DA-90

Desuperheater for better operational economy and more efficient temperature control
High efficiency by use of full pressure drop at all flow conditions. Single nozzle a unique design that guarantees a fine water dispersion over the entire control range. Tight shut-off single seated design to prevent leakage of water into the steam pipe. Thus no upstream stop valve required. High reliability the selection of seat material and a hard nitrided control plug guarantee high operational reliability, a long operational life span and low operational and maintenance costs. Compact design and easy installation perpendicular to the steam pipe through a DN 80/3 in. flange connection or pressure seal bonnet with butt weld connection.

General
The BTG desuperheater DA-90 represents a new design for mechanical atomization of the injected spray water. The DA-90 meets the market demand for desuperheaters giving a better operational economy and more efficient temperature control. Its design is based on CCI's long experience of design and manufacture of different types of desuperheaters for severe service applications. The DA-90 provides precise and economical control of the steam temperature by injecting cooling water into the steam flow through a unique single nozzle design. The nozzle produces a spray pattern in the shape of a whirling cone of droplets. Vaporization is almost instantaneous as the water is injected into the steam flow. The single nozzle design eliminates the effect of large water drops build-up. A phenomenon that can occur when different spray patterns collide in a multi nozzle unit. The DA-90 design eliminates the need for any separate water control valve, since this function is built into the desuperheater. The DA-90 is available in six different sizes and each size in two versions depending on the pressure differential between the spray water and the steam header.

Applications
Although requirements for desuperheaters cover a wide range of applications, the great majority falls into the following standard installations: Power plant requirements for desuperheated steam supply, units having limited operating temperatures such as heating systems, heat exchangers, dump stations and evaporators. To improve heat transfer of surface type heat exchangers. Reduction and control of superheated steam where excess temperatures will harm the product. Use on boilers, either between superheater stages or at the boiler exit to control superheat temperatures at partial loads. Use as bypass on bleed or back pressure turbines to maintain balance between process steam and power requirements. Miscellaneous applications where balancing or makeup steam is required in refineries and process plants.

Function
In DA-90 the cooling water passes the seat through a specially designed nozzle head where the differential pressure between steam / cooling water is transformed into kinetic energy. The cooling water flows, at high velocity from the seat and via a slit in the plug, tangentially into a chamber where it is brought to fast rotation before being ejected into the steam as a, very finely dispersed, cone shaped spray.

The highest and lowest available pressure difference between the steam pressure and the cooling water pressure.

Then select a suitable nozzle regarding capacity and p water/steam. The pressure difference, water/steam, should not be less than 3 bar / 45 psi to ensure good atomization of the water, and it should not exceed 80 bar/1200 psi to prevent erosion of the nozzle.

If the differencial pressure is between 30-40 bar / 450-600 psi, the duration of the operation will determine what type of nozzle to select.

Cooling water temperature tw and how close it is to the saturation temperature ts.

Turndown ratio
When determining the turn down ratio there are two types to consider: Nozzle turn down The minimum water flow for proper control function is 1 / 30 of the maximum flow that the selected nozzle can give at a specific pressure drop. System turn down Calculate the turn down of the installation as follows: - Calculate the steam pipe velocity at max steam flow. - Calculate the pipe steam velocity at min steam flow. If the min steam flow shows a lower steam velocity than permitted 8 m/s / 25 fps a liner must be fitted in the pipe line, or the pipe diameter has to be decreased.

To ensure complete evaporation of the injected cooling water it is essential that the DA-90 is properly installed. The following parameters are important: Straight pipe run upstream the DA-90. Straight pipe run downstream the DA-90. Distance DA-90 temperature sensor. Install the thermowell in a protective sleeve to ensure representative temperature measurement.

Contact your CCI representative for complete information about required distances for each individual case.

Installation
The DA-90 is mounted perpendicular to the steam pipe. It is obtainable with two types of connections to the steam header. Flange connection. DN 80 mm / 3 in.PN 16 - 250 / ANSI 150 - 1500. Minimum steam header size: DN 100 mm / 4 in. Pressure seal connection. PN 160 - 400 / ANSI 900 - 2500. Minimum steam header size: DN 100 mm / 4 in. The desuperheater and the connection stud forms one unit through the pressure seal connection.

NOTE! The minimum inner diameter in the mounting stud should be 73 mm/2.9 inch, which corresponds to piping schedule XS (80). A complete evaporation of the injected cooling water is required to protect the piping and process equipment downstream of the desuperheater. The evaporation distance must be as short as possible with exact temperature control at varying loads and degree of overheating of the steam. Our experience shows that the evaporation distance, is controlled by different parameters, such as: Atomization of the water Steam flow path Steam velocity and steam pressure Differential temperature t2 - ts, i.e. the difference in temperature between the desuperheated steam and the saturation temperature of the steam.

Liner
A liner can be used in the steam header to improve the system turn down, i.e. to increase the steam velocity at the point of water injection. Contact your CCI representative for detailed information regarding diameter, length and design of the liner, as well as information about its impact on the installation dimensions presented in this data sheet. NOTE! The desuperheater is although the most important only one component in a whole series required in order to obtain a good control of the steam temperature. A single faulty item with regard to measurement, control or installation will jeopardise the functional operation.
