Strings Attached (2000) and Celebrity (2001), and his charisma and good looks made him a favorite with female fans. (His popularity was helped by his on-again, off-again romance with pop songstress Britney Spears.) Timberlake went solo with the 2002 album Justified, which established him as a hunky urban leading man. Justified won Grammy Awards for best pop vocal album and best male pop vocal performance for the single "Cry Me A River." His second album, FutureSex/LoveSounds, came out in 2006 and had a stronger R&B tilt; it included the hit single "SexyBack" and established him as a fashion plate as well as a singer. That same year he costarred in two feature films, Black Snake Moan (with Christina Ricci) and Alpha Dog (with Bruce Willis and Sharon Stone). Meanwhile he remained a tabloid favorite thanks to his romances with actresses Cameron Diaz (2003-06) and Jessica Biel (starting in 2007). Timberlake launched his own label, Tennman Records, in 2008 and continued a steady stream of concert performances, TV appearances, and album guest shots. Extra credit: Timberlake and fellow *NSYNC member J.C. Chasez were regular cast members (along with Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera) on the 1990s TV revival of The Mickey Mouse Club... Timberlake found himself at the center of a public rhubarb in 2004, after he ripped off a portion of fellow singer Janet Jackson's costume, exposing her breast, during a halftime performance at the Super Bowl. He later apologized for the incident, attributing it to a "wardrobe malfunction"... Slipknot alternative rock band Chart-topping rock band Slipknot is one of the prominent examples of alternative heavy metal. Exploding on the scene with a horror-movie image complete with nuclear-reactor jumpsuits, bizarre face-masks, and referring to themselves by number (08) rather than name, they blended turntable scratching, sampling, and exotic percussion with the typical heavy metal formula of guitar, bass, and drums. Forming in Des Moines, Iowa, in 1995, they self-recorded and -released their debut CD, Mate. Kill. Feed. Repeat, which immediately drew the attention of major labels. After signing with Roadrunner Records, they recorded Slipknot in 1999, which became the first platinum record in the small label's history and reached No. 1 on Billboard's Heatseekers chart. A performance at 1999 Ozzfest cemented the band's newfound popularity. Their follow-up CD, Iowa, was released in late 2001. Sid Wilson turntables

Rihanna
Singer Born: 20 February 1988 Birthplace: Saint Michael, Barbados Best known as: Singer of the hit single "Umbrella" Name at birth: Robyn Rihanna Fenty Rihanna's tom-tom-driven single "Pon De Replay" was one of the dance hits of 2005. Rihanna was only 17, but the next year she was nominated for an MTV Video Music Award as best new artist and her career was off and running. Her first album, Music of the Sun (2005, including "Pon De Replay"), mixed reggae-tinged pop with slick R&B grooves and sold over a million copies. Her second album, A Girl Like Me, included the upbeat single "S.O.S." and was released in 2006. Rihanna also dipped her toe in the acting world in 2006, with a small part as herself in the directto-DVD cheerleader flick Bring It On: All or Nothing. In 2007 she again had big summer singles

with the slow-stepping "Umbrella" (with rapper Jay-Z) and the club-happy hymn "Don't Stop the Music," both from her album Good Girl Gone Bad. "Umbrella" in particular caught on, so much so that Rihanna put her name on a signature line of umbrellas the next year. Her 2009 album Rated R included the hit single "Russian Roulette." Extra credit: Rihanna dated R&B singer Chris Brown until February of 2009, when she called police and accused him of beating her in their car after a pre-Grammy Awards party. Brown later pleaded guilty to a charge of felony assault in exchange for a sentence of five years of probation.

Pink Floyd
Rock Band Born: 1965 Birthplace: London, England Best known as: They did Dark Side of the Moon Pink Floyd was a U.K. psychedelic rock band made up of Syd Barrett (1946-2006), guitar and vocals; David Gilmour (6 March 1944, Cambridge), guitar; Roger Waters (6 September 1944, Cambridge), vocals and bass; Nick Mason (27 January 1945, Birmingham), drums; and Richard Wright (28 July 1945, London), keyboards. Waters, Mason and Wright played together in the Architectural Abdabs before being joined in 1965 by Barrett, who changed the band name to the Pink Floyd Sound. Their sound was attributed to Barrett, who had trouble coping (some say because of LSD, some say mental illness) and was ultimately replaced by Gilmour in 1968. Their early albums were spacey and experimental and they were among the first rock groups to use light shows during their concerts. Their 1973 album Dark Side of the Moon took them from the fringes of psychedelic rock and put them on the top of the charts. The album went on to become one of the best selling records of all time, spending more than 25 years on Billboard's Top 200 chart. They had further success with Wish You Were Here (1975), Animals (1977) and The Wall (1979), but by the '80s the band drifted apart. In 1987 Gilmour, Mason and Wright reunited and recorded A Momentary Lapse of Reason. One of the top-selling rock groups in history, Pink Floyd was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996. Extra credit: The 1982 film The Wall was based on their album and starred Bob Geldof... The band name comes from two bluesmen: Pink Anderson (1900-74) and Floyd Council (1911-76)... The band's cult status was enhanced in the 1990s when the rumor spread that the album Dark Side of the Moon took on new meaning when played in synchronization with the movie The Wizard of Oz.

Their early sound was a

combination of country music and Surf Rock. Their first album, released in 1972, was a million-seller. Guitarist-vocalist Don Felder was added in 1974. Joe Walsh replaced Leadon in 1975, and Timothy B. Schmit replaced Randy Meisner in 1977. Eagles Then and Now: After recording five more albums, the band broke up in 1980, and band members pursued solo careers with varying degrees of success. The band reunited in 1994 for a tour and live album, and they have toured sporadically since. Their 2007 release, Long Road Out Of Eden was their first new studio album since 1979. Essential Eagles CD: Their Greatest Hits 1971 - 1975 In addition to being the biggest selling album of all time (28-million) this album showcases the diverse musical styles the group employed.

The doors Early History: Jim Morrison and Ray Manzarek met when they were students at UCLA's film school. Robbie Krieger and John Densmore were in a band called The Psychedelic Rangers, and knew Manzarek through their meditation classes. Together, they formed The Doors in 1965, borrowing the name from The Doors Of Perception, a novel by Aldous Huxley. The group released its first albu1965 in Los Angelesm, The Doors in 1967. Rise and Fall: Although rooted in blues and R&B, the band developed a distinctive sound that included elements of classical and flamenco music. Morrison, with his good looks, emotional vocals and often cryptic lyrics, was the object of most the attention focused on the band. Drugs and alcohol took a toll on Morrison's onstage performances and offstage behavior. His death in 1971, at age 27, remains a mystery. The official cause of death was listed as a heart attack, but no autopsy was performed. Aftermath: The band continued to perform, with little success, and finally broke up in 1972. In 2002, Kreiger and Manzarek reunited to form The Doors of the 21st Century. Densmore, who says he wasn't invited to join the new group, went to court and eventually got a ruling preventing the group from using The Doors in its name. The group now performs as Riders On The Storm. Essential CD:

The Doors The group's debut album, released in 1967, contains the song for which the group is best known, Light My Fire. It is consistently listed among the greatest rock albums of all time.

Metallica
Rock Band Born: 1981 Birthplace: California Best known as: The heavy metal band who did "Enter Sandman" Metallica dominated heavy metal music in the 1980s and 1990s, emerging as one of the top musical acts in history by the end of the century. Drummer Lars Ulrich (26 December 1963) and guitarist James Hetfield (3 August 1963) started the band in 1981. After a few line-up changes (including guitarist Dave Mustaine, who left in 1982 to form Megadeath), the band released Kill 'Em All in 1983 and toured the U.S. with Ulrich, Hetfield, guitarist Kirk Hammett (18 November 1962) and bass player Cliff Burton (10 February 1962). In 1986 the band released Master of Puppets, signalling their development from speed metal thrashers to serious songsmiths who could pound out the heavy riffs. That same year a bus accident claimed the life of Burton, and Jason Newsted (4 March 1963) joined the band. Their major-label release ...And Justice For All was a critical and popular success (they had a top 40 hit with "One"), and the band toured relentlessly. Their so-called "black" album in 1991 included the hit song "Enter Sandman," and their exposure on MTV helped make them superstars. In 1996 they released Load, followed the next year by Reload, both top-selling albums that solidified Metallica's presence in mainstream rock. In 2000 they were in the news regularly for their legal battle with the online file sharing service, Napster, and drummer Ulrich appeared before the United States Senate, explaining to a sympathetic Orrin Hatch that file sharing was, in fact, stealing. Eventually Metallica and Napster reached an agreement, but in 2001 Jason Newsted left the band and James Hetfield entered a substance abuse rehabilitation program, leaving the band's latest recording on hold.

Linkin parkXeros lack of success spurred the departure of Wakefield, setting the stage for
Chester Benningtons arrival as the bands frontman in 1999. The group changed their name to Hybrid Theory (a nod to the bands hybrid sound that combined rock and rap), but after facing legal issues with another act with a similar moniker, the group chose Lincoln Park, in honor of a neighborhood park in Santa Monica, California, that the band members would pass on their way to recording sessions. But once the band discovered that others already owned that domain name online, they slightly altered their name to Linkin Park. Instant Superstars: Linkin Park released their first album in 2000. Hybrid Theory, a reference to the groups rejected band name, was a massive success, becoming one of the biggest debuts of all time, selling approximately 10 million copies in the U.S. alone and spawning several hit singles like In the End and Crawling. In the process, the band became one of the most successful acts in the fledgling rap-rock movement. Projekt Revolution:

In 2002, Linkin Park launched Projekt Revolution, a nearly annual headlining tour that brings together different bands from the worlds of hip-hop and rock for a series of concerts. Since its inception, Projekt Revolution has included diverse acts including Cypress Hill, Korn, Snoop Dogg and Chris Cornell. Working With Jay-Z: After the release of their popular follow-up to Hybrid Theory, 2003s Meteora, the band collaborated with rap legend Jay-Z in 2004 on a record called Collision Course. The album capitalized on the trend of mash-ups, which is the construction of a new song out of the recognizable pieces of two existing songs, often from different musical genres. Collision Course, a melding of Jay-Z and Linkin Park tracks, went to the top of the Billboard album charts, proving to be one of the highest-profile mash-up projects ever. Experimenting With a New Sound: While Meteora represented a continuation of Hybrid Theorys rock-meets-rap strategy and Collision Course found the group fully embracing hip-hop textures, Linkin Parks next studio album would move away from rapping and toward atmospheric, introspective material. Though 2007s Minutes to Midnight proved to be less commercially successful than the band's previous studio records, it still sold more than 2 million copies in the U.S. and put four singles on Billboards Mainstream Rock Tracks chart. Personal Quotes I always knew I'd be in music in some sort of capacity. I didn't know if I'd be successful at it, but I knew I'd be doing something in it. Maybe get a job in a record store. Maybe even play in a band. I never got into this to be a star. I got in trouble with the police, and that was a rude awakening. That was it. I'd seen the bottom of the pit, and it was time to scrape myself out of it.
