KNOWN ISSUES *********************************************************************** *********************************************************************** 1.1 OVERVIEW *********************************************************************** This section provides specific information you should know before you install and use the HP Designjet printer software. Information and known issues are provided for the following operating systems: * Windows 2000 * Windows NT 4.0 * Windows 98, Windows 98(Second Edition), and Windows Millennium Edition (Me) * Windows XP * Windows Server 2003 Below is information which is specific to compatibility and troubleshooting. For additional information on the printer features and driver features, refer to: the help included with each software component, to the printer user guide, and to the support Web site: http://www.hp.com/go/designjet Help

Help is integrated with the HP Designjet printer software. This help can be accessed from the help buttons on dialog boxes of the various HP Designjet printer software components. Further information is available via the printer s Embedded Web Server, see your printer s documentation for instructions on how to open this. Use of non-compatible drivers Do not print to an HP Designjet 4000 series printer with drivers other than those intended for use with the HP Designjet 4000 series printer. Using any other printer drivers may cause unexpected results. Installation - general Before installing the HP Designjet printer software, close all applications and TSR (Terminate and Stay Resident) programs that load at startup in the Windows operating systems, or in DOS. Examples of such programs are Microsoft Office Manager, virus protection software, and Norton Desktop. Exit any previous version of HP Status Window that may be running. Important Note for users of IEEE-1394 in Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 The driver "hpdesignjetip1394.inf" is only for use with Windows 2000. Do not install this driver in Windows XP or Windows Server 2003. If it is accidently installed in Windows XP or 2003, you may be unable to access the printer's embedded web server using the IEEE-1394 connection. *********************************************************************** 1.2 CD BROWSER *********************************************************************** None *********************************************************************** 1.3 PRINTING SYSTEM INSTALLER *********************************************************************** Issue/Description: Two printers are installed when a second printer is installed using maintenance mode. The installer selects two drivers, (i.e. the earlier installed printer driver and the newly selected printer driver for installation) by default, when the second printer is installed. WorkAround: This can be avoided by manually selecting only one driver in maintenance mode, which will install only one printer. *********************************************************************** 1.4 PRINTER DRIVERS *********************************************************************** 1.4.1 HP Designjet 4000ps HPGL2/RTL ----------------------------------Color Space You should select the sRGB color space in your application, otherwise hue casts may not be printed correctly. No CMYK path is available in this driver. If you use CMYK, your application will convert it to RGB; ensure that it converts to sRGB.

Large Images and Adobe Applications Adobe Photoshop may have difficulty in printing large images at high resolutions or on large paper sizes. You can check in advance whether a problem will occur by clicking on the second pane from the left of the Photoshop status bar. You should see a gray rectangle representing the printed page, and a white crossed rectangle on top of it representing the image. The white rectangle should be surrounded by the gray one; if not, your image may be clipped. To overcome this problem, first ensure that you have selected the correct paper size. In Photoshop, select File, Page Setup and click on the Properties button to set the paper size. If the problem remains, select File, Page Setup, Properties again, and then click % of Normal size and set a 100% scaling factor. The printer driver will now report a lower resolution to Photoshop, which may enable your image to be printed. You may experience a similar problem with Adobe Acrobat. Choosing Standard Page Sizes in Microsoft Word If you want to select from a particular group of standard page sizes (such as ANSI or ISO) in Microsoft Word, you must first enable those paper sizes in the driver's Paper Sizes dialog box. See the driver's help file for more information. Large-File Problems If you experience some problems when printing huge drawings or long plots, please ensure that your system drive has at least 800 Mb of free space. You may also find it helpful to disable print spooling, as follows. Under Windows NT: Start -> Settings -> Printers -> Properties -> Scheduling -> "Print directly to printer" Under Windows 2000: Start -> Settings -> Printers -> Properties -> Advanced -> "Print directly to printer" Under Windows XP or Windows Server 2003: Start -> Control Panel -> Printer and faxes -> Properties -> Advanced -> "Print directly to printer" Timeout for Complex Print Jobs Complex print jobs may experience timeout problems. Under such circumstances, only a portion of the drawing will be properly printed, and the device will request more paper. To solve the problem, increase the I/O timeout setting available through the printer's front panel I/O Setup menu. For really complex drawings you may also need to change the printer spool settings. This may be done as follows. Under Windows NT:

Start -> Settings -> Printers -> Properties -> Scheduling -> "Start printing after last page is spooled" Under Windows 2000: Start -> Settings -> Printers -> Properties -> Advanced -> "Start printing after last page is spooled" Under Windows XP or Windows Server 2003: Start -> Control Panel -> Printer and faxes -> Properties -> Advanced -> "Start printing after last page is spooled" Clipping when Printing to File (Applicable only for Windows NT 4.0) If you experience clipped plots when printing to file, install Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 5 or later. Alternatively, you may also work around these problems by setting up a Local Port as a file. To do so, open Printer Properties and create a new Local Port with a valid file path as Port Name, such as "C:\output.prn". Wide Paper and AutoCAD 2000 (Applicable only for Windows 98 (Second Edition) and Windows Millennium Edition (Me)) If you want to print from AutoCAD 2000 on paper wider than 54 inches (1371.6 mm) using the HP Designjet 4000 in Best mode, you must first click Properties on the Plotter Device page, then click Custom Properties on the Device and Document Settings page, and then select the paper size. If you select a paper size wider than 54 inches to be printed in landscape mode on the Plot Setting page, your drawing will be clipped. Large Paper Sizes (Applicable only for Windows 98(Second Edition) and Windows Millennium Edition (Me)) If your application has a Page Setup or similarly named menu item, you should always take care when it is used to set a large paper size. Resizing options in the Effects properties page may be active. If so, the scaling effect could generate an error message telling you that the scaled paper size is too large for your printer and that scaling will be disabled. However, in some extreme cases this error message will be repeated several times. After the final error message your drawing will be printed according to the Page Setup settings and with the scaling setting disabled. 1.4.2 HP Designjet 4000ps PS3 ----------------------------Applicable only for Windows NT 4.0, Windows 98 (Second Edition), and Windows Millennium Edition (Me). "Unrecognized error 10035" WHILE PRINTING USING IP OR IPX PRINT PATHS If you send several print jobs to the printer at the same time using the IP or IPX print paths, the following error message may be shown on the computer: "Error writing to <printer name> for <print job name>: Unrecognized error 10035. Do you wish to retry or cancel the job?" The message occurs with Windows NT 4.0 and Windows

2000, and can also be seen if several print jobs printer at the same time from different sources. message, click "Retry" to continue with the job. using IPX and encounter this problem frequently, you print using the IP protocol instead. INDESIGN 1.0

You should select this option in the Print window. FREEHAND The driver settings are not applied to the job. You are recommended to upgrade to Freehand 8.0.1 or Freehand 9.0. With Freehand 8.0.1, you should change the driver settings in the spooler under "Document Defaults". FREEHAND WITH NON-ENGLISH PPDS Freehand has problems with non-English PPDs, it is not possible to change the PPD settings inside Freehand. Workaround: use English PPD instead. Support of driver features Some applications do not support all HP Designjet 4000ps PS3 Printer Driver features. Usually the application simply ignores the feature, but in rare cases, a printing error may occur. Application Driver Feature Acrobat 3.0x, 4.0 Mirror Image CorelDRAW! 8.0, 9.0 N-up (Applicable only for Windows NT 4.0), Scaling, Mirror Image Freehand 7.0, 8.0 N-up (Applicable only for Windows NT 4.0), Scaling, Landscape, Mirror Image PageMaker 6.5 Euro QuarkXPress 3.32, 4.0 N-up (Applicable only for Windows NT 4.0), Mirror Image, Euro WordPerfect 8.0 Scaling Workaround: Do not use these HP Designjet 4000ps PS3 Printer Driver features when printing from the above applications. Newer versions of these applications may resolve many of these incompatibilities. Layout View Problem: When you change the scaling options or the orientation options on the advance tab the layout view does not automatically update. This will not affect the final printer output. Workaround: None Euro Currency Symbol Some applications do not print the euro currency symbol correctly when it is available in some types of fonts. HP Designjet 4000ps PS3 Printer Driver does support printing the euro currency symbol when it is available in the font and can even add a euro symbol to many printer fonts that lack it, however, some applications are not able to take

advantage of this feature. Workaround: Try alternative fonts that have the euro currency symbol or use other applications with similar functionality. Application Software Compatibility Issues Adobe Acrobat 3.0x Problem: When you convert a PostScript file created by the HP Designjet 4000ps PS3 Printer Driver to PDF using Acrobat Distiller and the original document had TrueType fonts, the resulting PDF file may be missing some characters. Workaround: Upgrade to Acrobat Distiller 4.0. Problem: When you print from Acrobat Exchange, characters may be missing if you substitute TimesRoman with TimesNewRoman. Workaround: Disable Substitute With Device Font and change the setting to Download As SoftFont. Adobe Acrobat 3.0x, 4.0 (Applicable only for Windows NT 4.0) Problem: When you print multiple copies from Acrobat Exchange using the N-up option, the first page may be missing. Workaround: Do not attempt to print multiple copies while using the N-up option. Problem: Scaling doesn't work if you select Acrobat's Fit to page option. Workaround: Scaling and Fit to page are incompatible functions; to use scaling, uncheck the Fit to page option on Acrobat's Print dialog. Problem: Mirror Image doesn't work. Workaround: These options work if you select Acrobat's Print as image, however, print quality and performance may be lower. Adobe FrameMaker 5.5 Problem: EPS containing TektoMM generates a PostScript error when inserted into FrameMaker. Workaround: Do not use TektoMM in EPS that you intend to use in FrameMaker files. Adobe Illustrator 8.0 Problem: The "euro" character from a TrueType font used in a document will not print as expected. Workaround: None. Adobe PageMaker 6.5 Problem: The "euro" character from a TrueType font used in a document will not print as expected. Workaround: None. Adobe Photoshop 4.0.1, 5.0

Problem: If you select Binary as the data format selection within Photoshop, you must set a compatible Output Protocol within HP Designjet 4000ps PS3 Printer Driver. Workaround: If your printer is connected over a pure binary channel, such as AppleTalk, choose Binary for the Output Protocol option in the Device Settings tab in the printer's Properties dialog. If your printer is connected via a serial or parallel connection, choose the appropriate binary data format option for your printer: TBCP or BCP. Problem: Font CircleD, a Type 1 font supplied with CorelDRAW, may cause a PostScript printing error. Workaround: Use the TrueType version of CircleD that is supplied with CorelDRAW. CorelDRAW 8 Problem: A Postscript printing error may sometimes occur if CorelDRAW substitutes an outline (Type1) font for a TrueType font. Workaround: Install the TrueType fonts that you use in your document or specify substitution by TrueType fonts. Problem: Type 1 Symbol fonts supplied in the CorelDRAW 8 package (disk1) are substituted by other available fonts when printing. Workaround: None. Designer 7.0 Problem: The "euro" character from the font Helvetica used in a document will not print as expected. Workaround: None. Freehand 8.0 Problem: The "euro" character from the fonts Bookman and Courier used in a document will not print as expected. Workaround: None. Freehand 8.0 does not use HP Designjet 4000ps PS3 Printer Driver 5 for its printing activity. Harvard Graphics 4.0, 4.0.1, Harvard Graphics 98 Problem: Harvard Graphics fails to print to a printer instance installed for printing to Adobe Acrobat Distiller 3.0 or later. Workaround: None. Lotus Freelance Graphics 97 Problem: Bitmap images printed in transparent mode get printed as opaque. Workaround: None. Lotus WordPro 97 Problem: Imported EPS may be positioned lower than expected when printed from Lotus WordPro 97. Workaround: None.

Problem: The Number of Copies setting in WordPro dialog boxes overrides the Number of Copies option set in the driver. Workaround: Set the number of copies using the WordPro dialog boxes. Lotus 1-2-3 97 Problem: Lotus 1-2-3 97 cannot always properly calculate the text placement of inverted, rotated text. Text may be missing or incorrectly placed in a printout. Workaround: None. Microsoft Excel 97 Problem: HP Designjet 4000ps PS3 Printer Driver ignores print settings specified within Excel when the document is printed. Workaround: Specify the print settings from the Printers folder only. Microsoft Netware Client Problem: Using the Microsoft Netware Client, an attempt to install a Network printer may result in a Windows system crash if the "Browse" for printer selection is made in "Network Neighborhood." Workaround: Ask your system administrator for the full path of the network printer you want to use and type it in the Network Path dialog. Microsoft PowerPoint 97, Microsoft Publisher 97 Problem: The Copies option does not work properly when you use the N-up and Collate options (Applicable only for Windows NT 4.0). Workaround: Don't use the Copies option with the N-up and Collate options. Microsoft Word 97 Problem: If you change HP Designjet 4000ps PS3 Printer Driver settings within the Microsoft Word Page Setup dialog box and select an option that conflicts with your current configuration, the HP Designjet 4000ps PS3 Printer Driver cannot inform you of the conflict. Workaround: Change the printer settings from the Print dialog box or from the Printers folder. Problem: The Copies option does not work properly when you use the N-up and Collate options in Microsoft Word 97 (Applicable only for Windows NT 4.0). Workaround: Don't use the Copies option with the N-up and Collate options in Microsoft Word 97. Problem: Strikethrough and Double strikethrough positions on the screen may not match the printed output when the font selected for printing is a PostScript type 1 font that is available only on the printer. In this situation, Windows substitutes a TrueType font for display and supplies the driver with strikethrough and double strikethrough positions applicable to the TrueType font but not applicable to the PostScript font that was selected for printing.

Workaround: When using strikethrough or double strikethrough in the conditions described above, select a TrueType font for printing. Problem: Paper size dimensions for PostScript Custom Page Size option selected from the Printers folder do not get correctly displayed when this option is invoked within Word 97. Workaround: None. Although the Paper size dimensions selected from the Printers folder are not displayed correctly from within Word 97, they are correctly applied while printing. Workaround: Upgrade to QuarkXPress 4.0 which solves this problem or use an alternative font type such as a TrueType font. QuarkXPress 4.0 Problem: The "euro" character from a TrueType font used in a document will not print as expected. Workaround: None. QuarkXPress Passport 3.32, 4.0 Problem: EPS created from QuarkXPress Passport and imported into various applications may cause a Postscript printing error. Workaround: None. Printer Compatibility Issues Printer PostScript Level Problem: HP Designjet 4000ps PS3 Printer Driver supports PostScript Level 2 or Adobe PostScript 3 devices; it does not support PostScript Level 1 devices. Workaround: Adobe recommends that you install the standard Windows PostScript driver for PostScript Level 1 devices using Microsoft's Add Printer Wizard. Printing TrueType fonts Problem: Certain characters in some TrueType fonts may not print correctly when downloaded as outlines. When this occurs, there are

unexpected white areas within the characters. Workaround: If your printer can accept native TrueType format, download TrueType fonts in native TrueType format, otherwise download TrueType fonts as bitmaps. *********************************************************************** 1.5 INSTALL NETWORK PRINTER WIZARD *********************************************************************** *********************************************************************** 2.
